The Really Cool Thing About Life: Musings on the Paths We Take

How has your life changed in a year? Our paths often diverge, ebb, and flow in the most unexpected of ways…

If you were to ask me what I would be doing in 10 years, I would reply with an answer that would essentially be a summary of my most recent long term goals. The thing about that though, is my life goals tend to change (I blame it on my optimism). I’m greatly influenced by my surroundings, and certain encounters can steer my vision for the future in a completely different direction than it was, say, two days ago. Sometimes I feel as though I should be more set in my ways, but my strong belief in everything always working out puts that to rest.

In a blink, life happens. Stop and just think for a second. Where are you? Who are you with? What are you doing? If you were to time hop back five years, is this what you pictured your life looking like? Somehow you landed yourself here, right to this very moment. Was everything according to plan?

The same questions made their way into my thoughts as I was driving to work the other day. 65 mph down the same road for 15 minutes, this is my mind’s time to think. It came out of nowhere, too, the way a voice interferes with a daydream. A display of my current life came into focus and I was front row center taking notes. Although, I could only write three words down on the paper…

Life just happens.

I got to look at my life from different angles, and realized that most of what is currently happening wasn’t necessarily in the plan. and to be honest? I’m completely okay with it.

Sometimes without prediction, you’ll find yourself in a place of complete happiness. Bad times turn good when you least expect it. All of the puzzle pieces will fit, and you’re left with a beautiful picture that you might not remember putting together. Before you even know it, you’re in it… living it. An explanation most of the time isn’t necessary, and you might not ever find one.

In my opinion, that’s the thing about life that makes it so special. It just happens.

It’s important to have moments where you’re able to reflect. Whether it be a car ride, or when you lay your head down at night, a few minutes to check back in with yourself and ask those questions is all it takes to open up the eyes and make them see the good that’s present, or realize it’s time for change.

I’m not where I planned to be. Parts of it are very good, and parts of it don’t make me happy at all, but I am slowly, ever so slowly, learning acceptance. Sometimes you just gotta make the best with what you got! Be ok with it, just like you said. :)

I really love this post. I really love planning and I have multiple goals. But very often I find myself thinking how much has happened in a year and how I could have never imagined last year where I am now. And actually I like it. Life happens and I can never know what will happen. And that’s actually very good thing.

This really resonated with me and came at the perfect time in my life. This summer I had every intention of completing a study abroad program in Ireland. Until I got there and every fiber of my being told me I wasn’t meant to be there. After heartache and struggle and probably almost 72 hours straight of tears and anxiety, I decided to come home. But then….everything fell into place. It was probably coincidence but I feel like it was fate that I stumbled upon a job at my university that was absolutely meant for me, and was hired. Almost overnight, the clouds parted and bad times turned to good. As you said…life just happens. It’s important to remember that life happens, and it keeps happening, and it’s happening to bring us someplace wonderful.

I love this post, it really hits home in my life right now. “Life just happens” is such a wonderful reminder to accept life as it comes to you and realize that its okayyyy if things don’t go as planned, thanks for the inspiration Jana!

Well…I decided to reflect just now, since I was given the kind reminder. What I’m doing now is definitely not what I really just expected to do. I had plans…but, I went with the flow I wanted to in the moment. Sure, maybe I should stick to the plan. Though, perhaps I can give myself more time.

In the shower or while I am playing a game on my phone. My mind wonders and whatever I start to think about, I realize those are the things that are eating at me and I just ignore as much as possible. Like issues with relationships or fear about work, those kinds of thoughts.

Unfortunately, rather than deal with them I usually take faster showers or give up on the games.
