style how-to! the lace & chiffon slip

the chiffon and lace slip dress is without a doubt one of our most versatile items.  it’s all about the layering and how you style it – and fortunately we have the girls of free people highland park to offer up some fabulous ideas! (you may remember these very same girls showing multiple ways to wear the ruffle bottom slip not too long ago!)

wear it over the ruffle up solid tunic to get a cute “little black dress” look! accessorized here with the reese woven leather belt and peacock charm necklace.

on the right – get girly with a printed mini under the slip and the medallion tunic over top.

and last but certainly not least – the slip adds cute femininity to cargo shorts and the short sleeve scoop front tunic!

fantastic ideas, ladies!!

through our concept intern’s eyes…

I made a collage using photos of scenes and images found around the office. The swatches of embroidery, illustrations, and inventive assortments of trinkets fuse into a colorful blur when I walk past each desk and I hope that the collage recreates that fleeting moment of wonder for you.

Hi there! Not too long ago I was sitting in the same position as many of you, clicking open BLDG 15 and hungrily peaking into the community that is Free People through a film of curiosity soaked in lilac hopes, blue intrigue, and yellow aspirations that blended together until I saw the letters Free People tie-dyed in my dreams. I performed my ritual click on the BLDG 15 link, only to see the opportunity of interning for my favorite company unravel before me; fast forward two months and here I am. Every day this week I arrived home at seven o’clock and collapsed, exhausted, on the sofa, to the confusion of Rambo, a furry black thing with soulful eyes…only to wake up the next morning eager to do it all again.

The first day that I wandered around the office, several vibrant FP girls told me that someone in the building is always with a camera, and everyone loves having their picture taken, even if they claim otherwise. It was this fun, open friendliness that convinced me to shed my hesitant dance in the isle between “pods” and feel at ease when propelling my feet into every workspace where smiling face upon smiling face greeted me and insisted that I click away. What I have enjoyed the most in my first few days in Building 15 is how at every corner, in any nook and every cranny, there is a treasure to be discovered.

I have spotted a streamer cascading from the ceiling, marveled at the aged walls and how much character oozes from their imperfection, and became inspired each time that my eyes landed on the mixed samples draped across walls or gathered in soft heaps of leather and shine on the floor. Perhaps my favorite adventure yet has been the journey on which I embark each time that I explore the workspaces of the individuals whose instinctive creativity drives the company.

When passing by desks, I feel as if I am peering through a window into each employee’s life – their haven – learning what inspires and relaxes them. I have witnessed loose pages of artwork; butterflies plucked from their paper origins and perched over organic plants; scraps of dazzling fabric used as a refuge for pins.

Everywhere I turn waits something magical.

The bodysuit!

The new bodysuit trend is making me go giddy. I’m a huge fan of the bodysuit. It’s just so darn easy and Incredible if you want to show off your figure! I went through a stage when I was 18 of watching Fame and Desperately Seeking Susan with my friends like, nonstop. We would try and imitate the wardrobes then rock out onto the streets thinking we were the coolest EVER! Embarrassing I know, but everyone I guess has been there.

I love that this 80’s look has made a comeback over the last couple of years and has managed to stick. This time around there’s a fresh new look going on. Sensual lace bodysuits will add a WOW factor to any outfit.

Many girls wear them with shorts to give an easy slim line look.

They also become great layering pieces too. You can wear then under vests like a second skin. They hold you in well so why not! And give a great little detail around your neckline.

I think this summer I will be wearing my floral bandeau under mine with denim cut offs. DONE!

Shindig

shindig2

Lately I’ve been obsessing over Indiana Jones style hats. I recently saw Risko from src783

Looking might fine in one and it just made me WANT one even more. I’m thinking here a perfect shindig outfit or

a look I would wear late afternoon drinking in a local dive bar. The hat, an oversized denim wrangler shirt with bike shorts underneath of course and

these lovely little clogs.

All I need now is for Friday to hurry up and get here!!!!!!

What our Fp girls are into!

Untitled-3

I get a little curious sometimes. I like to get inside the minds of other people here @ the office and find out what’s making them tick  and then maybe it will make me tick too.

