these were invented by buckminster fuller, who had amazing, forward-thinking ideas about sustainability, urban crowding, and eco-preservation. he used these structures because triangles are the cheapest, strongest, most versatile shape to build with--not like the rectangles we mostly see today.

i would love a little dreamy dome home like these!

Post image for feng shui at work

our vintage buyer brought an article over to jemma about how to feng shui your desk at work, and i immediately decided my desk needed a makeover. my feng shui was all wrong… and with the beautiful weather we’re having today it felt like a good time to do some spring cleaning!

feng shui3_2

(the article is from whole living magazine)

here’s what my workspace looked like before – a cluttered mess!

IMG_3384

to feng shui my desk i followed the instructions above as well as i could with what i have here at work.  i put my plant, dreamcatcher and buddha figurine in the back left (or top left) area, with a photo of the sunset over the pacific in the background to make it feel as zen as possible. the bottom left area has a collage of photos from my latest trip, just kids, “music we like” from amoeba (a great music reference), my little journal and peaceful accents of blue. at the top right i have photos of loved ones and notes and cards from friends at work, and at the bottom right i hung some scraps of fabric to inspire creativity.

here’s the end result:

it may not look much different but it sure feels better! now i just need to feng shui my apartment…

Isabel -Feb 06, 2013, 8:35PM
This article was super helpful! I'm moving into an apartment and this is the perfect time to de-clutter and give my space a fresh new look!

Post image for california dreamer

continuing with our tour of all things california, today i have a special peek into the home of our visual manager for the west coast region! she lives in the silver lake section of LA with her boyfriend (who is in the band sea wolf) and adorable puppy claude, and describes her home as “mid-century vintage with a heavy dose of southwestern/navajo objects tossed in. we are also inspired by our love of the desert and have about 20 beautiful, thriving succulent plants potted on the porch!”

sounds awesome! let’s check it out…

left: “I try to run 3 or 4 times a week around the Silver Lake reservoir. This is one of three giant staircases to run up on the way back to my house, which is located on a hill in Silver Lake!”

“This vintage chair was given to me many years ago by my dear friend Kelly. The chair has moved from Athens, GA to Madison, Wisconsin to New York City to Los Angeles. I’m still in love with it and can’t believe she gave it to me!!”

“Books, books..we can’t get enough. I’m obsessed with photography books (obviously)! The vintage cameras were my grandfather’s.”

“I swear I wear that vintage leopard scrarf almost every day. Ted got the alligator head on tour somewhere. Bracelet is FP!”

“The dining room table is vintage, bought in Brooklyn. Chairs are antiques from Anthropologie and the little chair covers we bought in Joshua Tree, where Ted and I fell in love!”

Post image for at home with a visual display artist

today i have a special tour for you of the home of one of our visual display artists who lives out in california! she actually used to work here in the home office, but relocated to the west coast to work on displays for our stores in the western region. she’s very talented and the epitome of a free people girl, as you’ll see in the photos of her home and personal style.

i’m already jealous.

you can see that she has been hard at work – on our spring store displays!

pc3

i love the record player, and the requisite chewbacca mask – we have a bunch of them floating around home office :)

pc2

she told me that her grandmothers have been huge influences on her life. the photo at top left is her grandma ella, about whom she says, “she died when i was young, but i resemble her most and admire her work ethic and grace. she raised my dad and he raised me to explore and travel. he took me on trips across the country when i was young and as an adult. that father, daughter time has been so rewarding to me as an adult. we have been on a lot of adventures as a family!”

the most important thing in her home is the “wall of objects” at bottom right. she’s pointing to a photo of her grandmother joan, about whom she says “she taught me how to sew, crochet, knit, and cross stich. i spent a lot of time crafting with her. she and my mother taught me how to be creative in everything i do throughout the day. the two of these ladies have been very inspiring!” she also collected giraffe figurines, and the ones at bottom left were the first ones in her collection.

check out the slideshow for lots more photos of her lovely home!

Post image for one potato, two potato…

…three potato four.

i never heard of it until our graphic designer mentioned it as one of her favorite vintage stores, where she finds some of the awesome stuff in her home.

then today i was getting coffee and saw a flyer for a barn sale the store is holding this weekend and i checked out the website… now i know one thing i’m doing saturday!

the shop is full of hand-picked vintage treasures ranging from books, signs, glass bottles and mugs to blankets, furniture and other various oddities.  plus it’s owned by a sweet married couple with two adorable little kids :)  check out their blog too, where they post shop updates and cute family photos.

this is the first barn sale they’re holding – as a change from having normal hours, they will have one of these every month. check out their website for more info!

I remember them from a Cookie magazine article! they seem pretty cool, lucky you live near their shop. they only had one child when that article came out, cute family,,

Post image for at home with our graphic designer

lizzy janssen is an amazing artist, has great style, and is just an awesome person- so its no surprise that her home (in fishtown, philadelphia) is a reflection of all those things. lizzy describes it as somewhere in the early american, meets 1950′s housewife, meets mid-century modern neighborhood :) another fun fact – it was designed by our creative director, who lives here!

i’m completely in love with her place…the exposed brick, the spiral staircase, the amazing bathroom and her adorable cat arlo in the above picture (named after arlo guthrie).

1

most of the stuff lizzy has decorated her place with – the furniture, paintings and figurines – was found at thrift stores, garage sales, and sometimes even on the curb! her favorite thrift stores in philly are germantown thrift and three potato four, in manayunk.

2

here’s a quick little interview with lizzy, and check out more photos of her sweet place in the slideshow below!

lizzyb25

you can check out another tour of lizzy’s home here!

i’m so in love with these hand-painted wooden coasters that i saw on design sponge the other day! they have been painted with hex signs that the author traced onto the wood with carbon paper, but it would be fun to make your own patterns as well :) such a great way to add a bit of color to your coffee table!

done_spread

the colors are perfect. click here for the full tutorial!
