The Earth Comes to Life: Celebrate The Vernal Equinox

Can you feel it? There’s a change in the air. Depending on where you live, that change could be subtle, a slow trickle of melting snow down a still-frozen mountain road, or it could be drastic, as it has been in Philadelphia these past two weeks, where we finally experienced the snowstorm we’d been waiting for and then happily watched it all melt away under a blissfully warm sun just a day later. Yes, a new season is afoot. The smell of slowly melting earth, the return of birdsong outside my bedroom window… the beaming, happy faces of friends and strangers rejoicing under a blue sky, these are the reminders of why I love living on the east coast. Sure, there are days when I dream of an ever-shining California sun, of never having to worry if I’m wearing the right boots or not, but in my core I know. I know I’m made to live in a place of constant change, an ever-shifting earth beneath my feet.

Today we celebrate yet another shift in our planet: the first day of spring, or the vernal equinox. This is a season of rebirth, a time to shed our winter layers and emerge anew. Throw open the windows, allow the air — that damp and dewy spring green air — to wash through your space. Fill every vase with flowers and dust off the debris of a long, dark season. Clear the cobwebs from your mind, and enter spring with open arms.
