On Film: The National Cherry Blossom Festival in DC

This post was contributed by some of our lovely DC FP girls!

There are few sights more beautiful than the hundreds of cherry blossoms bursting with life during DC’s annual festival. What started as a gift and show of friendship in 1912 has evolved into a time of gathering and celebration for so many. And with the present time comes present technology – the age of the iphone and the selfie stick. In the whirlwind of this present distraction, we chose to take a step back. With a Mamiya film camera and close friends in tow, we were able to experience the festival through fresh eyes.

The beauty of shooting with film is that there is no instant gratification – no immediate results, no previews to ponder, no selfies to stage. So instead of analyzing and criticizing, we were left free to soak in the splendor that surrounded us, the beauty of the blossoms, and the diverse and intricate beauty of the women stepping in front of the lens. Though the events surrounding the cherry blossoms will change with time, we can always rest knowing that the timeless practices of friendship and gathering will not be lost with us.
