LA Holiday with Rainey Qualley

Find a warmer side of fall with singer/actress Rainey Qualley

Fall in LA is a little different than what we Easterners are used to. Try 70 degrees and sunny, (light) sweater weather at its finest. If your travels take you west this season, it’s a good idea to take some style advice from a local before you begin that journey. Singer/actress Rainey Qualley shows us how to do fall the west coast way. Keep reading and get to know more about this babe on the rise…

Where did you grow up, and how did you make your way to LA?

I was born in New York, lived in Montana when I was young, then North Carolina, New York again, New Orleans for a minute, LA, Nashville, and now — finally — back to LA where I plan to stay for a while!

How did music and acting find their way into your life?

I started dancing when I was 2 years old. For me, dance is the physical embodiment of sound. Plus, it exposed me to basically every genre, and made me comfortable both on stage and in my body. My parents put me in piano when I was a kid, and my dad taught me to play guitar as a teenager. And I always performed in school plays and choirs. So,basically, I always knew I wanted to make music and act. It just took me awhile to figure out how to make that a reality.

Are there any exciting projects you have in the works?

I’ve released two songs so far (under the artist name Rainsford, my full first name), which I am incredibly excited about. And I have an EP in the works. Plus, I was just cast in a weird/cool indie film called Puberty that I’m stoked to start.

How would you describe your personal style?

Lazy and experimental (which I know sounds contradictory). Lazy, because I tend to fall in love with a few things and wear them in heavy rotation for months at a time. And experimental, because I also like to wear weird things because I think dressing up is fun. For example, I recently purchased a few vintage ice skating costumes online (one of which I wore to dinner with my dad while he was in town).

What’s a typical day in the life of Rainey look like?

My days are very inconsistent. Sometimes they are jam-packed with writing sessions, recording, auditions, photo shoots and travel. And then I’ll have 3 days in a row to just chill with my cats and work out.

Three go-tos in LA?

The Sweat Spot is my favorite dance studio. It’s so fun. I love Griffith Park/the Observatory… beautiful hikes/space observation to blow your mind. Liberate Emporium in Los Feliz is a really cool metaphysical shop. Plus, they offer amazing tarot card readings and holistic healing (both of which I’ve experienced — and they were truly altering).

Holiday travel plans?

My family spends most Christmases in Montana. It’s a magical place to spend the holidays — there’s so much snow and solitude.

She’s not an LA native though. She was born in New York. Please connect with born LA natives for style lead-ins for those not on the west coast (I’m lucky enough to live in San Diego). xox
