Braving the Elements

Sometimes, as winter blankets our surroundings with its bitter chill, it’s tough to stay fashionably motivated. Rising out of bed in the morning involves a laborious upheaval from an all-too-comfortable toasty nest. The last thing you want to do is spend time, half-naked in a drafty bedroom, pulling an outfit together. It tends to turn into, “grab the first items in your drawer, and pile them on as fast as you can.”

To dress well as the air gets chillier though, we’ve come to realize that the under layer becomes less important. To pull off a great look that won’t leave you freezing, it’s all about that top winter layer. Here, some of the Free People girls show us how to move into the new season while keeping it fresh with a few of our favorite jackets. They remind us that a good scarf and hat can go a long way to trap in heat, and, don’t forget, the season’s must-have item – a pair of killer close-toed boots. All of these things – jacket, boots, and winter accessories – will help you bring those easy under layers into the new season.

So chill and relaxed! Our sweater designer is wearing: The Vintage Wine Leather Jacket, Pink Floyd Tee, Joan of Arctic Boot, Loop Knit Beanie, Crystal Honeycomb Bib necklace, and her own pants.

DIY Holiday Ornaments turned Accessories

Have you guys seen our beautiful collection of holiday ornaments? We have chosen some of our favorite jewelry designers to collaborate with, interpreting their aesthetic and materials into ornaments that can be hung on a tree! The ornaments are lovely, and the best part is – all of them can be turned into accessories that you can wear and enjoy all year round :) Our team helped put together some awesome tutorials on how to do this – first, we’ll show you how to turn the ornaments into earrings or necklaces!

DIY ornaments turned into earrings

What you need:

A pair of pliers and two earring hooks – you can find these online at places like amazon or at your local craft store.

We used the Zodiac Coin Ornament – I love that these have little fortunes on the back :)

diy-earring

Using your pliers, remove the large hook that comes on the ornament.

diy-earring

Replace the large hooks with the earring hooks, using the pliers to pinch them shut.

diy-earring

You now have a new pair of earrings :) It would be really cute to mix your own zodiac sign on one ear and a loved one or best friend’s sign on the other!

DIY ornaments turned into necklaces

diy-necklace

This one is really simple – all you need is a chain of your choosing, and, depending on which ornament you use, you might need the pliers.

We used the Crystal Claw Ornament:

Remove the ribbon the ornament comes with.

And add the chain! Easy peasy.

These ornaments would make great earrings OR necklaces:

From Our Store Girls: The Perfect Gifts

It’s the season for giving gifts, and we just launched our Holiday Boutiques last week full of great gift ideas. It can be a little overwhelming when it comes to picking out the perfect present, so we decided to ask our store ladies across the country what would be on their wishlist this year!

Haley, Farmington CT: Socks!

“I just bought both colors of the broken arrow soft socks! And i know once my sisters see them they’ll want them too, so I think they are the perfect gift/stocking stuffer!”

(I have to agree, I am wearing these socks today and they are the BEST.)

Brandi, Shrewsbury NJ: Bralettes

“Our bralettes are the best FP gift for the holiday season – they are the perfect add-on to any outfit for a pop of print or a dash of sparkle!”

tysons

Brooke, Tyson’s Corner VA: Multi Stripe Pullover, Lace Buttondown, Feather Hair Clip

“I love the idea of these three pieces as a gift together – each item is really unique and versatile or can be worn on its own; the pullover sweater with a pair of denim shorts and tights, the lace buttondown with a beautiful black skirt and the feather clip on any day of the week. But the beautiful thing is that if someone wanted to put a look together as a gift all of these items would look amazing put together.”

atlanta

Raven, Atlanta GA: The Ruffle Legging

“The ruffle leggings are fun, funky and sexy! I think every lady should rock a pair of these.”

oregon

Morgan, Portland OR: Stockings for your stockings!

Socks are a great way to help your loved ones stay cozy this holiday season! Socks are one of life’s often over-looked luxuries that many don’t often splurge on for themselves.  Such an easy way to feel pampered and spoiled! Plus, sizing is usually not an issue :) ”

Style File: Merchandising Intern

Fresh out of college, our merchandising intern here at the office has sleek, cool-girl style. She pulls looks together with the ease of an off-duty model – rarely sporting color, and rocking a repertoire of easy tees, skinny jeans, ankle boots, and leather. Tattoos pepper her body with an added edge that’s subtle, but present. Behind all that seriousness is a sweet girl ready to ask you how your weekend was and share a funny story behind the pieces she’s wearing. Seeing her outfit each day was an excitement – I hope it you all think so too!

Free People Through the Decades: The 1970s

The 1970s has always been a decade that fascinates me – it was such an interesting time of change. So many life-altering events took place in the late sixties, that the 70s seemed like a period when people were a little “dazed and confused”, turning to new types of music, film, or travel as a form of escapism. Many writers and musicians traveled to Morocco, where we shot this decade of our holiday catalog – seeking a change of scenery and inspiration. Others turned up in droves at Studio 54, to enjoy the disco music craze and dance the night away. Fashion was all about personal expression – from sequins and flowing dresses to floppy hats and bell-bottoms to the menswear look made famous by Annie Hall.

Pictured, clockwise from top left:

Musician and 70s fashion icon Carly Simon

Fleetwood Mac, who released one of the biggest albums of the 70s, Rumours, in 1977

Almost Famous captures the music scene in the 70s based on Cameron Crowe’s experience touring with some of the decade’s biggest bands, including the Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard and Led Zeppelin.

Vanitas

“An artistic collaboration with stylist Kathi Kauder and photographer Sabrina Theissen. For these collages Ashkan Honarvar used Vanitas symbols in a search for the equilibrium between life and death. The woman depicted features different animal eyes – remnants of the instincts that guide people under extreme circumstances.”

Office Style

We’re layering up to brace the elements here in Philly today. It’s one of the coolest days we’ve had yet this fall and boy is that wind slap-in-the-face cold. There’s no doubt we have tights on underneath our shorts, and those jackets are no longer an option, but a necessity. Of course, that doesn’t stop the lovely Free People ladies from throwing on an ace outfit. Check out how we’re doing it today…

Our brand-new and very first Las Vegas boutique opens today! We threw an opening bash last night with live music by Avalon Landing and styling by Lauren, Free People’s Art Director and Head Stylist. There was an amazing turnout flooding the store with fashionable women from far and wide.
