Thursday Poll:January Lookbook

January 26th, 2012 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

This January, we traveled to Palm Springs, CA to shoot our lookbook with Alexandra Spencer of 4th and Bleeker. In the book, she takes on the look of a domesticated 70’s wild child as she hangs by the pool and goes about her day in a 70’s ranch style home. The looks are filled with stacked sandals, flowing bohemian prints and ditzy patterns elevated with hard-edged suede, sequins, and funky shades. There’s no doubt this woman is beautifully Free People. Which look is your favorite?

Babaganoush and Homemade Pita Chips with Allison Narofsky

January 15th, 2012 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

This past weekend I had a fun little cooking blogger meet up with local blogger Allison of Allison Eats! We’re both big lovers of food, but we also like to eat healthy. To kick off the New Year, we decided to put together three healthy snacks for eating healthy in 2012. While putting everything together, I picked her brain about graphic design (she works as a full-time graphic designer here in Philadelphia), photography, and food – so to kick things off: an introduction interview with Allison…

me Babaganoush and Homemade Pita Chips with Allison Narofsky

FP Naomi: When did you begin your blog?

Allison: I started it back in October of 2010 – it seems like it was even longer ago than that!

FP Naomi: Where do you get a lot of your cooking inspiration from?

Allison: Definitely my mom – I learned a lot from her. I still make tomato sauce exactly how she first taught me growing up.

FP Naomi: Do you have any favorite blogs or cookbooks that you use?

Allison: Yes! Around the holidays I especially love my Gourmet Cookie Book. It has cookie recipes from Gourmet Magazine reaching back throughout its history – there are some really old ones in there. It’s fun for gift or cookie swap ideas. I still haven’t had the guts to make any that list “lard” as an ingredient though.

Another cookbook I love is Braises and Stews. I picked this one up when I bought my Le Creuset Dutch Oven (which has been amazing). I especially love some of the seafood recipes in here. We made the Summer Stew with Halibut, and it was so good.

The other cookbook I really love is called Baked Explorations. The recipes are from this bakery in NYC, and they’re all around really good. I also like to look at this one for food photography inspiration. They use such unexpected props like vintage items and dice. It’s really out of the box, and looks so beautiful.

FP Naomi: Do you have any signature dishes?

Allison: My guacamole – for sure. It’s kind of funny actually because I always wing it, but people are always asking me to bring it to their parties.

FP Naomi: What do you shoot with?

Allison: I just got a Canon SX3OiS for Christmas! Before that I was using my boyfriend’s camera.

FP Naomi: The photography on your website is great. Do you have any tips for me?

Allison: I usually use a box light to get the lighting right (she uses this one). In my kitchen the light is very orangy-yellow, so it helps a lot.  Sometimes I set up white boards around the food to block out the background. I’m also always picking up single dishes or napkins whenever I find them on sale places.

FP Naomi: What are some of your tactics for eating healthy?

Allison: I swap out fatty ingredients for lower fat options a lot – like low fat sour cream and instead of the regular stuff. I also like to eat a lot of Asian food. It has such bold flavors that you don’t need to use a lot of fat or sodium. You can make a lot of it by steaming – it’s really fresh and natural. Another rule I live by is always bake – never fry.

Babaganoush and Homemade Pita Chips with Allison Narofsky

First up, Allison and I made Babaganoush with homemade baked pita chips. This snack is guilt free, and great for entertaining guests. Here’s how to make it at home!

Babaganoush Ingredients:

2 medium eggplants, halved lengthwise

5 cloves garlic, peeled and thinly sliced

3 sprigs of fresh rosemary – needles removed from stems

2 Tbsp olive oil

2 Tbsp minced pasley

2 Tbsp Fresh lemon juice

3 Tbsp tahini

½ tsp red pepper flake

Salt and pepper

Pita Chip Ingredients:

3 whole wheat pitas, layers separated and each piece cut into 8 parts

5 Tbsp olive oil

1 garlic clove, pressed

Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Arrange eggplant cut side up on baking sheets, then make slits and stuff in garlic and rosemary. Drizzle with olive oil, season with ½ tsp salt, and bake until tender. (About one hour)

  1. Remove from oven and let cool
  2. While your eggplant is cooling, lower your oven to 350F.
  3. In a small bowl , combine olive oil and garlic.
  4. Arrange pita sections onto tinfoil-lined baking sheets, and brush with the olive oil mixture making sure that each slice is evenly coated.
  5. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. At the halfway point, stir up the pita chips.
  7. Once your eggplant is cooled for the babaganoush, scoop the flesh out into a food processor. Add the parsley, lemon juice, tahini, and red pepper flake. Add salt and pepper to taste, and pulse to blend.
  8. Plate and serve!

