Zella Day: Album Release Party & Interview!

Musical beauty. Artistic spirit. Poetic songbird. It’s no question Zella Day is all of the above.

At the young age of twenty, she possesses the confidence and grace of those twice her age. Her demeanor is gentle and inviting, yet she exudes the strength and soul of a woman who has lived a life of experience and story.

I’ve been lucky enough to see her perform live on both coasts now, once last year in New York and now most recently at the infamous Troubadour in Los Angeles. Our dear friend released her new album Kicker on Tuesday and celebrated the new record with a sold out show the following night.

The venue was packed from wall to wall, front to back, and all the way upstairs with people trying to get a glimpse of the singing stunner. Zella brought us on a musical ride Wednesday night; she commanded the stage – dancing from one side to the other –  shaking her tambourine, rockin’ with her bandmates, and interacting with the crowd. She sang hits such as “Sweet Ophelia” and “Hypnotic,” and the crowd was eager to passionately sing along. The energy… electric. At one point, she took it down a notch to mesmerize the crowd with a stripped-down version of “Jameson.” Mouths dropped… all eyes were fixated on Zella.

We caught up with Zella to chat about her new album, staying grounded, and living in the “gypsy chapter” of her life.

You are from a small mountain town in Arizona — how has that shaped the artist you are today?

I was kept hidden away in a magical place. I was free to be whomever I wanted to be, which lead me to play music. I’ve always taken myself very seriously and Pinetop was a place that never told me no.

How would you describe the process of creating Kicker?

KICKER is my transformation from Arizona to California embodying both worlds. Honoring the place that I come from and the city I now call home. All the lyrics poured out of me because I was going through so much change.

Do you have any favorite songs on the album?

I’m a sucker for “Jameson”. That song gives people a taste of who I am all alone without any production.

How do you stay grounded in such a hectic industry?

Family. I’ve got some of the most beautiful people in my life that are a constant reminder of what is truly important. The industry doesn’t have to be so hectic if you don’t give it all of yourself.

What’s been your favorite experience on the road thus far?

I’ve surrendered to the unpredictably of the experience. It’s never the same, always different. I stay focused on my message which is absolute. This is the gypsy chapter in my life.

Everyone I know has heard and loves your album — is there anything else you want us to know about Kicker?

Come to a show and share it with me live because that’s what I’m looking forward to most. I want people to feel empowered to be themselves after they listen to the record because that’s exactly what I’m doing with my music.
