I started journaling on my vacations a few years ago. I like to note hotel names, restaurant names, and the sightseeing spots of that day. In addition, I have journaled funny stories/memories and like to play a "remember the city," game with my husband. So, I read the story and he has to remember when and where it happened. It's fun! :)

Great read! Heading to New Zealand solo in a week and this just helped give me a new perspective on journaling!

"The outcome cannot matter" (258). The outcome, how the world perceives your art has nothing to do with you. The reward is in process; the gift is the creative journey. Preach, Ms. Gilbert!

I really liked first few pages when she talked about Jack Gilbert, it reminded me of my English professor and how inspiring he was, how he encouraged (at least me) not only to improve our writing, but also be successful, creative and LEARN (because there is a difference between learning something and just listening & getting information). I think when a person, like Jack Gilbert, is passionate he or she wants to share it with someone and inspire others. Then next few sections of the first chapter weren't that interesting for me. The idea was good, but the way it was written... I just tried to finish the chapter to see what's coming next. Now I see some people felt the same way - so I'm excited to read next chapter, hopefully it will get more fascinating and inspiring. I also loved how she talked about being brave vs being fearless. I think it is important to know and remember that there is always fear within us and we cannot or even shouldn't "kill it off". We need to embrace it and learn how to control it. It is always scary to start something new .

This post is written beautifully. It is elegant yet simple and powerful. I think most of us have experienced moments such as these, maybe not in another country but right in our backyard. Knowing the small peaceful moments of life will come and go is a wonderful feeling. I love the part where you dance with the little girl. I can see the imagery in my head and it brings me peace.

Kirby - I completely agree - I love how unapologetically enthusiastic she is about her passions.
Kirby -Nov 30, 2015, 2:39PM
M Train is one of the best books I've read in a while. It is a book that sucks you in. Just as Patti talked about being transported into Murakami's world...we are transported in to hers. Her writing is so rich. So hypnotic. So full of life. I love her enthusiasm for all things. In a day where most people are ashamed to talk about their passions, Patti is a light in the darkness. x Kirby KirbyJoanna.com
