Style File: Sample Coordinator-Accessories

Fierce jewelry, tights, and boots are all staples in our accessory sample coordinator’s fall wardrobe. Hailing from Florida her wardrobe is warm weather heavy, but she’s pulled in the power of layering to update it for our cooler Philadelphia climate. Instead of ditching the shorts she pulls in the accessories – tights, socks, and boots – to keep them wearing into fall.

The end effect of many of her outfits is an interesting mix between naughty and nice. Sweet elements like a romantic blouse or cozy girl-next-door socks are paired in the same look with sexy lace or edgy snakeskin. It keeps you guessing, and pulls you into the details.

My personal favorite accessory a girl can have – Abigail!

I love the coordination between her boots and the bag she was carrying – very well thought out.

Trendspotting: Fancy Collars

Shirts have become a fashion focus with an emphasis on the collar. Styled individuals are wearing their shirts buttoned up – right up! But it doesn’t stop there…
Decorating the collar is key in creating a quirky new take on this trend whether it is with a necklace or actually customizing the shirt collar itself.
Right now we love this collar necklace as it allows you to create a quirky collar twist with almost anything!

Are you all collared up??

Oh… and stay tuned for a DIY next week

Office Style

I think the word for this week’s office style is eclectic – a little bit of this, a little bit of that. Outfits were right on trend, with a bit of something unexpected thrown in.

This outfit takes me off to dream land. What a great interpretation of the all white trend.

Glitter Lita’s – what a fun way to spice this outfit up! Get the same effect with these bad boys here.

Thursday Poll: Which Sweater is Better?

In the switch from Spring to Summer I gave away a bunch of sweaters to make room in my dresser drawers. I’m now beginning to regret that decision as cooler air moves in and I’m getting bored with my current options. I’ve been looking around for pieces to fill the void, and The Weather Pattern: Fairisle and Nordic collection on the Free People website has some great options built in there. I’m loving these patterns and chunky knits.

Which sweater do you think is better?

Store Style for Fall

A great batch of photos from our various store gals showing looks they love for fall!

Love this look of the extreme velvet flares worn with the 2-pocket sheer crop top over the glitter mesh layering top.

The americana sweater jumper looks so cute with the printed thermal cropped bralette, fringe and feather hair clip and textured tall sock.

store-style

I love how she dressed up the velvet overalls with the pretty gini lace top and leopard clutch.

store-style

Everything about this look rocks! The lace bell bottom, the lovebug thermal layered over the floral burnout henley, the chainmail bib necklace and the hair!

store-style

Perfect fall look: the gypsy lover maxi skirt, graphic henley, slouchy velvet blazer and brit boot (and Dillinger!).

store-style

We love layering with the maxi robe! Pictured is the moon duster maxi worn over the swiss dot seamless slip with a scarf.

store-style

A great boho look: the extreme vintage flare, pleated lace trim crop top and zigzag print turban.

Or for a chillier day, the extreme vintage flare with the cannaregio mesh top, floral woven pullover and velvet turban.

store-style

You can wear a sleeveless dress in fall! Just add a layering top like the dotted lace tee underneath! Looks extra cute with the knitted ranger hat.

store-style

You can never have too many layers! The lovebug thermal, crochet back plaid button-down, denim shirt, margarita texture scarf, vegan leather shorts, floral tight and hacienda lace-up boot.

store-style

The color of this cashmere shrug cardigan is gorgeous! Looks lovely with the extreme velvet flares.

store-style

This is such a cute grunge look! The lace bell bottoms, graphic muscle tee and plaid button-down.

And last but not least, give your bodycon a little twist by adding a pop of color underneath! Pictured: the fp spun velvet leaf dress, seamless slip, brit boot and boucle textured jacket (my new love – i just bought it!).

You all look amazing ladies!

DIY Personalized Denim Shirt

I’ve been really into the menswear trend lately – I love taking pieces borrowed from a boy and giving them a feminine twist. Then I saw this photo on tumblr and inspiration struck! I knew my next DIY project would be customizing an old denim shirt by adding a pop of colorful pattern.

What you need: collared button-down shirt of your choice, pretty fabric of your choice (try old clothing you don’t wear anymore or thrift stores!), scissors, needle, thread and safety pins.

diy-denim-shirt

Lay the shirt flat with the collar folded up.

diy-denim-shirt

Place the fabric on the shirt, and you can either mark on the shirt where you want the fabric to cover, or you can cut a piece of fabric that is slightly larger than that area – this is what I did. I wanted to make sure I didn’t cut too small of a piece, and i figured I could just trim the edges later on, which ended up working perfectly.

diy-denim-shirt

Use safety pins to attach the fabric to the shirt so it doesn’t move around as you sew.

diy-denim-shirt

Start sewing! Sew along the seams at the top and shoulders of the shirt, and then straight across the back.

diy-denim-shirt

Once the fabric was sewn to the shirt, I went around the edges with my scissors and trimmed the excess fabric.

And that’s all there is to it! I’m pretty stoked about my “new” shirt!

We have some shirts online right now that would be great for this!

DIY Newspaper Nails

– paint your nails with base coat of choice (a light color will work best)

– once dry, soak nails in alcohol

– press piece of newspaper to nails one at a time, and remove

Blogger Meetup: Elsa of Styleabaad

last-drop

On Friday I met up with Elsa of the blog Styleabaad for coffee. She chose the spot – Last Drop café on 13th and Pine. I live in Old City and rarely come over this way, but I was completely charmed by this coffee shop! I love cafés that feel homey and unique, the kind that makes you want to bring a book and get cozy and stay a while.

I first met Elsa when I posted a photo of her on our blog, not realizing she was currently living right here in philly! It just so happened that same day she was at the Free People home office visiting her friend, our Art Director. Small world, huh? We decided to meet up and talk about blogging, fashion, philly and more.

elsa-styleabaad

Elsa is fascinating – she is from Sweden, and has been living in Philly for three years now with her husband. She loves to write and travels often – the last 12 years she has been traveling to India, where she has spent time in an Ashram and also worked various jobs including backup dancer in Bollywood films. In addition to her blog, she is working on a novel about her travels – I for one would love to read it! She also had some really interesting perspectives on fashion in Philly vs. fashion in Sweden, and what it was like to move here as a foreigner. Stay tuned because she agreed to write a guest post about it for our blog :)

I also couldn’t get over how cute she looked with her blue hat, backpack and kate spade bike!

I had to get a closeup of her awesome nail polish too – what a cool idea!

Style File: Intimates Designer

It’s easy to see why this week’s style file landed a job as Free People’s intimates designer. She won’t just look at a piece as something to be worn underneath your clothing, but she also has the creative mind that can look at it in different contexts, and style it in completely unexpected ways that work. Her everyday wear mixes great intimates pieces – think slips, lace, and bloomers – with more conservative pieces and funky accessories. Her style borders the line between graceful beauty and edgy tough girl. It’s that deep understanding of intimates, and amazing ability to style them in a variety of ways, that explains perfectly why this is her area of expertise.

Her mom gave her this gorgeous vintage night gown. I think it might be one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen.

Office Style: Another Fall Day

It’s definitely fall. The office was filled with cozy looks to prove it. Sweaters, boots, and jackets were at every turn.

I knew I loved these boots, they give this outfit that special added touch.
