Why You Should Be Taking One Photo Every Day

Imagine taking at least one photo, everyday, for 365 days. What would you capture?  Why would you do it?

Whether you are a professional photographer, dog walker, librarian, or even just figuring life out as it comes, you have an eye. You see life differently than others. You walk the streets to your very own beat, see the sunrises from where you stand, and cook your pancakes a special way than anyone else. You should capture it all.

On Mother’s Day this year, I spent the day sorting through old Polaroids that my mama and her family had taken over the years. It was pretty magical, to see the world from their perspective. Because of my job description, and my obsessive need to capture life on a daily basis, I’m off to a good start. You will always find me snapping anything and everything, from the most insignificant moment of the day to the most important. I think you should start, too.

What you need:

Any kind of camera. I’m talkin’ iPhone, film, DSLR — whatever you have is picture perfect.

So, you have your camera. Start shooting. Find a second out of your “OMG, BUT I’M THE BUSIEST HUMAN ALIVE AND SO SLEEPY” day and snap a picture. It could be of the buttery English muffin you ate for breakfast, or the trumpet player on the corner of your block. Just take it.  Because you are only promised that day, that moment. You wouldn’t want to forget about it, would you?

Taking a picture every day has helped me keep a visual diary of each and every day. It’s forced me to be creative, to find the beautiful little things in life, and hey, it’s helped my Instagram look kinda cute, too. In the beginning, it may be something you have to remind yourself to do, but eventually it will just become as simple as breathing. You’ll start really opening your eyes and seeing things differently. When it’s all said and done, you will have a bunch of images that represent your days, in a way. When I look through mine, which at this point there are thousands and thousands, I really see my life like a work of art, full of little magical moments I decided to hang on to.

Why do you think it’s important to take a picture every day? Have you done it? How did you stay inspired?

A few weeks ago I started doing the 365 project for a third time, but with analogue camera and I’m so in love with every step of this new adventure! These kinds of project are the best ones, they challenge your creativity and make you learn how to appreciate every day :)

I’m not a pro photographer, but I love capturing almost any random thing any chance I get, I love looking back on my blog and memories and getting inspired!

I am in the middle of my picture a day challenge for the calendar year of 2016. I started in January. I am not sure why I decided to do it but I started. I have an alarm set on my phone to remind me. It is a fun challenge. Some days I have so many photos that I’ve taken that’s it hard to choose which one to post (I use VSCO to keep track of each day) and other days I have to get out of bed and take a random picture of something in my house just to get it done before the clock strikes midnight. But overall it is/has been a good experience. I can flip back through my pictures and recall exactly what day that was and what I did that day based on the picture I post. I am eager to look back at the end of the year and see all my photos. I am considering making a flip book on Blurb to have a keepsake of my photo challenge.

For the past few months I’ve been itching to do something creative and challenging. It’s safe to say that I’m not much of a photographer but will be starting this today with two other friends. We are all going to use our iPhones for the challenge.. at the end of the year it’ll be fun to see what everyone took.. plus maybe we could form a of photo scrapbook out of it for a tabletop item each of us can keep.

Wow that is a very cool idea! I recently purchased some photo editing software and I’m going to test features out by taking daily inspirational photos!

I love this idea! I used to take a picture of my daughter every day from the day she was born (500daysofSofia). I would forget or not get a chance occasionally (I actually need to reorganize it) but I really loved doing it and actually wish I continued (but the name wouldn’t allow it ha). I’m a personal style blogger and think this challenge would keep me motivated.
