FP Awakenings: Awaken with Beauty

This week, consider the power of the products in your morning beauty routine to shape your day from its start…

This is the last installment in a 4-part series about awakening with beauty by Jolene Hart, health coach and author of the Eat Pretty book series.

The choices you make as you start each day are some of the most impactful to your beauty and health. Your morning routine—including thoughts, nutrition, movement, and self-care—sets the tone for your entire day.

This week, consider the power of the products in your morning beauty routine to shape your day from its start. Your morning routine affects your mindset and self-confidence throughout the day, as well as long-term inner health, since the ingredients in our beauty products quickly find their way into our bodies.

I feel that some of the most important ingredients to avoid in personal care products are those with hormone-disrupting effects in the body, such as paraben preservatives, phthalates found in synthetic fragrances, and the chemical sunscreen oxybenzone. Swapping conventional products for natural and organic alternatives can quickly make a big difference in the day-to-day presence of certain chemicals in your body, evidenced by a 2016 study done in California.

I advise my clients and readers to consider the big picture, re: their beauty routines, when first considering swapping conventional products for natural and organic alternatives. Think about the products that you use with the most frequency (don’t forget something like toothpaste, which you use two or more times a day), over the greatest surface area of your body (hello, body lotion and oil), and in areas that are sensitive (underarms, for example). Don’t forget products that you literally ingest—lipsticks, glosses and balms.

Here are the top six product categories I would start with, along with a few of my top natural and organic product picks at Free People:

Face: Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil

Body: Pangea Organics Body Oil

Lips: Juice Beauty Lip Moisturizer; Vapour Siren Lipstick

Deodorant: Schmidt’s Deodorant Stick

Sun Protection: Suntegrity 5-in-1 Tinted Face Sunscreen

Toothpaste: David’s Premium Natural Toothpaste
