Natural Remedies – 6 Tips for Keeping Hormones in Check

Better your health and balance with these simple and powerful suggestions…

As you strive toward bettering your internal and external health, there is one factor to consider almost more than the others — your hormones.

Like many women I have befriended and worked with, I, too, have struggled with symptoms of imbalance, namely breakouts… around the time when my period was about to begin. This was truly the impetus that compelled me to eat cleanly and educate myself about nutrition. In doing so, I quickly discovered that changing my eating habits benefitted my skin, and that hormones are responsible for many other health issues — energy levels, reproductive health, skin health and mood, to name a few.

Your body is comprised of 50 different hormones, all produced in the endocrine system (the endocrine system includes thyroid, the adrenals and female ovaries). So it’s no wonder that balancing them can be tricky. So it’s overly important to pay attention to your body and what it’s trying to tell you. Set yourself up for health and balance with these simple and powerful tips:

Increase your intake of detoxifying foods. Detoxifying foods include leafy greens, kale, spinach, bok choy, beet greens and collards. I aim to include two large fistfuls per day. You can add them to a smoothie, a juice, salad, or steam or sauté them.

Take an evening primrose supplement. Loaded with essential fatty acids (EFAs), the omega 3 and omega 6 present here can help regulate and even out your hormones. Studies have shown that taking evening primrose can also reduce PMS and pain related to your period. Fatty acids also aid in improving skin elasticity, making this an overall must for inner and outer beauty.

Drink a Moon Juice Sex Dust elixir. This blend is loaded with adaptogens that not only boost libido but regulate hormones when taken on a regular basis. Great for both men and women, the ingredient maca has shown to reduce signs of PMS, boost mood and level out your energy. I like to mix Sex Dust with my favorite rose-infused tea for an afternoon pick-me-up.

Eliminate sugar and processed foods. Removing these from your diet is essential to achieving balance and steering clear of any health complications down the line. If you look closely, you’ll notice that sugar is in nearly every packaged good, and serves as one of the main culprits of causing inflammation. Make sure to always read your food labels.

For pesky breakouts, consider scaling back your skin care routine. We are so eager to pick at and scrub our skin, apply serums and lotions and soaps in the name of clearer skin, when these can further irritate the skin and lengthen its recovery time. Just as you would revert to “bland” foods for an upset stomach, you should limit your skin routine to a mild or gentle cleanser and 1-2 topical treatments. I love to use an aloe-based lotion or serum and a spot treatment to treat the issue directly. And, if any scarring occurs, a few dabs of coconut oil does the trick to get rid of the evidence.

And lastly, go green. Consider every product in your daily regimen — those you use on your skin, as well as those for the home. Toxic chemicals in traditionally marketed goods are now proven to disrupt the endocrine system and affect other women’s health issues.
