Post image for the kitten story

guys, you have to check out our homepage right now.  i can’t get enough of it- i love everything about it, the model, the setting, and that cat (remember lily?). the model is sofija milosevic, who was photographed at an amazing home our team found in west philadelphia.  these photographs exude the perfect softness and ethereal atmosphere to lull me into a daydream… longing to curl up in a ball amongst blankets and pillows, just like a kitten.

CAT 2617

our photographer also got some shots of the house to share on the blog, because it really is breathtaking.  the home is located on spring garden street in an area of west philadelphia known as powelton village, a historic district with victorian style estates that were home to some of philly’s wealthiest residents back in the 19th century.

IMG_9507

the current owners, andrew and brian, purchased the house 6 years ago and nearly gutted it to transform it into what you see in these images.  the decoration shows their love of 19th century design and antiques, with most pieces being inherited family castoffs and antique store finds. our team knew that the elegant, dreamy mood of the house would suit our kitten story perfectly.

Hi Natasha! The little cat is a red Persian named Lily. (I think the big one is a Maine Coon). She's actually 4 years old, but she was the runt of her litter, so she has stayed quite tiny. In the winter, she has an even puffier fur coat, but because of the extreme heat over the summer, we gave her the "lion" cut. She's actually only at about 75% of her usual fluff!

and this is why i LOVE the company i work for! i love all the unique, vintage feel of everything, AND!! you guys put a special on a kitty?!! I'm in love. I am a crazy cat lady, and this just made my day!!

Post image for make it perfect and real

i always feel like the best way to get to know someone is to see where they live – a home can tell so much about a person. we’re going to be exploring more homes of fp girls here on the blog and i thought i’d start with my own.

i’ve been living in old city, philadelphia for about a year now since moving back east from san francisco. old city is my favorite part of philly because its rather small and my closest friends live in about a two block radius – as well as my favorite coffee shop, record store and bar. i don’t spend much time at home but i view my place as a safe haven when i need to relax, listen to music and be alone with my thoughts.

this buddha is one of my most treasured possessions – i got it from my dad, who used to collect them.  the beatles white album is my favorite record of all time, and i found this original copy at a thrift store in ocean beach san diego.

101_4122

this is actually a lamp that is currently being used as a hat rack :)

101_4157

more of my favorite things… jewelry box that holds some rings and trinkets that are very special to me.  i still ask my eight ball for advice when i can’t make decisions.  a lucky candle, favorite photo and drawing i did of jimi hendrix.

101_4154

101_4160

i needed a place to hang my necklaces so i put a few nails in the wall.

101_4163

101_4178

the majority of my closet is free people – not because i work here, it was always that way :)

101_4181

i saw someone with this cardboard sign on haight street in san fran and i thought it was awesome.

101_4189

photos of places i’ve been and my favorite grateful dead poster.

art

the majority of the artwork i have hanging right now is concert-related.

101_4223

this little antique mirror table unfortunately does not belong to me, but i love it so much.  i use it to store random little trinkets, photos and concert tickets. and i always have candles burning!

101_4243

my fridge – my favorite quote of all time is in the center.

101_4247

another quote i love, from a jimi hendrix song.  the postcard at top right was sent to me when i got the job at free people and i thought it was the sweetest thing ever. and fun fact about me – i’m a certified bartender in san francisco :)

101_4273

and last but certainly not least – this is my cat, jam <3

alex -Feb 08, 2011, 2:44AM
my cat looks just like this!! his name is bruce. hah

with today being the first day of fall, these table arrangements i saw on design sponge – using straw flowers and heirloom tomatoes -  felt really appropriate as today’s DIY.  the colors are gorgeous!

Post image for if someone asks, this is where i’ll be…

lately i’ve felt really stifled by my apartment…it’s cluttered and in need of a makeover.  fall is the perfect time to do it as the cold weather makes me want to spend more time at home.  i’m longing for a plush couch and armchairs draped in tapestries, hardwood floors and oriental carpets, long flowy curtains to keep the cold outside my windows,  candles, glass bottles and unexpected touches of nature.

i wanted to bring some special attention to this lovely little decorative touch from our september catalog shoot.  these little floral arrangements decorated the tables where our team hung out during breaks from shooting – using jam jars! i think it’s such a sweet little touch, and a great way to re-use the jars too.

Post image for home of the wild unknown

if i had to picture the home of kim krans, the artist behind the wild unknown, this is probably pretty close to what i’d imagine.  i can definitely imagine her creating her simple, beautiful works of art in this peaceful and rustic atmosphere.

The first picture of the moons and the waterfall looks similiar to the one I have and a guy in Ann Arbor painted it on the street. His name is Fernando and we used to see him for many Art fairs but he has left and we have not seen him back for quite some a time now. That is cool.

Post image for back to the garden

i have a really wierd obsession with woodstock.  i wasn’t even alive back then but it pains me to think i wasn’t able to be a part of that experience.  our vintage buyer took a trip to bethel, new york,  and brought back some photos of the festival site and her friend’s place – i nearly died when i saw them. one day i will get there.

The hippy times were so grovy and the pot so good and the people so cool but all good things have to make way for the bad. Evil invaded all that love and poof it was gone. Yeah I was a part of that happening and now I'm 66 years old and looking back it was the best part of my life.

Post image for fall store displays!

like it or not, fall is just around the corner… which of course means new store displays! here are some shots of the new displays at our king of prussia, PA store. the rich colors and the added texture of the yarn is perfect for fall, bringing to mind a cozy knit sweater you just want to wrap yourself up in.

SDC16212

SDC16219

i love how the fabric seems to be dripping from the ceiling, like the store is oozing creativity.

SDC16190

you may recognize the fabric covered vases that have been pictured around our home office and at our costa mesa store.

i think my favorite part of the display is the yarn.  it is also used as decoration here at the home office – i love it, the colors make me happy :)

101_3203

amazing work again, guys!

Val -Jun 09, 2013, 11:57AM
Anthropologie sells these quilts as found objects in their stores. The prices range from $200-$300 which may be why Free People won't sell or give their sources for the quilts. There are many vendors on Etsy who sell kantha quilts and many who will see you a bundle of, say 10 for the price of one at Anthro. check it out: http://www.etsy.com/listing/127455855/10-wholesale-vintage-kantha-quilt-kantha?ref=shop_home_active If you can sew or are resourceful in finding someone who can make your curtain panels, Voila!

I also love the curtains you use in your dressing rooms. Where can I buy them? Are they for sale? Hope so. Love 'em.

daydreaming

Post image for daydreaming

it’s one of those gray, rainy days in philly where you just want to curl up under the covers and sleep all day.

if only i was here…

vieques

…at the w retreat and spa in vieques, puerto rico.  the rest of the decor doesn’t look too shabby, but it’s those rainbow chairs that got me.

Lauren -Aug 05, 2012, 3:36PM
I went here on my previous spring break and it is even better than it looks! Take a week off and go there!!! You will not regret it

You can buy those rugs online. They're called Mad Mats and they're made of recycled plastic bottles or some such. Perfect for patios since you can hose them down. I have one just like in the picture with the blue couch.
