Post image for a day in the life

we thought it would be fun to give you a little glimpse into the world of some of our fp girls, so to start out, we followed one of our designers for a week! we watched as she designed a garment from start to finish, had some of her designs tested out on a fit model and presented concepts and finished items to our design team. i can’t show you too much yet, but here’s a preview of what you’ll see in the video (coming soon)! stay tuned!

Post image for february catalog drops tomorrow!

the theme for the catalog is “raw,” heavily inspired by nature – flowers, feathers, shells and raw materials, as well as lace, crochet and fringe.  the above beach shots were very inspirational, as well as the photographer dan martensen’s past shoots at the bonnaroo festival and with fashion muse erin wasson.

i think the end result is lovely!

Post image for an artist we love…

kris chau is one of our fp girls, and she’s also a really talented artist.  she has a show opening tonight at topstitch boutique in philly (54 n. 3rd) called “puppy face” featuring some of her new works, so i thought i’d ask her a few questions!

where do you draw inspiration for your work?
i draw inspiration from the girls around me, lyrics from hilarious songs, my dog, flowers i see, and artists i admire.

who are some of the artists you admire?
yuko shimizu, zeloot, genevieve castree, tim gough, rob sato, ako castuera.

what is your favorite thing to draw?
well ladies of course. ladies, ruffles, shoes, and puppies.

with a full time job here at fp, when do you find time for your artwork?
sigh, that is a question i get quite a bit and i ask myself the same thing. i give up a lot of social things and maybe grooming to do both. my life at free people gives me many opportunities that i will forever be grateful for, and due to my lack of free time making art has become incredibly important to me. it becomes something very serious in a way, i now create things that i do not compromise, i’ve taken a less illustrative and more arty route these days. my position at free people is also creative, so creatively i feel like every week i run a marathon and i am constantly trying to balance it all.

do you listen to music while you draw? what do you listen to?
i listen to a lot of podcasts (thank you fresh air and ira glass i will send you more money) as well as booty shakin jams to keep my spirits up.

what are some of your other hobbies?
gardening and playing with my sweet sweet puppy.

if you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want with you?
my sweet tim, my sweet puppy, and a lifetime supply of cucumber soda.

photo (3)

photo (3) pr4inting

if you’re in philly stop by topstitch boutique tonight between 6 and 10pm!  a bunch of us fp girls will be there :)

also check out more of chau’s amazing work on her website!

An Item Of LOVE

Post image for An Item Of LOVE

I’m head over heels in LOVE with the Lucky Charm Romper. Cleverly enough it can become two outfits for the price of one!

Wear it under denim shorts to reveal a cute peek-a-boo of ditsy print or just on its own- I’ll be wearing mine with barely there blank tights, seductively loose slouchy socks and ankle boots, with a big chunky cardigan, until the sun starts to give warmth.

Oh and keep your eyes open for the piece in the up and coming Feb Catalog- It’s candy to the eyes!

Post image for ‘fp me’ part two!

when we saw how amazing your “fp me” photos were that you posted on facebook, we knew that we had to do something special with them. we are so inspired by seeing how real girls wear free people clothing and love seeing your individual styles. so we are doing it again – this time with a new twist! we will choose some photos to be featured on freepeople.com!

to be considered, please submit photos of yourself showing how you style fp pieces. upload them to the fan page wall on our facebook page between now and 2/12 and label them “fp me”! photos chosen will be featured on freepeople.com later this month.

* also, please note – if you already posted pics for the last fp me, you will be considered for fp me part two, so no need to resubmit them.

can’t wait to see all your photos!

fp julia -Feb 08, 2010, 2:52PM
hi elizabeth! can you go back and label it as "fp me?" or just put "fp me" in the comment section? we are only going to use photos with that label, just to be safe so we don't end up using someone's photo who didn't want to :)
Elizabeth -Feb 05, 2010, 7:11PM
What if we uploaded a picture but didn't include "FP me" in the fb post? is it still okay? :( Thanks!

Post image for wednes-diy

this is an old pair of jeans that i love, but they’ve got three holes in them.  i was okay with that for a while but now -  maybe because it’s so cold out – i decided it was time to patch them up.

here are some images i found around the web and saved as inspiration for my project:

i really liked the idea of using different shades of denim and prints with blue in them…

this patch of fabric is actually the inside of a pocket from an old pair of jeans, but i love the way it looks – and it fit perfectly over the large hole in the knee of my jeans!

patch

i used scraps of old denim for the other patches:

and here’s the finished product!

i think they look much better.  the only thing i’m not sure about is whether i should do something to the bottoms or not – i might attempt something like this (the genetic patched flare):

…but i can’t decide. what do you guys think?

you should check out kristen and val's rendition of the birkin jeans...so cute...i did them last week on a pair of bleached wide legs and they turned out realllly well http://www.bleachblack.com/?p=7345

Post image for fp loves…jessica seaton

we’re so excited to introduce you to our new favorite jewelry designer – jessica seaton! here’s the story of jessica, how we found her, and why we love her work.

one fateful day, we were on a shopping trip in venice, CA when we went into a cute little boutique. we stumbled upon some of jessica’s brass & bones collection, and instantly fell in love. jessica happened to be in that very boutique when we were shopping…and the rest is history. she showed us some more of her collection and we knew we had to feature her in our boutique!

jessica, originally a fellow east coast girl who is now living on the west coast, moved to los angeles to pursue a career as a makeup artist. she took up sculpture as her art form, which in turn led her to jewelry design. her current collection was entirely hand sculpted using the method of ‘lost wax’. (lost-wax casting is the process by which a bronze or brass is cast from an artist’s sculpture.) in jessica’s own words, “the collection is entirely hand sculpted using the method of ‘lost wax’, which is a dying art because we live in the day and age of computer generated design and laser cutting…but i think you can feel the energy that was put into the handmade pieces, they carry the energy. i started the collection while i was on a short sabbatical in big sur, ca…finding dropped antler’s around the cabin and property i was living at…people responded to the pieces, which were bit more dramatic back then… and now we have brass and bones…the collection.”

jessica seaton currently lives in venice, CA with her cat bernadette.

check out our collection of jessica seaton’s designs here.

From my experience, I would recommend NOT using her to build custom anything. I used her to make an engagement ring for me and she ruined my plans because she would not communicate with me at all. Never responded to emails. She let me know the day of my proposal that the ring wasn't coming. Now 3 weeks later I just got it. It wasn't what I was wanting but she never would send me pictures during the process so I was never able to give input when in the wax stage. Read the full story here http://jessicaseatondesigns.com
