Post image for A Girl we much LOVE

Isabel Lucas is a girl I admire so much. I love her relaxed approach to fashion, she never looks boring. I find there’s always little touches to her outfits that intrigues me whether it’s a floral scarf, a little pinch of embroidery or a wicked vintage T. She knows how to use fashion to create a style that works for her personality and comfort zone. Above all, she has a great heart. She’s an active volunteer for so many charities that it’s hard to keep track of her. One of her most recent being Sea Shephard.

She’s my favorite muse, I heart her!

She is my favorite! She was in the heartbreaking documentary The Cove about the yearly dolphin slaughters in Taiji Japan. She's my biggest inspiration!!

Post image for remembering martin luther king, jr.

with martin luther king, jr. day falling in the wake of the tragedy in haiti, the words of dr. king seem especially poignant…and remind us to think about what we can do, not just in a time of need like now, but on a daily basis, to make the world a better place.

Post image for jennilee marigomen

you may remember this post i did a while back about the incredibly talented photographer jennilee marigomen.  well she sent me an email last week about an upcoming show she’s curating (more info on that below), and i decided to ask her some questions for the blog!

what is your favorite thing to photograph?
“strange things that don’t really belong, everyday phenomena.”

do you carry a camera around with you at all times?
“yes -  if i don’t have an SLR with me, i usually have a yashica T4 in my bag.”

What inspires you on a daily basis?
“negative space, nature, music and light. and tumblr. :)”

if you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want with you?
“a teepee, canoe, and a camera.”

how did you get involved with 01 magazine?
“i met vancouver based stylist redia soltis in 2008 while we worked on a photo shoot for clothing designers beth richards and brian mendoza. we kept in contact and a few months later, redia and artist nathalee paolinelli approached me about working on 01 magazine. we took a trip to portland to work on our first issue and hit it off instantly. we are working on our fifth issue right now and feel very lucky to have such a great team and awesome people wanting to collaborate and contribute.”

if you weren’t a photographer, what would you do?
“i currently work in the creative marketing department for a canadian clothing distributor, and really love it.  i think that working on photography focused art events for a living would be so amazing too.”

what is your theme song?
“it’s hard to decide.. but “smog in cities” by black moth super rainbow has been my ringtone for the past year.”

if you could go anywhere in the world, free of cost, where would you go?
“iceland’s natural landscape, filled with hot springs, geysers and glaciers are so magnificent and transcendent – the photos i’ve seen look unreal. i think that iceland encompasses everything that i love to photograph. i would be thrilled to see it in person someday.”

if you could spend a day with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?
“mark borthwick or andy goldsworthy.”

here’s just a small sample of jennilee’s amazing work:

i definitely recommend checking out more of her work on her website.

the show that she curated is called stream, a photograph projection show that will take place in two locations (baltimore’s pent house gallery and l.a.’s space 15 twenty) on january 22nd at 8pm. for more info click here.

thanks so much jennilee!!

Post image for It’s Time for Change

I’m almost done with Winter, aren’t you? I’m bored of the dull weather and more importantly the DULL colour scheme in my wardrobe!

So I’ve decided. Note to self- that from now on I’m going to introduce a little bit of ditsy floral into the mass of Grays, Blacks, and Browns that are over consuming my rails. I thought maybe it will work as a “perk me up” and contribute to the excitment of spring that follows. You never know.

This morning I created myself a little capsule wardrobe from the New In items on the web. So many beautiful items have been launched this week!

All that’s left to do now is count the days until Spring.

Its time to brave the cold like a little snow drop and showcase all things ditsy and pretty.......i so cant wait!!xxxxxx

lennon wall

when i first saw the photos from our new catalog, i was immediately curious about the graffiti covered wall.  i did a little research and found out that it was named the lennon wall following the death of john lennon in 1980.  since then it has been covered with graffiti pertaining to lennon and his lyrics, as well as notions of peace.  during the period of communist rule in the late 1980′s in prague, western music by artists like lennon was banned. young people would write their grievances on this wall, eventually leading to a clash between them and police on the nearby charles bridge. this movement was referred to by the czech authorities as “lennonism.”

despite attempts to repaint the wall, the graffiti kept coming back and is now tolerated… right on.

haiti

Post image for haiti

our hearts go out to all the victims of the devastation in haiti.

free people will be making a donation to american red cross to help communities affected by the earthquake.

Zola -Jan 15, 2010, 6:27PM
I think that it is great that people are donating to the country but... i also think that it is sad that it took such a horrible NATURAL disaster to make the world actually pay attestation to the UNNATURAL atrocities that have occurring within the country for a ridicules amount of time..it is also even sadder that the majority of these things are still going unnoticed.. -just my 2 sense
