if i had a christmas tree, these are the kind of ornaments i’d put on it. i saw these on pitchfork and I think they’re so cool – they’re recycled christmas tree ornaments made by the glass casters union in oregon, and proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go towards helping homeless and low-income families in oregon. this year’s designs include modest mouse, blizen trapper and the decemberists (shown above). i also like some of the ones they’ve done in previous years:
some friends of mine are involved in a nonprofit organization called the firefly literacy fund that I think is really cool…it’s all about bridging the opportunity gap in the city of philadelphia by working with families, teachers, schools and shelters. they have donated hundreds of books to elementary school students and this past october they worked really hard on turning the library at the southwark elementary school into a relaxing and inviting space where kids would want to spend time…and they did a great job, as you can see in the above images. they’re having an event this wednesday to raise money and awareness for this important cause…click here for details, and check out their website fireflyfund.org!
are any of you involved in good causes? what charities are you most passionate about?

here’s a list of participating businesses:

good morning! ready for this week’s poll? last week we asked about coin purses and pouches, and it was very close but the denim and chain pouch just beat out the pretty in beads coin purse by a mere 5 votes!
we have all different kinds of touched converse right now so this week i want to know which pair of converse you all like best…

another holiday download for you! click on the image to go to our flickr page and download this cute wallpaper for your desktop, done by our incredibly talented designer kris chau :)
i saw this diy idea on the site nice package and i thought it was so cool i had to try it myself – they’re vintage photo gift tags that are super easy to make and a great way to take a plain-looking present and turn it into something special. if you like to wrap gifts in recycled newspaper or paper bags (as i do) i think these would be a really cool addition to dress it up.
get some metal gift tag rings at an arts & crafts store…i got them at a.c. moore, and they came with those little stencils on the right that make it easy when it comes to cutting out the pictures.
i used some cool images i found in magazines, and i glued some cardstock on the back to make them sturdier.
all that’s left to do is punch a hole in each one and string through twine or a thin ribbon. i like this natural hemp cord…
…and you’ve taken a plain looking gift and given it a personalized touch :)
you can also find all the supplies to make your own vintage gift tags at nice package’s shop. click on the image below for their downloadable pdf of gift tag images.
philly’s own outdoor olympic-sized skating rink, the blue cross riverrink, reopens today for three months of ice skating enjoyment! located at penn’s landing (where market st. meets columbus blvd.) the ice rink is right on the delaware river and has beautiful views of the ben franklin bridge and philly skyline. plus, if you go on friday or saturday nights between 8:30pm and 1:00am, there’s a live dj and/or karaoke.
even if you’re not great at ice skating, it’s a ton of fun to try and a great workout as well :)