Style File: Senior Graphic Designer

January 9th, 2012 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

I’ve always thought that our Senior Graphic Designer has amazing style, but for some reason I was under the impression that she was one of those who aren’t a big fan of having their photo taken. I’ve since discovered that I was wrong, and so to make up for lack of showcasing this woman’s amazing style, I decided to feature her as this week’s Style File.

One great aspect to our Graphic Designer’s fashion is her keen eye for texture and pattern. She understands pieces, and how to show off their interesting features. For example, she’ll layer a fun color underneath to show off a top layer’s loose knit, or she’ll call attention to a bold, retro-inspired pattern by stacking it up with basics. Either way, she’s great at creating a balance so that her looks never look like too much.

I’m also a HUGE fan of this woman’s ring collection. She has a great assortment of chunky knuckle decoration full of cute animals and edgy cuts. She’s not afraid to pile on the rings, and will often pair them back to a sweet choker.

Equally as impressive, is her awesome shoe collection. She’s a big heel girl, and her shoes always have attitude. The good sturdy heel gives her look a nicely confident spin.

Overall, her wardrobe of fun pieces is gutsy and playful. It never gets boring seeing what this girl is going to wear to the office.

Try a great choker with a collared shirt to get the look. The Tribal Triangle Collar is a great option to do it with at an easy price .

Blogger Picks: Claire Geist of DeLune Blog

December 21st, 2011 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

The final series in our blogger picks for grunge comes from Claire Geist of DeLune Blog. She’s a little pixie redhead who you wouldn’t normally think of as a grunge girl. Because of this, she brought an interpretation to the trend that was fun to see. It felt fresh and very downtown. The ditzy print of the Floral Shirt Tail Pucker Dress came alive when she paired it with the Vegan 3 Eye Gibson Shoe and ankle socks. The result was grunge but she brought an elegant and feminine twist to the table.

From all of the grunge items she saw that day, Claire told us which her top five must haves are for the trend: the Ramsey Oxfords, Vegan Leather Double Breasted Jacket, Tattered Flag Scarf, Caldra Layer Pullover in Sherbert, and the Cutoff Denim Vest.

Blogger Picks: Natalie Suarez of Natalie Off Duty

Second up on our blogger interpretation of FP grunge: Natalie Suarez

I think Natalie’s favorite part of grunge was the leather (and vegan leather). She went right to our vegan leather pants, and was quick to toss on the vegan vest. She paired the tough girl material with softer slouchier layers. Her take was very earthy. She stuck to the origins of Free People style, and paired it with these updated grunge pieces. In the following look she’s wearing our vegan vest along with the Crinkled Sheer Printed Jumpsuit and Double Shanghai Necklace in silver.

Blogger Picks: Christina Caradona of Trop Rouge

December 19th, 2011 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

Grunge has been on our minds. It’s the cool revival of the 90’s with an “I don’t give an F” attitude. Washed and distressed pieces – leather and studs.  We’re channeling Alice Dellal and Kurt Cobain as we layer it on.

Last week we invited some blogger friends down to help us interpret the look. We piled all of our latest cutoff shorts, leather jackets, grunge tees, boots, and washed pieces into a display – letting them go at it: styling and telling us which items they liked best.

First up: Christina Caradona of Trop Rouge

Picture 0024 Blogger Picks: Christina Caradona of Trop Rouge

Christina (pictured above in our Long Sleeved Mixed Graphic Baseball Tee, Gilded Santorini Collar, and her own jeans) took on the grunge trend effortlessly.  She looks like one tough chick you wouldn’t want to mess with. Perhaps, because she already has a lot of that come as you are, carelessly sexy look you need to pull it off. The clothes wore so naturally on her, making the trend surprisingly organic and hard feeling at the same time. Below she models in our We the Free Reverse it Kachow Thermal, Denim Cutoff Shorts, and Painted Distress Boot.

After trying on and experimenting with many items, Christina tells us what her top five picks are for grunge:

Before she left we asked Christina to fill out a questionnaire for you all. Time to let her speak for herself!
