Photo Diary: The Super Bloom in Death Valley

A road trip to Death Valley brought us life in millions of bright wildflowers.

Super Bloom. You may have heard of it — a beautiful and rare occurrence that takes over miles of desert hillsides, basins and roads every decade or so. Death Valley, one of the hottest places in the world, hosts this stunning phenomenon for about two weeks in early spring. Tourists from all over the world flock to the middle of nowhere to photograph and frolic in the waist-high sea of desert gold.

The beauty of this year’s Super Bloom is in the amount of flowers blooming. Every year, a fair amount of wildflowers grow before Death Valley becomes the scorching land it’s named for. However, due to an increase in rain last year — from the average one to two inches per year to three inches — wildflower seeds that laid dormant for years became alive in beautiful color. No one knows how long some species of wildflowers had been waiting for significant rain, but rangers say that some of the blooms this year had not been seen since 2005.

Super Bloom will last only a few more weeks until the temperatures start to rise. So, if you want to experience the magic, head out there soon. Who knows how long until the next one!
