All of the fancy fashion designers created special matrioshka dolls for Vogue Russia's 10 year anniversary. Stella McCartney's is probably my favorite (the first one with the sandals and the painted toes?!) and these are some of the cuter ones. But check out the gallery on Vogue to see all of the crazy ones, and some are pretty crazy.
Which one is your favorite?? (The ones pictured are Stella McCartney, Burberry, Dolce and Gabbana, and Pucci, but look at the rest!)
These great pictures are from the first issue of Wassenaar, a new online photography magazine that I am enjoying very much! Definitely check it out if you like photography! These particular photos are by Alexander Binder, Andrés Marroquín Winkelmann, and Justin James Reed, from top to bottom. Check out Wassenaar if you want to see more!

I just needed to share how much I love Frankie Magazine. It's an Australian mag for the 20-something crowd, and their blog is really great too. Lots of crafts and pretty things, eco-friendly products, new designers, all that great stuff we like to know about:)
I must admit, I haven't checked out N.E.E.T. magazine in a while, but the September issue is out and it looks great! I guarantee you will discover lots of new bloggers, vintage enthusiasts, and crafters you have never seen before!
If you love this zine, and are the creative type yourself, make sure to check out the faq section at the end to find out how you can get involved...
A friend introduced me to issuu last night, and now I have a new place to explore for amazing e-zines! The layout is really simple and images look beautiful. Spend some time and search around, or make your own zine, portfolio, photo album, whatever.
Be sure to check out design for mankind's issues of INSPIRATION and get inspired.
Has anyone used issuu or have a favorite zine? Share with us!
Check out these photos from Italian Vogue featuring some fuzzy felines! I love that blue tile bathroom too. See the rest over on Cat Party or find a copy of Italian Vogue.
Meow.
Check out this post over on love forever. She has picked up the latest issue of Selvedge and posted these beautiful photos from a spread on the women's clothing of Salvador, Bahia in Brazil. Definitely makes me want to see the rest of the images. (photographs by Fedor Van der Valk)
"Open a copy of Selvedge and you sense there is a philosophy that Selvedge readers subscribe to. A belief system based on a cerebral and sensual addiction to textiles in all forms. Readers share a belief in the importance of their material surroundings and a passion for the beautiful and beautifully made.
Our aim is simple: to provide a textile publication which fits seamlessly into their creative lifestyle. Directed towards an international, discerning audience, Selvedge covers fine textiles in every context: fine art, interiors, fashion, travel and shopping."
I was flipping through the third issue of Craft: magazine (the one put out by the makers of Make:) and this picture was just so striking. This is just one little corner of a garden created by Diane Salavracos in Belgium. She buys odd colored spray paint from graffiti shops and then paints dried flowers, broken branches, Halloween pumkins, pine cones, etc. to create a year round colorful wonderland. Not as environmentally positive as a growing green garden, but it looks really cool.
I really love this digital mag style will save us, and they love "all things super-stylish, organic, ethical, eco-friendly, vintage, recycled and sustainable." In the current issue, they did an article on re-worked vintage and featured the "post-vintage" work of fashion and art collective Andrea Crews (pictured above). Check out the article here...
One of my favorite artist / bloggers, Anahata, is on this month's cover of Cloth Paper Scissors! I picked up this magazine for the first time a few months ago, and it's really great for artistic inspiration, especially collage ideas and techniques. I'll definitely be buying this month's issue to check out the feature on Anahata...
She sent the above F & P tags to Free People as a little present, along with a bunch of other amazing paper goods she designed. Check out her goods and her blog too!
I promised I'd share the goods in the latest (sorry, I managed to get newspaper smudges all over the cover)...So this issue made me start thinking that the crew at Lula has gotten into my brain. Featuring an ode to defunct teen wonder-mag Sassy, Henry Darger, Bat for Lashes and Grey Gardens, they just know what's up.
My absolute favorite part is a pull out poster illustrating a tap dance by Zooey Deschanel. You will love it.
no good for me posted today about Kime Buzelli, an amazing artist and one of my favorite bloggers (check out The Moldy Doily). She makes it sound like she has way too much fun in her Echo Park hood in LA. And through The Moldy Doily today, I discovered the latest issue of Lula is out, and Kime contributed! I'll be at the mag shop after work. I'll be sure to share discoveries over the next few days...
