How To: Bridal Flower Crowns With Sophie and Luna

This post comes from our UK PR Manager Lisa! Follow along with her on Instagram @freepeopleuk

Big, small, floral or leafy…there is something about the whimsical charm of a flower crown that finishes off an outfit beautifully.

A few months ago at The Most Curious Wedding Fair in London we met Sandra, owner and designer of Sophie and Luna. Sophie and Luna specializes in flower crowns using only real flowers which Sandra dries, so rather than them wilting after a day, these pretty crowns last a lifetime! We loved her designs so much that we asked her to come in and give us a tutorial. Although she couldn’t give away her secrets on how to dry the flowers, here you can learn how to make fresh crowns on the morning of your wedding, you could even get your bridesmaids involved for a fun craft brunch!

After we had finished making our crowns we headed off to the beautiful rose gardens in London’s Regents Park to photograph Sandra in some dreamy FP dresses. Read on for the step and then scroll through to learn more about Sandra!

Materials:

Florist tape

Aluminum wire

Scissors

Florist wire on different gauges

Dried flowers

Step 1

How To:

Step 1. Cut a piece of aluminum wire to the size of your head

Step 2. With the florist tape, join both ends, making a circle.

Step 3. Wrap the aluminum base with tape so you don’t see the silver colour of the aluminum wire.

Step 2

Step 4. Place the first dried flowers and secure them with the florist wire. You can add any flowers to the base. I personally like greenery and some pinks or whites.

Step 3

Step 4

Step 5: Now place the bigger flowers and keep using the florist wire to wrap them to the base and secure them. Add as many flowers as you like!

Hey Sandra, thanks for sharing your tips with us! When did you decide you wanted to work with flowers?

I always loved flowers but everything happened accidentally. I was preparing my wedding last year and I knew from the beginning that I wanted flowers in my hair and my bridesmaid’s hair for my bohemian-relaxed wedding. The problem was that I had 9 bridesmaids, and I did not want to spend money on real flower crowns that would wilt after a few hours. So I decided to make them myself! I got married in Marbella, south of Spain, so the flowers had to be dried to be able to be shipped before the wedding.

Was there a defining moment when you realized you wanted to turn your passion into your full time career?

I realized I was not the only one with the same problem and that no one in the UK was doing dried flower crowns like mine, with vibrant colours and looking like they were fresh. It was about seeing a demand in the UK market and a great business opportunity.

What have you learned since starting your business, Sophie and Luna?

I have learned that doing what you love means never really working and that being your own boss is the most wonderful thing that you can experience everyday. I could never imagine that I would work day and night, weekdays and weekends without a day off and still be happy!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to take the leap?

Running your own business is very hard, so choose something that you really love, that you feel passionate about it and it will be much easier to work hard every day.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

When the BBC approached me at The Most Curious Wedding Fair in March to pick one of my headpieces for their Hair Show that will be live this summer. Sophie and Luna on TV, I could not believe it!

What was the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Do what you love and you are passionate about, you will be rewarded.

Tell us about where you grew up?

I come from Malaga, Spain, which is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is a very touristic city in the south of Spain where the good weather is the main attraction to its visitors. The beach is nice but what really makes Malaga unique is its people and their traditions. Locals are welcoming, fun and happy. Downtown is delightfully pedestrianized with lots of shops, terraces and cafes.

What made you make the move from Spain to London?

I always wanted to come to London. Since I was a little girl I liked speaking different languages. I used to make friends from the UK during my holidays when I was young. Late in 2009 I came to spend some time in London and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to study marketing and build my career here.

What’s a typical day like for you?

On a typical day, I get up around 7.30am, get ready and leave home to come to the studio. If I have to go to the flower market I wake up at crazy hours! I first check emails and plan the day. The best days are when I have to make orders. I love creating. Other days I just work on social media, marketing, planning and paper work.

What do you do to relax?

To relax I have to travel, otherwise I never stop working. If not, a hot bath and a glass or Ribera del Duero listening to some music is the easiest way to end a busy day in a good way.

What three things in life could you not live without?

Traveling, music and my good friends.

What does being free mean to you?

Being free for me is believing in myself, living everyday like it is my last day and not caring about what others think. Loving others, and of course myself, is essential in my life.
