today’s featured sxsw band is also one of my current obsessions – local natives!

i heard the opening notes of the first song “wide eyes” and they had me hooked immediately…i’ve been listening to their album gorilla manor nonstop for a couple of weeks now and i love it from start to finish.
it’s full of beautiful harmonies and intricate arrangements and a sort of moody, haunting undertone that i always seem to be drawn to. i wasn’t surprised to learn they list the zombies, crosby stills & nash and animal collective as some of their influences.

they’ll be playing a couple of shows at sxsw this year, one of them in urban’s backlot.
take a listen to the first few songs from their album and let me know if you’re loving them as much as I am…

Post image for animal collective’s visual album

another fp girl sent me this video saying it reminded her of our tangerine dream web graphics – and i agree, with the bright colors and trippy effects. it’s the trailer for oddsac, a visual album by philadelphia video artist danny perez and animal collective.

the band has worked with perez before, and actually just debuted a live art installation with him this past weekend called “transverse temporal gyrus,” at the guggenheim in new york – it got mixed reviews but these photos look pretty cool:

oddsac premiered at sundance and screenings are taking place now in various cities throughout the us- go here for a full list – and you might even be lucky enough to see perez and animal collective there!

i picked today’s featured band for a few reasons- their new album came out today, they’re playing at SXSW, and they also happen to have a show in philly tomorrow night!

they are the morning benders, a san francisco band who make sunny melodic pop music reminiscent of the beach boys. the album, big echo, was produced by grizzly bear bassist chris taylor, who helped give the songs a sort of fuzzy, vinyl-like sound. i really like the song “excuses” – check it out below!

the morning benders have a few shows during sxsw – you can find the full list of shows on their myspace page, here. and if you’re in the philly area, you can check them out at johnny brenda’s tomorrow night!

Many thanks for getting some time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and adore understanding much more with this topic. If doable, as you acquire expertise, can you mind updating your blog with far more info? It’s extremely helpful to me come to think of that , i never considered it in that way before.

I really like the song. I"ll have to check out their new album!

Post image for tangerine dream

i am in love with the theme for our website right now – tangerine dream.

“a dreamy trippy notion, like walking on a rainbow…drops of sherbert color pops are drenched in a hazy daze that feels fresh and cool and ready for the sun.”

its time to ditch the winter blues and lighten up with shades of pink, aquamarine, and of course, tangerine …and capture the essence of a beautiful spring morning.

here are just a few of the many inspirational images…

hi luana! i asked our photographer, here's what he said: "I used an old 70's 5-image filter. It can just get very repetitive so you've got to use it sparingly. If you cant find the filter, try shooting through a kaleidoscope, different types of velum, or glass surfaces."

I love that photograph where her face is layered several times. How was that done, was she moving with a slow shutter speed or is it Photoshop?

the first music festival of the season is just a couple of weeks away! this year a couple of our fp girls heading down to austin for SXSW and we’re going to be bringing you the SXSW experience …fp style!

i thought for tunesday today i’d feature one of their must-see bands for this year, white denim! they saw this garage/experimental rock trio perform last year and loved them, so they can’t wait to check them out again this year. white denim is also a hometown favorite, being from austin.  they’ll be playing this year at emo’s annex, thursday march 18 at 1:00am.

i  just listened to their album “fits,” released in october of ’09, and was really impressed- and supposedly they put on a sick live show.

listen to a couple of their songs and let me know what you think!

Post image for i still miss you kurt.

news came out last week that universal studios is finally moving forward with a biopic about kurt cobain, just days before what would have been his 43rd birthday (this past saturday).

who do you think should play him?

Mary Taylor -Mar 04, 2010, 2:19PM
Hands down Joe Anderson. It was said earlier, but it can't be said enough. He was in Across The Universe and even did a movie called "The 27 Club" I most definitely think he can handle the intensity of the role, he looks and sounds identical to Kurt, it's almost scary. Michael Pitt played a roll similar to Kurt in Gus Van Sant's "Last Days." He doesn't look like Kurt but can handle dark characters better than any other actor I know, and he's not mainstream which would be key for this movie. You can't have someone with a status like Brad Pitt's playing Kurt Cobain or it will not tribute him the way he deserves. But my vote is for Joe Anderson. If he doesn't take the role, I don't know who else would.
chantel -Feb 25, 2010, 11:26PM
WOW, my heart sinks..that's a lovely picture of him. He was such an amazing artist. I don't know who should play him. Honestly no one compares.

this album isn’t exactly new but i just discovered it and i had to share! the phenomenal handclap band consists of eight core members from new york/brooklyn – it’s sort of a mix of blues,  electronic and soul, with a little bit of psychedelic rock – no two songs sound the same.

check out this video for the song “baby” – and tell me you aren’t singing it in your head all day!

so my favorite album of the year so far is without a doubt broken bells. take danger mouse (the grey album, gnarls barkley, black keys producer) and james mercer (the shins) and you’re bound to get something extraordinary. this album hooked me immediately…it doesn’t come out until march 9th but i was able to get a hold of it early and trust me its worth the wait! in the meantime, enjoy a couple of songs off the album and let me know what you think!!

Post image for fantasy luv spectacular

there’s a cool event taking place tonight at space 15 twenty in LA, the location of one of our newest free people stores.  they’re having a special “valentine’s fantasy luv spectacular” with a pop-up shop and a performance by sister act pearl harbor. really mellowed out, warm and fuzzy pop – perfect music as you browse for last minute gifts for your sweetie…

Post image for dance dance dance

fp jemma is snowed in at home today but she sent along this post about one of her favorite artists right now, lykke li!

Lykke Li is slamming my ear drums and has been for the last few months- I love her!
This little swedish Pixie fills me with delight everytime I see a picture of her, everytime I see her cute little dance moves and everytime i stumble across a raw, acoustic video of her performing. The latest being-coming from my addiction with La Blogotheque- her collaboration with Bon Iver on Dance, Dance, Dance, where they both jam around a fountain with tambourines.

I feel like the song “Everybody but me” is my anthem. She gives a dusting of glitter to my everyday, so i just wanted to show some love.

leighanne -Feb 12, 2010, 6:40AM
i played this last night just because you said too and i loved it, you cant help but dance along and jig like she does - shes such a mystical little person, her voice is insane, cant wait to play this when i vist my loved one *-*

Post image for bonnarooooooo

this year’s bonnaroo lineup is being announced today…starting at noon today, they began revealing one artist at a time every 5 minutes on their myspace page.  pretty annoying actually…anyway it is going on right now if you want to check it out here.  so far, among the performers they’ve announced are the avett brothers, weezer, phoenix, the xx, ok go, jay z, theivery corporation, jimmy cliff and the flaming lips performing “dark side of the moon” with stardeath and white dwarfs.

i know it’s not over yet but i’ll admit, with the exception of jimmy cliff (which is rad), i’m a little disappointed.  maybe because i was at the second bonnaroo when the headliners were neil young, widespread panic and the dead.  it seems like each year it gets a little more mainstream.  what do you guys think?

on a more positive note, i love this photo shoot by dan martensen that was taken at bonnaroo ’08 (i was there that year, too)! as i mentioned yesterday, martensen shot our new february catalog, and our team was very inspired by this photo shoot – i can see why!

Bonnaroo does get more and more Mainstream, but I think in that aspect lies a lot of appeal. Being able to say you saw SUCH famous artists is super exciting, especially when you wouldn't seem them alone or on a normal basis. Additionally, mainstream music is not invalid just because it's mainstream, there is a reason it's popular, because people like it. That being said, I am disappointed in the line-up, as I went last year and was excited about every band.
