Going on a winter hike can be magical: the snow falling all around you, cozy mittens on your hands, hot cocoa in your thermos. But it can be disheartening to watch winter animals search for hard-to-find food. Give them a hand by mixing up a batch of birdseed bombs before you head out—tie them on trees or drop them behind you as you walk. Read more »
Today’s DIY might be one of my favorites that I’ve done… I’m not sure why, but there is something so adorably sweet about these little embellished figurines. They can be used in so many ways, too… hang them on your tree as ornaments, wear them around your neck as a fun holiday necklace, place them around your home as decorations, or use them as gift toppers. Bunting is a fun way to decorate for a party; it’s easy, pretty, and you can hang it anywhere you like. The other day here at Free People it was my sister’s Bridal Shower and for the occasion I made some bunting to hang delicately on the wall. The theme I used was “a couple in love” and printed out photos of her and her fiance throughout the years they have been together. Read more »
UPDATE: This post originally ran on November 1st 2012 but we wanted to share it again while we still have some time left to take advantage of those beautiful fall leaves!
One of the best things about fall is without a doubt the gorgeous explosion of colors when the leaves turn. The mixture of vibrant red, orange, yellow, and green is breathtaking and I hate that it’s always so fleeting. Read more »
Every year when I was growing up and my parents put out our holiday decorations, my favorite thing was a somewhat large snow globe with a miniature winter scene inside. Read more »
There are tons of different kinds of crafters out there. Some of us like to create more functional works of art, while others make things that are purely for aesthetic purposes. Some like enduring huge craft projects that take days (or even weeks) to finish, while others are more interested in simple projects with instant results. Read more »
UPDATE: This previously ran November the 6th but as holiday is approaching we thought we’d bring it back this weekend for some inspiration.
The festive season is approaching, that time of year when you feel like wearing little sparkly details. Our November catalog has now launched, and inside there’s a whole lot of magic. I wanted to bring the magic more to life by embellishing a plain pair of socks, adding a little bit of festive fun to an everyday outfit. Read more »

I never thought I’d say this, but a sewing kit is something that I always like to have on hand. You never know when you might need to fix an article of clothing, re-sew a button on a shirt, patch up a hole, etc. Read more »

Come winter all I seem to wear almost every day is my winter coat, and I must admit it does get a little boring. Your outfit changes underneath of course but because of the biting chill your coat becomes your number one piece for commuting. Over these last couple of weeks I’ve been thinking about ways to mix it up a little, adding in certain details that can make a difference, like brooches, a colorful scarf, embroideries or…an applique cuff that is so easy and quick to achieve. UPDATE: This post originally ran on October 4th 2012 but with Thanksgiving coming up we wanted to share it again since these would make lovely decorations!
It’s that time of year…pumpkins are pretty much everywhere you look, and I don’t mind one bit – there is something about their plump orange appearance that is so loveable. Plus, in addition to making great decorations, they’re also pretty delicious. I had some wax left over from my homemade lip balm so I decided to use it to make some candles – and then I thought, why not turn mini pumpkins into candles? Read more »
