another fp girl asked this the other day and a bunch of us looked it up – the results were pretty funny. some of our songs were pink floyd’s “another brick in the wall,” “up where we belong” by joe cocker & jennifer warner and “careless whisper” by wham :)
so tell me… what was the number one song when you were born?
i had never heard of angus & julia stone until last week, when fp jemma told me about them. i’m so glad she did because their music is beautiful and they also happen to have a new album coming out today called down the way! angus and julia are brother and sister and their music is as light and airy as these photos of them…listening to it feels like a bike ride on a summer day or dangling your legs off the end of a pier looking out at a sparkling lake. her voice has a similar quality to joanna newsom and his is its perfect complement – very soothing and understated. their music is simple and sweet, and a perfect soundtrack for spring and summer. their video for “mango tree” captures this essence to a t – watch:
i also love this collage from their deluxe edition album packaging that uses photos from their family albums. now listen to some of their songs below and tell me what you think!
music festival season is underway! sxsw was just the beginning…next up is coachella, followed by sasquatch, bonnaroo, lollapalooza, outside lands…phew. that’s a lot of festivals. but i love them, and i try to attend one every year. there is something so freeing about losing yourself to the music and dancing among a sea of people. if i could go back in time i would want to live in the sixties so i could go to woodstock and monterey pop…and there’s a spirit in the air at music festivals that feels so reminiscent of that time.
are you attending any music festivals this year? leave a comment and let me know! we may try to get to that one too…
zooey deschanel is probably one of the few actresses who has achieved a successful career in the music industry. she has a natural, sweet voice that could easily fool you into thinking you’re listening to an old record from the fifties – and it probably helps that she’s teamed with m. ward, who is insanely talented. i recently saw him with his other band, monsters of folk, and i kept finding myself in awe of his effortless guitar skills and smoky, hushed voice. he and zooey make a good pair…if their music had an aura, it would be golden.
zooey is so cute too… i love her vintage style. she & him’s volume two comes out today – take a listen to some of the songs below and let me know what you think!
if you’d never been to austin before and you were walking down the street and passed mrs. bea’s, you probably wouldn’t even notice it. you definitely wouldn’t think it’s one of the best venues to see a show during sxsw. but head around back and you’ll find an outdoor stage, dance floor and bar where no matter where you are you have an up close view of the band. plus music is always better outside in my opinion!
check out these amazing photos one of our fp girls shot at the no age show at mrs. bea’s during last year’s sxsw:
today’s featured sxsw band is also one of my current obsessions – local natives!
i heard the opening notes of the first song “wide eyes” and they had me hooked immediately…i’ve been listening to their album gorilla manor nonstop for a couple of weeks now and i love it from start to finish.
it’s full of beautiful harmonies and intricate arrangements and a sort of moody, haunting undertone that i always seem to be drawn to. i wasn’t surprised to learn they list the zombies, crosby stills & nash and animal collective as some of their influences.
they’ll be playing a couple of shows at sxsw this year, one of them in urban’s backlot.
take a listen to the first few songs from their album and let me know if you’re loving them as much as I am…
another fp girl sent me this video saying it reminded her of our tangerine dream web graphics – and i agree, with the bright colors and trippy effects. it’s the trailer for oddsac, a visual album by philadelphia video artist danny perez and animal collective.
the band has worked with perez before, and actually just debuted a live art installation with him this past weekend called “transverse temporal gyrus,” at the guggenheim in new york – it got mixed reviews but these photos look pretty cool:
oddsac premiered at sundance and screenings are taking place now in various cities throughout the us- go here for a full list – and you might even be lucky enough to see perez and animal collective there!
i picked today’s featured band for a few reasons- their new album came out today, they’re playing at SXSW, and they also happen to have a show in philly tomorrow night!
they are the morning benders, a san francisco band who make sunny melodic pop music reminiscent of the beach boys. the album, big echo, was produced by grizzly bear bassist chris taylor, who helped give the songs a sort of fuzzy, vinyl-like sound. i really like the song “excuses” – check it out below!
the morning benders have a few shows during sxsw – you can find the full list of shows on their myspace page, here. and if you’re in the philly area, you can check them out at johnny brenda’s tomorrow night!
well everyone, march is finally here- which means spring officially starts this month! i am so ready for warmth and sunshine and leaves and flowers…and in that spirit, i made a little mix of music that feels happy and springlike and is brightening my spirits a little bit. hope you like it!
the first music festival of the season is just a couple of weeks away! this year a couple of our fp girls heading down to austin for SXSW and we’re going to be bringing you the SXSW experience …fp style!
i thought for tunesday today i’d feature one of their must-see bands for this year, white denim! they saw this garage/experimental rock trio perform last year and loved them, so they can’t wait to check them out again this year. white denim is also a hometown favorite, being from austin. they’ll be playing this year at emo’s annex, thursday march 18 at 1:00am.
i just listened to their album “fits,” released in october of ’09, and was really impressed- and supposedly they put on a sick live show.
listen to a couple of their songs and let me know what you think!
