spring is in the air today in philly! warmer weather is on its way, i can feel it in my bones, and i’m so excited to wear lighter clothes and brighter colors and prints. like maybe…floral shoes and socks? it’s such a sweet look and literally puts some spring in your step. which of these floral shoes would you wear?
We have fallen head over heels in love with Bass shoes. That 50’s jive look is growing on us in a big way.
Bass has collaborated with Rachel Antonoff to design a collection of sweet/masculine looking shoes. I think these shoes are perfect for spring; add them to your cute dresses or make your jeans a little more interesting.
What I like about Bass is the quality leather and thorough workmanship; you know you’re invested in a pair of shoes that will last a lifetime.
I think they are endearing, and I love how they have been styled on Tennessee from The Like.
We’d like to know, are penny loafers your thing?
James Dean made them ‘cool’ in the 50’s after he was seen rocking around in them but we love to know how you fp girls would wear them?
with our latest catalog being shot in california, i wanted to get some insider scoop on what its like to live there – i’ve been to LA several times but could never see myself settling there…san francisco was much more my speed. so who better to ask about life in so cal than two fashionable bloggers that were born and raised there – natalie and dylana suarez!
where in LA do you live?
in the valley area of los angeles.
what is your favorite thing about living on the west coast?
natalie: i love the beautiful weather and constant sunshine. i’m not much of a gloomy weather type of person!
dylana: my favorite thing definitely has to be the beautiful weather we always have year round, all the amazing beaches we can go to on a sunny day, and the amazing thrift / vintage shops.
what are some essential pieces every girl in LA must own?
natalie: a great pair of skinny jeans and comfortable boots! also, a big bag is great for toting around everything you need on hand.
dylana: every LA girl must own a good pair of denim shorts, maxi or ankle length skirts, a good pair of leather ankle boots, silk blouses, and a lightweight blazer.
where are your favorite places to shop/eat/go out?
natalie: we were born and raised in santa monica so that is definitely my favorite part of the city. i love main street and montana avenue for the cute, little restaurants. i love 3rd street for the shopping. from there, i usually walk to the boardwalk and beach.
dylana: i love to shop on the santa monica promenade or the americana in glendale. my favorite place to eat is also santa monica because you can get just about anything there and there are a lot of cute little restaurants to eat at. i also really love main street in santa monica.
3rd street promenade, santa monica
is there a certain spot/place you like to go to get away from it all?
natalie: i love hiking up will rogers park on the westside. you get beautiful views of all of los angeles and it is super relaxing.
inspiration point, will rogers park
dylana: if i want to get away from the city, i can just stay right at home in the valley, where things are of a much slower pace. i also like to go up to ventura and to relax on the beach or do some thrift shopping on main street over there.
what’s your ideal way to spend a day off in LA?
natalie: my ideal day off would be biking along the beach from santa monica down to venice. in venice, i usually grab abbot pizza and gelato at nice cream!
dylana: i like to meet up with friends at a new restaurant that i haven’t tried yet to just hang out and laugh. i also love to spend a few hours at the bookstore reading magazines or i head to the movies. another thing i love to do on my days off is take a nice long bike ride or hike around my neighborhood. it totally clears the mind!
and here are their picks from our february catalog – i could see them wearing any of these pieces and looking lovely in them!
we have a new lookbook for february, featuring smoking hot model marloes horst! she has such unique and striking features…i love the above photos of her taken by benny horne- she also just did a gorgeous editorial in jalouse. but what i love even more are these lookbook photos, featuring a sweet little prop that might look familiar :) so tell me, which look are you in love with?
Make his heart race or make her shine with pretty lace and sexy silk. Pretty slips that can be playful and worn dressed up outside the house. Make cute with delicate accessories or add coolness with moccasins and tattered satchels. She will become an angel for the day!
Hi! I’m Free People’s creative design assistant and February guest blogger! I consider myself lucky, because I get to help with the creative process in developing the image of Free People, and also have my hand in styling. I work directly under our creative director, who is best described as creative sunshine.
our creative director on our February catalog shoot preparing for the next shot.
Ok, so here are some tidbits from this catalog’s creation process: the concept was first outlined and sketched in a notebook by our creative director.
Here are some tears that were collected for inspiration on how we’d like the shoot to go before we get on location.
Finally shooting day arrives and the end result is like magic!
stay tuned for more posts from me this month, and check out my personal blog here!
when it comes to videos, having the right song can make all the difference in the world. for me, that’s what really grabs my attention and sucks me in so that i can’t stop watching. one of the reasons i love our videographer’s work so much is that she always picks the perfect song – i don’t know how she does it. the song in our february catalog video is no exception…”throwing hail marys” by gypsy death star. i had never heard of them before and wanted to learn a little bit more about them…
based in ventura, california, gypsy death star is a collaboration between producer cesar augusto and singer/song writer wyatt hull. they combine trance-like electronic beats and haunting lyrics to create a sound that will transport you to a different place in your mind. read on for a brief interview with the band and check out a video of them performing “throwing hail marys” below!
when and how did gypsy death star come about?
i put an add out on craigslist for a beat maker and cesar responded, we started making tracks together through emails, & the rest is history..
how do you guys describe your music?
a cross between dark ambient techno & electronic indie rock
if your music was a color, what color would it be?
is there a certain song you’re most proud of?
some may be slower, some may be more full of wisdom, but were equally proud of all our children.
what’s your favorite venue you’ve played in, and what venue do you dream of someday performing in?
we recently played at the deer lodge in ojai, california & that had a magical ambiance. we both dream of someday playing the conan o’brien show, we’re big fans of his, or perhaps one of those sesame street episodes where they bring musicians on.
what’s your pre-show ritual?
cold high-quality brew.
who are some of your biggest musical influences?
cocorosie, t-rex, q lazzarus, tv on the radio, portishead, syd barrett, the pixies, and david bowie.
if you could see any band, past or present, perform live, who would it be?
kraftwerk’s performances when they used robots and any of the first ziggy stardust shows would have been rad to see.
all-time favorite record?
pink floyd’s “pipers at the gates of dawn” for wyatt. queen’s “game” for cesar.
what’s coming up for gypsy death star? any exciting plans in the works?
we’re looking at doing a small tour in mexico, we have a music video we just finished shooting in which we do some tag team wrestling, and are currently mixing a new full length record do for release soon this year.
