Get Ready for the Sun!

A Natural Beauty DIY With Indie Lee!

Can you feel it? Summer is slowly casting its glowing warmth over the planet, and will soon take over with days full of sunshine and fun. But that sunshine can come at a cost when we forget to protect our skin from its harmful rays. We’ve learned that sunscreen is the secret ingredient to long worry free days spent outdoors but now, we’re starting to learn that maybe sunscreen isn’t all that good for you. It seeps through your skin and can flood the bloodstream with hard-to-pronounce chemicals. And so we find ourselves between a rock and a hard place. It seems there is no easy way out.

To get some guidance, we invited beauty founder Indie Lee to teach us about natural sun care on our FP Escape to Yelapa Mexico. What is her advice for this complicated situation? How can we best protect ourselves from the chemicals in sunscreen and the UV radiation of the sun at the same time? As someone who has dedicated the last few years of her life to transforming the beauty industry and promoting natural skincare, we knew she would have some excellent advice to share.

Beachfront at Xinalani eco-resort, we gathered around and listened to what Indie had to say. Here are her top tips for protecting yourself in the sun:

Wear the sunscreen: Do it, put it on. When we know we’re going to be spending a lot of time outside, first and foremost, we want to protect ourselves from burning. Just be sure that you wash it off at the end of the day to prevent it from fully absorbing into the skin. First, use Indie’s oil cleanser below to remove the sunscreen, and then immerse yourself in a bath with her DIY bath soak recipe to fully remove the residue.

Add a hat: The more protection, the better. Always wear a hat to protect your face, and if you can bear it, a light layer to protect your arms and legs is always great as well.

Find a shady spot: Umbrellas, trees, tiki huts – post yourself up under whatever you can find. It’s a great way to enjoy being outside without having to worry about the side effects of the sun’s rays.

Indie then led us through a step-by-step for creating our own bath soak and oil cleanser to fully remove sunscreen from our skin after a day in the sun. Here is how to create the DIY after-sun-care recipes for yourself!

That oil cleanser sounds wonderful. I’ll have to make it soon. Prepping for summer scares me sometimes. I always forget to put on sunscreen and I know it is so bad for me!

I can’t wait to make these. The cleansing oil sounds amazing. Also, I’ve never heard of blue tansy or borage essential oils. I’ll have to search them out and smell them, haha.