Somebody commented on kate's desk entry about their common love for matriochka dolls. So I thought I'd share these hand made screen printed dishcloths with a matriochka motif. I spotted them in April's issue of Dwell and you can check them out on roseandradish.com. This site has a lot of really clean modern designs, but they occasionally break it up with something cute and whimsical like these towels. I personally fell in love with the one below featuring cutlery and cars.
First read about the Cheap Date Guide to Style on stylebubble, and quickly decided Susie was probably right. If you're attracted to this book, you probably already have a pretty good idea about your personal style and they are just preaching to the choir. Susie felt it was more of a "style affirmation". Then I saw the above article in March's Dazed & Confused, and now I'm thinking twice. It looks more interesting the way they highlighted the funny tips and inspirations. So I think I might just pick it up! Let me know if anyone has it already, and what you think.....
Check out March's of KnitKnit . This month features the "Knitting Nation Manifesto" by Liz Collins. Remeber the radical lace & subversive knitting exhibit I posted about? Well, word has it, some of the girls here at Free People will be involved in a knitting performance/installation conceived by Liz Collins. It happens the last day of the exhibit in June. Check out the Museum of Art & Design calendar for details.
Check out these two web-only magazines. I posted about NEET before, and Amour just launched this month. Of course both of these are from the UK. Anyone know any crafty DIY fashion zines produced in the US???
Preen is a new fashion mag that just launched and will be produced on a bi-monthly basis (that means once every two months, right?). So far, I'm into their aesthetic and like that it only costs $5.99. Because all of the other good magazines are $20. They seem to get that free spirited fashion enthusiast that's not so into all the "high fashion" glitter. After I get through it, I'll be sure to share some of the treasures I find among the pages. For now check out this short video intro they did...
The third issue of girly British mag lula is out! I know this is a magazine that has definitely been talked about among the designers at FP. The content is fashion mixed with beautiful whimsical fantasy and nostalgia. A magazine you'll want to book mark rather than tear out the pages...
It kind of amazes me when I take the time to actually read a magazine from cover to cover, and it becomes clear how connected everything is. Like in the interview with the designers from clothing line Lover, they talked about being inspired by Marianne Faithfull's biography. And then toward the back, there is an interview with Marianne Faithfull herself. How suddenly certain trends, interests, people, just emerge as important to a place in time...
If you are in the NYC area, I highly suggest making the trek to Brooklyn for Bust Magazine's Holiday Craftacular this Saturday. I found loads of great crafty gifts last year, and it's totally inspiring to see so many talented people selling their handmades.
Here's a picture of last year's crowd. It's a serious party with with music spun by DJs Dirty Jean, Amylulita, Lady Byrd, Peppermintwist, Ultra V, Mahssa, and Miss Modular plus free drinks and a raffle with great prizes. See you there!
Found these images on what you make it (see below entry) by artist Lisa Solomon. She makes these installations using hand crocheted doilies and detailed drawings. They look so intricate. Pretty amazing.
Lisa's work reminded me of some pieces we used for our Free People store fall display. The display team hand crocheted these enormous doilies from enormous yarn balls (you can see the yarn balls on the floor in the photo). The picture above is in the lobby of the FP home office.
Check out this "online art zine of sorts" called What You Make It. This is the second issue and is even better than the first. (The first issue introduced me to wardrobe remix, however) This issue covers some really inspiring artists and crafters and has a cool feature on holiday shopping. It also introduces a book called "By Hand" that looks especially interesting. Before I give it all away, see for yourself!
Mr. John Galliano seems to be the guest editor for the December/January issue of French Vogue. Hopefully this means a healthy dose of avant garde fashion fantasies to get us through the new year. And speaking of getting us through the new year, the issue also comes with a limited edition 2007 calendar (pictured above). I received this news via stylebubble. She also recommends December's British Vogue, it's 90th birthday issue, even for those that aren't usual Vogue readers. She'll tell you why...
Nylon's November issue features a section highlighting what's going on here in Philadelphia. As you may know, Philly is the city Free People calls home. So Nylon scouted some girls on the street to be part of their spread, and the three pictured all happen to be designers associated with FP. (Check Nylon's website soon. They have been posting all of their issues for free online!)
N.E.E.T. is grass roots creativity, fashion with passion, along with amazing illustrations, crafts, and vintage. The coolest thing about this internet-only mag is you can get your creative self involved. Check out the faqs page at the end to learn how you can contribute your own handmade wares, illustrations, fashion photography or you own article.
