Newport Folk Fest: Music + Memories

We spent two days on the coast of Rhode Island experiencing everything Newport had to offer. Here is the result:

When I heard Natalie and I were headed to Newport, RI for Folk Fest, I was a little numb to the fact that an amazing experience was upon us. The festivals we normally attend have a line-up full of my favorite artists, so I always know that I’ll have a good time. My expectations for this trip were a little different, simply because folk music isn’t generally what I listen to. It’s not to say I don’t like it, it’s just a realm I rarely dip my toes into. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but that was the best part.

New fest, new town, new music. From the minute Nat and I touched down, we were all about it. We couldn’t wait to explore Newport, everything I’d heard about this town was nothing short of amazing. The harbor, the houses, the terrain… where to start? 40 Steps. We spent about two hours cliff hopping and taking photos before heading to the next coastal landmark on our list — shoutout to all of you guys and Free People Providence for the great suggestions! “How does this place exist?” We kept repeating that line throughout our entire visit. Yeah, Newport is beautiful. Like, next level beautiful.

Something to note, having a rental car is a necessity if you’re going to be exploring a new city that doesn’t have convenient public transportation. It kind of makes you feel like a local too, and you’re able to go wherever you want, whenever you want. Some of our best memories were driving with the windows down along Ocean Drive, mesmerized by the stature of some of the houses. Or should I say estates? Manors? This town quickly made me feel like I was in the Great Gatsby.

In two days, we managed to cover ground all over Newport, hang out with Free People Providence and score some incredible cliff pics of their gorgeous store gals (stay tuned!), and have a full day at Folk Fest. Calexico, Iron & Wine, and even a  special guest appearance by My Morning Jacket made our Friday at Newport Folk Fest memorable. Here’s a look at our trip to Newport!
