FNO 2011: Getting Creative with Free People in NYC

Tonight is our fashion night out event; we’re kicking off fashion week with style!! if you’re around that area please come and join us – we’ll be there with our creative directors and these ever so cool bloggers from Honestly WTF who will be carrying out a special DIY project.

Here’s what inspires them about NYC

New York in 4 words…

Ambitious, home-away-from-home, sleepless, and fashion, baby.

What we are packing…

We’re totally embracing the grunge-chic trend this season: ankle boots, skinny pants, oversized sweaters and a little sparkle to top it all off. Of course bell bottoms, maxis, and hats will forever be staples in our closets.

Best Places to go in NY?

 1) We love brunch in NY. It’s a battle between the baked eggs at Café Gitane and the Turkish eggs at Public . . . I’ll have both, please.

2) Christie’s Auction House in Rockefeller Plaza is a great place to go see an art exhibition. Not a lot of people know that it is free and open to the public.

3) Daha in the Lower East Side has the most extensive collection of vintage boots in New York City.

4) Whenever we’re in New York, we always stop by The Little Branch for a sweet libation.

5) Dropping by the first floor of ABC Carpet & Home is always a must – it’s full beautiful things and perfect place to pick up a gift for someone.

One Free People item you’ll be taking into fall…

We’re kinda dying over these Hatchett ankle boots – love the asymmetrical cut and distressed details. They are the kind of boots you live in all season long!

September Catalog Behind the Scenes with Martha Hunt

It’s a rainy, chilly day in Philadelphia and I wish I could jump inside these behind the scenes photos from our September catalog shoot. They have me longing to curl up on the couch in a bulky sweater and drink hot chocolate while listening to records.

Vintage Missoni now available in Vintage Loves!

missoni_family ad

When you think about fashion with amazing prints and patterns, surely there is one name that springs immediately to mind. Missoni. Founded in Italy by designers Ottavio and Rosita Missoni, the brand has been known throughout the years for their use of bold patterns, mixed fabrics and kaleidoscopic colors. Our Vintage Loves line has just launched a collection of Vintage Missoni pieces and I was completely blown away when I saw them.  The pieces are pricey but they are fashion treasures, and the colors and patterns are at the very least some pretty amazing eye candy.

Plus, they’re modeled by one of our beautiful home office ladies which provides some awesome styling ideas for how to wear these pieces in a modern way.

Describe New York City in 4 words…

Lustful, sharp, unpredictable, aggressive

What are you predicting for Fall Fashion?

A preppy cool, is what I’m chasing for fall – lots of tweeds, cool denim and brogues. I’m loving the thought of Annie Hall mixed with a sweet Francoise Hardy. Velvet in jewel tones are on my mind worn with rugged knits.

Who is your style muse?

I admire many people’s style; my muse is someone who has a fusion of great vision, a beautiful mind and innovation. If they have all three then they’ve got me good.

A favorite place in NY?

A great coffee shop in NY always makes my day. I tend to nestle there for a couple of hours people watching and what not – The Smile, 26 Bond Street New York

is perfect for that!

One Free People item you will be taking into fall…

Aged leather wingtip brogues

Designer Jewelry by ACB

ACB

All it took was one read through Annie Costello Brown’s bio and I was intrigued…very intrigued.

This month’s featured jewelry artist, she is the designer behind ACB – a line of hand-made pieces in materials including leather, bronze castings, vintage chains, natural shells and semi-precious stones. Her creativity and design sensibilities originated in her childhood, growing up in the  Sausalito houseboat community of the 1970s and 80s. This was a community of artists, musicians and crafters who established their own sort of counterculture in the Northern California bay, and nurtured her own resourcefulness and creativity.

sausalito-houseboats

sausalito-houseboats

The community still exists, but went through a period of intense struggle in the late 70s and 80s called the “House Boat Wars” that was between the houseboat community and wealthy developers that wanted them out. This no doubt was also influential on Annie Costello Brown’s upbringing and the work that she would one day create.

This history kept playing in my mind as I looked at the ACB pieces we are carrying – the eclipse necklace, with its combination of leather, chains and beads, the texture and blue beading of the cyanea necklace and the fierce looking linea blades necklace. I can see the influence of the Sausalito seas and unique architectural elements in the necklaces featured in our September catalog. The collection has something for everyone, ranging from bold statement pieces to delicate casual elegance, all with an underlying intrigue that speaks of turmoil, triumph and fierce individuality.

And just for you, here’s a little peek inside the ACB studio!

Office Style: Store Managers

This week the office has been very full! All of our store managers have come into town for workshops and meetings that are going on at the home office. As they rotate throughout the building you can’t help but notice the beautiful fashions they showed up in. Many have on Free People pieces, and it’s so fun to see how they interpret the items for themselves. True to Free People spirit, there’s a lot of flowing bohemian looks, gypsy-like patterns, and intricate crochet/lace. It’s not often that we get to have these ladies around, so we snapped their style while we could. Enjoy!

Thursday Poll: Mad About Plaid

Plaid is totally in right now (okay, it’s pretty much always in), and we have tons of it on our site. It’s the perfect print as we’re moving into fall since it has a warmer, cozy feel. Which plaid piece will you be getting for your wardrobe?

How to Style: Layering from Summer to Fall

Tomorrow is the first day of September! I can’t believe fall is almost upon us. But don’t put away your favorite summer shorts, skirts or tanks just yet! You can still layer with these items going into fall and create some really cute silhouettes that are right on trend. Jemma and I worked with our videographer to make this little video showing how to style your favorite summer outfit into fall!
Song is Jonathan Fire Eater “I’ve Changed Hotels”

Look One: Layering with Maxi Skirts
Start with a skirt or similar style like the floral gauchos, one of your favorite dressy tops and heels. Add a thermal, tall boots, leather jacket and scarf to transition to fall.

Look Two: Layering with Pants
Start with any style of bottoms and a tank top and ankle boots. Add a hat, light weight cardigan and jacket to transition to fall.

Look Three: Layering with Shorts
Start with your favorite pair of shorts, summery blouse and boots. Add tights, a loose knit and hat to transition to fall.

Which look is your favorite?
