Post image for thursday poll – edition 72

good morning…hope everyone’s day is off to a great start!
for last week’s thursday poll i asked about our touched converse. there were several to choose from, and the most votes went to the hand drawn floral converse!
we’re loving tunics right now and we have quite a few different styles, so this week i thought i’d ask, which tunic is your fave?

the burbank tunic:

the davenport beach tunic:

who doesn’t love snow globes? there’s something very nostalgic and whimsical about them.  plus you can bring a pretty little wintry scene into your home and make it snow whenever you want.  i found some instructions on how to make them, and it seems really easy…

these handmade snow globes from martha stewart are simple and sweet.  you can use almost any kind of jar to make them…the instructions suggest painting the lids in seasonal colors.  find the plastic or ceramic figurines at flea markets or hobby and craft shops, and synthetic evergreen tips at floral-supply stores.

next, sand the inside of the lid until the surface is rough and use clear-drying epoxy to adhere the figurine to the inside of the lid. let the epoxy dry.

fill the jar almost to the top with distilled water. add a little bit of fake snow or silver or white glitter and a dash (not too much!) of glycerin (available at drugstores) to keep the glitter from falling too quickly.

screw the lid on tightly, turn it over and let it snow!

the top two images are from anthropologie.

Post image for musical ornaments

if i had a christmas tree, these are the kind of ornaments i’d put on it. i saw these on pitchfork and I think they’re so cool – they’re recycled christmas tree ornaments made by the glass casters union in oregon, and proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go towards helping homeless and low-income families in oregon. this year’s designs include modest mouse, blizen trapper and the decemberists (shown above). i also like some of the ones they’ve done in previous years:

Post image for firefly literacy fund

some friends of mine are involved in a nonprofit organization called the firefly literacy fund that I think is really cool…it’s all about bridging the opportunity gap in the city of philadelphia by working with families, teachers, schools and shelters.  they have donated hundreds of books to elementary school students and this past october they worked really hard on turning the library at the southwark elementary school into a relaxing and inviting space where kids would want to spend time…and they did a great job, as you can see in the above images. they’re having an event this wednesday to raise money and awareness for this important cause…click here for details, and check out their website fireflyfund.org!

are any of you involved in good causes? what charities are you most passionate about?

take a listen to this very merry holiday playlist from our free people stores!

Post image for fishtown holiday walk

if you’re looking for something to do in philly tonight, head on over to fishtown, where they’re having a holiday walk this evening from 6-9pm!  over 25 local businesses are participating and they’ve all got specials going on…there will be live music, art exhibits, food and drink, holiday shopping specials and more.  a couple of things that sound particularly cool are a craft fair at the rocket cat cafe (2001 frankford) and a new vintage boutique called two percent to glory (1817 frankford) that is opening up this evening, prior to their grand opening.

here’s a list of participating businesses:

i stayed in philly for some time, and i fell in love with the city, primarily fishtown and kensington. there's an amazing ministry on poplar street, called trevor's place, where some of the most wonderful children i have ever met live. if you've never been, i suggest your staff get involved there, these children will tug on your heartstrings and change your life.

Not listed on the Holiday Walk (but participating), is the grand opening of the new Part Time Studios! Be sure to check out their open house and gallery. It's north of Rocket Cat on Frankford. http://parttimestudios.com/