I asked one of our Senior Buyers for Web what’s inspiring her at the moment. she’s one of those girls who always look stylish and on trend but adds little bits of quirkiness to her everyday look I sneek a glimpse at her almost everday and I’m never disapointed.

So here’s her lowdown on her style file;

“Hey! I’m loving heavy metal rings, knuckle rings and body armor jewelry and I’m loving big vintage kimonos worn as coats or jackets.

I’m loving the whole Chloe range too :) the little sensible satchels are gorge.

That 70’s mum vibe is rocking me. xxx”

[3:32 PM]:

OMG I forgot I am OBSESSED with Isabel Marants Fall collection .

meet the concept intern!

i am thrilled to introduce you to our new concept intern! i know a lot of you were very interested in this position and curious to see who we hired, so read on to get to know her a little bit and to see more of the beautiful concept boards that she put together. the one below was the overall inspiration board that she submitted with her application for the internship – she did an amazing job!

“When I flipped through magazines in search of tears to use in my inspiration board, I tried to keep an eye out for photos that exuded the Free People energy that has pulled so many hearts toward the brand. I sprinkled elephants, birds, and gems like vintage inspired lockets and beaded silk bracelets here and there to represent the freedom, love of life, and pull towards the one-of-a-kind that is so prevalent in the Free People aesthetic.”

Where are you going to school and what will you study?

I have just graduated high school and will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. I hope to double major in English and Visual Studies.

What is your dream job?

I am floating in it! Ever since I first discovered Free People I have dreamed of becoming a FP girl! Even before I encountered the brand I knew that what I wanted most from a workplace was to be surrounded by an endless outpour of creative energy, and Free People epitomizes this ideal. From the moment I stepped into Building 15 I knew I had found it.

How would you describe your personal style? What are your favorite items from free people right now?

I love to wear pieces that are comfortable but make their presence known to me when I’m wearing them—clothes that, when put on, summon images to me and make me feel like I am in some distant land only realized in my dreams. My favorite Free People items now are the Paisly Garden Printed Tank, Vlatava Convertible Skirt, Military Ruffle Jacket, and the New Crinkle Floral Dress.

What color are you?

I’d like to think lime green because that is my favorite color… but I really alternate between mellow yellow and a deep, gray-tinged violet.

What is your motto?

In terms of survival: live and let live :)

In terms of personal philosophy: butterflies are free, and so are we.

What is your favorite hobby?

Running used to put me in my place of Zen, but ever since my shins decided to get injured, I have turned to tennis to fill that role. I also cannot think of a more uplifting activity than playing with my mischief maker, Rambo (who also happens to live up to his name).

If you could spend a day with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?

I would love to spend a day with Roger Waters or David Gilmour of Pink Floyd to learn what went through their head when they wrote such brilliant lyrics and produced such beautiful melodies. I would also have loved to spend a day with the creative genius that was Alexander McQueen.

dreamscapes flattened copy

With this concept I strived to capture the fleeting moment of bliss that, when experienced, seems to last a lifetime. I chose colors and blended photos in order to achieve a mood of serenity, and featured girls adorned in ruffles and lace to characterize the optimistic, girly Free People girl that wears her heart on her sleeve and soaks up life. I chose to accessorize the board with rings and brooches that bring to mind images of translucent waters and cloud-crinkled skies.

Cool chic flattened (2)

this concept board is set in the heart of September—that time when a trace still remains of the warmth of summer but the chill of oncoming October begins to settle over the land. The inspiration centers around a girl who is relaxed, cool, and calm and wears clothes that reflect those same qualities. It is Sunday morning and she runs to the market to pick up fresh vegetables and basks in the tranquility of the a.m.. To balance the tomboy elements in her look, she highlights her femininity (and her rocker edge) through subtle sparkle by implementing marcasite rings and brooches and clothing with stud embellishments into her wardrobe.

fleur flattened

This mood board encompasses everything that is girly and sweet about the Free People Girl. Flowers strike her fancy…so what does the Free People girl do? She wears them, of course. In this collage, the flower child can be found blossoming underwater or else reading within terrestrial jurisdiction, as well as pedaling through the town, leaving a trail of silk behind her.
