DIY Charm Bracelets & Gift Toppers

December 21st, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

I have a special two-part DIY for you today! I started out wanting to make little charm bracelets inspired by one I saw on the wrist of a co-worker:

DIY Charm Bracelets & Gift Toppers

And then, I thought that these would make great little add-ons to holiday gifts! Say you’re going to a holiday party and bringing a bottle of wine or champagne for your friend – tie a little personalized charm bracelet around the neck to make it more special! And that got me thinking about gift toppers

I’m one of those people who is terminally gift-wrap-challenged. No matter how hard I try, you can always tell which gifts are from me because the wrapping paper is wrinkled, sometimes torn, and all-around disheveled.  This year I decided maybe I’m taking the wrong approach. I love the idea of using plain brown recycled paper to wrap a present, and then dressing it up with cute little toppers. I am happy to say it totally worked – the toppers look really sweet and natural with the brown paper, and kinda detract from the poor wrapping job.

But first, the charm bracelets:

What you need: for the charm bracelets I used silk thread, charms and beads, all from AC Moore.

I love the simplicity of just one charm on the bracelet, and the pretty colors of the thread. I simply added a bead to each side of the charm, with knots on either side. Once I was finished with the DIY, they made nice little holiday gifts for my co-workers :)

Now for the gift toppers:

I used the above items (not really sure what you’d call them?), both of which can be found at AC Moore. I especially love the branches on the left, and they actually smell really nice too. I also used a couple of twigs that I picked up outside :)

I loved the idea of using natural elements like this, and I also picked up some little fake creatures to go with it:

Lastly, in true FP style, I wanted to incorporate little touches of pink, so I used the following supplies from my crafting drawer and our display workroom.

Neon acrylic paint, paintbrush, pink duct tape and pink embroidery floss.

Here are the results!

To make the twig look decorative I wrapped it in pink embroidery floss!

It also makes a perfect perch for the little bird:

Attaching a fake (or real!) flower to the twig also makes it festive – and I love using the hay as ribbon to tie it down to the gift!

For this one I painted random leaves of the branch neon red. This would look awesome on a pine cone too.

Lastly, the charm bracelets also make great gift toppers! Such a nice way to personalize a gift even more :)

Here’s a photo diary of the day :)

DIY Holiday Ornaments

November 2nd, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

It’s November and holiday season is officially upon us – so why not get a head start on your holiday shopping and decorating? When it comes to both of these things, there’s nothing better than something handmade – it gives it that special little personal touch that can go a long way. I can’t get enough of these clear Christmas bulbs because there is so much you can do with them – and they make great decorations or little stocking stuffers for your family and friends :)

For those of you who are coming to our Cambridge Crafting Party on Saturday, we’ll have the supplies to make these cute little ornaments, but for everyone else here’s a tutorial!

IMG 0033 DIY Holiday Ornaments

What you need:

Clear Christmas bulbs – I got these at A.C. Moore but you can also order them online from Amazon!

Gather whatever other embellishments you like! I used yarn, glitter, fake feathers, fake flowers, glue and a little plastic figurine I had lying around. But the best part about these is you can literally do almost anything!

deer DIY Holiday Ornaments

I’ve had this little plastic deer sitting at my desk for a while now, and for my first ornament I knew I wanted to make him a little snow globe :) I gave him a bed of green yarn that I used fabric glue to attach to the base of the ornament. The deer fit perfectly into the ornament – I just dabbed a little bit of glue on his feet and stuck him right in! For the finishing touch I added some white glitter to give the appearance of snow when I shake it.

IMG 0039 DIY Holiday Ornaments

I would love to have a whole tree decorated with ornaments like this – with little woodland creatures and scenes living inside!

IMG 0042 DIY Holiday Ornaments

For my next ornament I filled it with some fake flowers and added some glitter for a little sparkle :) I think this would look really pretty with real flowers too – dried flowers would look so nice!

For the third ornament I used different colored fake feathers – I like how this one looks different as it turns at different angles, and almost like tie dye :)

As a finishing touch, I love the idea of hanging the ornaments with neon thread!

If you guys have any other ideas for what you can do with these clear ornaments, I’d love to hear! I’ve seen some pretty neat ones made into mini terrariums…

Wednes-DIY: Making Natural Dyes

August 31st, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

I have been wanting to experiment with natural dyes for a while now, and with all the great new fall colors that have been popping up on our website (and featured in our monochromatic trend) I decided that it was time. This is such a fun, environmentally friendly project that takes a little time, but very little cash.

For today’s DIY I’ll tell you about what natural ingredients you can use to make natural dyes, and what shades of color they will yield.

fruitandvegetables Wednes DIY: Making Natural Dyes

What I got: red cabbage, lemons, oranges, beets, yellow onions, blackberries, blueberries, spinach.

For bluish/purple dyes:

Blackberries and red cabbage can be used to make bluish/purple dyes.  It’s important to remember when working with natural dyes that experimentation is key – depending on the amount of ingredients you use and how long you leave a garment in the dye, the color you get can vary.

For pinkish/red dyes:

Beets and blueberries can make a really lovely dusty rose color.

For copper/orange dyes:

I never realized what a beautiful color yellow onions can have! Their skins can make an alluring mustard yellow, coppery color.

For yellow dyes:

Orange and lemon peels can be used to make a soft pale yellow dye.

For green dyes:

spinach dye Wednes DIY: Making Natural Dyes

Finally, spinach can be used to make a beautiful shade of green.

Now what?

To make the dye, chop up your ingredients and put them in a pot with twice as much water as ingredients.  Bring the water to a boil and let simmer for an hour.  For deeper colors, you can leave the ingredients in the water (without heat) overnight.

Remove the hard materials from the mixture with a strainer, leaving you with the liquid dye.

Before dyeing, you will also need to create a fixative, which will help your fabric hold the dye.

When working with berries, use a salt fixative – put 1/2 cup of salt in 8 cups of water, put the fabric in and boil for one hour.

When working with vegetables, use a vinegar fixative – mix one part vinegar and four parts water, add your fabric and boil for one hour.

When you remove the fabric, rinse in cold water.

The fabric is now ready to dye! Just drop it in the desired color, let sit until it reaches the shade you want, remove and hang to dry.

I am going to make my dyes and start experimenting this weekend – I’ll share my results next week!

THANK YOU! Ah I love experimenting with natural beauty, & TIP: Walnut shells/hulls can be used to achieve dark brown color, and I’ve found a recipe that calls for 4 walnut shells, 1 cup water, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 1 tsp. vinegar to make ink :)
