Post image for A Free People Rendezvous in Chicago!

Did you know that Chicago was recently rated one of the best cities to be a single lady? That got us thinking… what will our most devoted single (and coupled for that matter) ladies wear on their dates?

To celebrate our newest Free People store opening in Chicago, we decided to bring out our Art Director/Lead Stylist who is responsible for so many of the amazing Free People looks – and she will style you ladies for your next date night!

We hope you’ll join us, share some snacks provided by Southport Grocery & Cafe, and celebrate our new store opening!

The event will take place Tuesday, September 6th 6-9PM

at our new Chicago store, 3447 N Southport Ave, Chicago IL

Doors officially open on September 7th, so you will also get a first peek at the newest collection and have the chance to shop early!

And, please feel free to bring a guest, just let us know if you can attend and how many will be with you :) You can RSVP on our Facebook event page.

Looking forward to meeting all of you!

xo Free People

Post image for Store Style: The Extreme Vintage Flares

One of our favorite fashion trends going into fall is the wideleg pant. We have several wideleg styles right now, including one of my personal favorites, the extreme vintage flares (and their new cousin, the extreme corduroy flare!). These jeans can be a little intimidating if you don’t now how to style them, and luckily our store girls are here to help out with just that! They always have great styling ideas, and these photos demonstrate our love for another trend as well – the crop top! In particular, one of our newest, cutest ones – the thermal love crop top. We love pairing wideleg bottoms with cropped tops, adding extra layers over top or underneath as the weather gets cooler.

From San Jose: The extreme vintage flares worn with the thermal love crop top, arizona blanket wrap and jenoah floppy brim hat.

From Burlington, MA: the extreme vintage flares worn with the stripe cowl neck sweater.

Post image for Fall Displays are up in Free People Stores!

Our display team continues to blow my mind… for Fall they have turned our stores into an enchanted forest of color and texture.  Window screens crafted out of tree branches, sweater fragments, neon tape, yarn and other embellishments invite you into the store, where you are greeted by walls hung with embroidered canvas sacks, wooden flowers,  patchwork flannel canvases embellished with sequins and cutouts, and even a magical free people deer. Take a look!

free-people-fall-displays

One of our fp girls cut pieces of her own sweater to use in the branch screen, making a cute crop top!

free-people-fall-displays

I love the colorful branches! Some are wrapped in fabric or string and some are painted. There are so many different fun combinations you can try!

free-people-fall-displays

Some of the canvas sacks are stuffed with sticks, while others hang flat on the walls. I love the bright colors and patterns of the embroidery!

All the tiny details make me smile.

free-people-fall-store-displays

This might be my favorite part – wooden flowers are taped in rows to the walls with neon pink duct tape! I am definitely thinking about doing this at my apartment.

free-people-fall-store-displays

free-people-fall-store-displays

how amazing do the flowers look on the wood panels?!

free-people-fall-store-displays

One store made their own little “barn” with wood and drew on it with chalk :)

free-people-fall-store-displays

pretty rad bike.

free-people-fall-store-displays

And last but certainly not least… the deer! Each store has one, and it arrived at the store as a plain statue which they then paint and embellish.  So amazing! I love that each one is unique and special.

Post image for Weekend Getaway: Find a Swimming Hole

There are a lot of things I love about Austin, but near the top of the list are the swimming holes. When we were down there for our July catalog release party, it was sweltering – over 100 degrees. So the Saturday after our party, with a day off to explore, we went straight to Barton Springs.

Barton springs consists of four natural water springs, around one of which is a man-made pool that is one of the most popular places to hang out in Austin. The water is COLD – and the best way to deal with that is to gather your courage and dive in. When you do, the rush you experience is refreshing and rejuvenating. Some Austinites believe that not only is it good for your mental being, it’s also good for your health. I can definitely see how that may be true.

barton-springs-austin

On the near side of the barrier in the pool above is a smaller pool where you can take your pup swimming! Barton springs costs just $3 for a full day, and is open until 11pm (night swimming!)

We didn’t have time to visit this next one, but if I ever find myself back in austin (and I hope I do) this is on my list of things I MUST do.

hamilton-pool-austin

Yes, this is in Texas. Hamilton pool, located 30 miles outside of downtown Austin, is a natural pool that was created when the dome of an underground river collapsed from erosion thousands of years ago. The result is secluded pool surrounded by cliffs and huge slabs of limestone, into which a waterfall runs. Getting to the pool requires a steep quarter-mile downhill hike – but it’s more than worth it.

hamilton-pool-texas

hamilton-pool-texas

After seeing the amazing swimming holes that Austin has to offer, I thought, surely there are swimming holes near Philadelphia? Indeed there are, and while it might not be on the same level as the ones above, Devil’s Pool is a swimming hole right here in Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Creek.

devils-pool-philadelphia

devils-pool-philadelphia

devils-pool-philadelphia2

Chances are, where you live you have a swimming hole nearby as well – and with the crazy heat coming this weekend, this might be a necessary thing to do!

Check out swimmingholes.org, where you can view maps of all the swimming hole locations near you! The site was started by a man from Philadelphia named Tom, who runs the site purely as a hobby with the help of his friend Dave.  Why? “Tom and Dave like to explore, find and enjoy these hidden pools in natural settings they find a natural swimming hole in a beautiful setting to be very nurturing and soothing to the body and soul.”

Agreed.

Barton Springs is, indeed, the most healing water I've ever known. I grew up just a few blocks from there and every time I return to that icy water, all is right in the world once more.
Folk & Fairy Tale -Jul 25, 2011, 10:36AM
I put this to use this weekend and found a swimming hole off the website and dove in yesterday. It was FUN! I got bit by something on my bellybutton, but still fun :)
