Why You Need: Waterless Bar From Root Science

The perfect marriage of skin care that’s both gentle and highly effective…

If you’ve been anywhere near Instagram over the last couple of years, it’s clear that Iceland is the place to visit these days. Not only is it insanely photogenic (helloooo, rolling hills, adorable livestock and Northern Lights), but the country also ranks as one of the happiest in the world.

That’s right: Earlier this year, the World Happiness Index (yes, that’s a real thing) ranked Iceland as the third happiest nation on the planet.

While I’m sure this is due to a combination of legitimate factors (quality of life, money, society, etc.), my beauty brain is inclined to believe that a major one is the abundance of native, natural resources they use for self-care. I know, I know. How could beauty products have an impact on total happiness when there are so many other things in play? And while I’m sort of kidding here, it doesn’t hurt to think about the connection between Iceland’s natural resources and the country’s overall well-being. I mean, have you seen pictures of those geothermal spas?!

After all, the right products are a crucial part of self-care, which is a crucial part of health and wellness, which are both crucial parts of happiness.

If you’re anything like me and desperately want to visit the Nordic wonderland that is Iceland, but have zero plans to actually visit, the next best thing—in my opinion—is to get your hands on products that can transport you there. So once you’ve stocked up on hákarl (fermented shark), skyr (yogurt) and rúgbrauð (rye bread), think about skincare. And no one is doing Icelandic self-care better than Root Science.

Quick backstory: Gigja Hlín Wesneski, the found of Root Science, was born and spent her early years in Iceland. At 8, she moved to the US and spent years dealing with an array of equally-terrible skin ailments (acne, rosacea, scarring). When she was old enough to take control of her skin destiny, she decided to look back to the clean, pure, minimalist roots of her home country and thus Root Science was born.

With a focus on Iceland’s history with medicinal and local plants to treat ailments of all kinds, Root Science stays true to their roots (pun intended). The harsh climate of Iceland means the plants that do survive are strong, built to thrive under any circumstance. So the fact that every single one of Root Science’s formulations contains a thoughtfully crafted combination of these powerful ingredients makes for some super-effective, super-clean products.

One that really stands out as supremely Icelandic (you know, minimal, clean, natural, photogenic) is their gentle cleansing bar aka CLEANSE. Don’t let the fact that it’s a bar cleanser fool you—this stuff is legit.

Used to wake your skin up in the morning, to remove daily dirt and makeup, or even as a body bar in a pinch, the bar is crafted from a blend of coconut, olive and palm oils, shea butter, and calendula and rosemary extract. It lathers like a dream, cleans deep into your pores without stripping your skin, and leaves your face calm, moisturized and as happy as if you’d just dipped into the famed Blue Lagoon.

The shea butter delivers fatty acids as it repairs your skin, hydrates and kicks collagen production into stimulation mode. The coconut oil and rosemary serve as antimicrobial, antiseptic warriors, fending off bacteria that can cause eczema, dermatitis and acne. And then the calendula swoops in to soothe redness and inflammation.

CLEANSE is truly the perfect marriage of skin care that’s simultaneously gentle and highly effective, a combination that’s often hard to find. And just in case you need one more selling point, the bar contains absolutely no water, which means a way longer shelf life.

+ Healthy skin? Check. Glowing skin? Check. Clean skin? Check. Ticket to Iceland? We’re working on it.
