Wellness Encyclopedia: Get Hip To Rosehip Seed Oil + A 3-Ingredient DIY Face Mask

Learn why you should be putting this miracle oil on your face…

Take a peek inside my medicine cabinet and one thing will be abundantly clear: I really love my oils. Jojoba, apricot kernel, coconut, and shea butter… little vials line the shelves, nestled up next to big jars and bottles. I love how luxurious they feel, the moisturizing qualities of oil far exceed traditional lotion, and you can’t beat a one-ingredient wonder like coconut oil, but… I think I’ve finally found my favorite. I’ve used a variety of different oils on my face over the years, always searching for the perfect one and always falling short. Some felt too heavy, some invited breakouts. Until I picked up a bottle of 100% organic rosehip seed oil.

Rosehip seed oil, to put it simply, is nature’s anti-aging miracle. A beautifully uncomplicated solution for those looking for an all-natural and organic, nature-made serum. Extracted from the seeds (I.E. rosehips) of wild rose bushes, this amber-hued oil is filled to the brim with skin-loving essential fatty acids, beta-carotene, tocopherols, and lycopene. When pressed into skin, it behaves more like a serum, sinking in quickly and leaving behind nothing but a soft glow — no oily residue. Particularly beneficial for dry or mature skin, rosehip seed oil evens skin tone, heals sun damage, and smooths wrinkles. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. After a few weeks of use, I’ve noticed my skin is smoother, younger-looking, and well, a whole lot happier! When choosing a rosehip seed oil, it’s important to read labels and check ingredients, as you’ll find many options labeled ‘rosehip seed oil’ that actually contain mostly vitamin E (my favorite is pictured here, from Trilogy). To reap all the benefits, choose a 100% organic, 100% pure oil, and remember: a little goes a long way. Read on to get the low-down on rosehip seed oil, then scroll to the bottom for a simple and effective 3-ingredient face mask recipe.

What is it? Rosehip seed oil is the product of cold-pressing the seeds of wild rose bushes (AKA rosehips), usually from the Rosa moschata or Rosa rubiginosa species, which have origins in the Andes, or the more common Rosa canina.

What are the benefits? Valued primarily for it’s deeply hydrating properties, rosehip seed oil is nature’s one-ingredient anti-aging serum, thanks to high concentrations of essential fatty acids, such as linoleic (an omega-6) and linolenic (an omega-3). Known as a “dry” oil, which means it sinks into skin easily and leaves no oily residue behind, rosehip seed oil is great for almost all skin types, especially dry or mature skin (though those with oily or acne-prone skin may want to steer clear). Rosehip seed oil has also been shown to effectively lighten the appearance of scars and stretch marks if treated early on, and can provide relief to skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

How to I use it? Because it’s derived straight from the plant, 100% pure, 100% organic rosehip seed oil should always be chosen. Pure rosehip seed oil is safe to apply directly to skin and makes an incredible one-ingredient facial serum, simply use 2-3 drops and press into face and neck, following up with a cream moisturizer, if desired. It can also be worked into dry hair as a leave-in conditioner, used to treat sunburns and skin conditions, or mixed into at-home beauty treatments for extra hydration. To treat scars or stretch marks, apply rosehip seed oil early and frequently to encourage healing.

The face mask below provides plenty of hydration, thanks to rosehip seed oil and raw honey, while the lactic acid in the yogurt helps to dissolve dead skin cells. Use it once or twice a week for gorgeous, glowing skin.

In a small dish, mix all ingredients together. Smooth mixture onto clean face and let sit for 10-20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Warm 2-3 drops rosehip seed oil between palms and press into face and neck.
