a couple of people have recommended the tallest man on earth to me, but i only just recently started listening to his music. the tallest man on earth is swedish folk musician kristian mattson, who has one of those voices that doesn’t initially strike you as beautiful, but with the guitar and his songwriting he soon wins you over. he definitely brings to mind bob dylan, and i also hear a little nick drake influence in there as well.  what i love though is that it’s unlike anything i’ve heard in a long time. take a listen to some of his songs below and let me know what you think!

on a side note, every time his song “king of spain” comes on in the store (i work at the u-village location) i do a little dance of joy. haha

ah! i’ve been a huge fan of matsson’s for a long time now and he never ceases to amaze me. i had the pleasure of seeing him with a crowd of only 30 max… it was seriously one of the most mind blowing experiences i have ever had. his music is ridiculously beautiful. love love love him.

equestrian dreams

She rides like a frontier… lady like and romantic she aims for the sunset, the dusk glow casts a story over her Victorian ruffles.
Her silhouette is striking, riding pants, layered maxi skirts and leather waisted belts. She becomes a rider of romance with power in her eyes.

to get the shots for our current web theme, equestrian dreams, our team went to belmont stables in philadelphia, where a couple of our fp girls take riding lessons.  i asked one of them to tell me a little bit about why she loves riding horses and here’s what she had to say…

“I have been trying to find a hobby that I am really passionate about for years. When I was younger it was dancing, I took ballet for over 12 years, and since I’ve stopped- I haven’t really had ‘a thing’ that I do just for me, and I miss that. I’ve wanted to ride my whole life, my grandmother was a rider and always showed me pictures of her with her horses. Well, I’m 32 and I finally did it. It’s definitely like my little escape, I love going to the stables and grooming my horse and spending time forming relationships. It’s a beautiful feeling to ride a horse, building up the immense trust and getting into that perfect rhythm with such a big animal. When I am riding I am not thinking of anything else, my mind is clear and it is just me and the horse. I also really love the natural, raw almost historic feeling of riding a horse. It’s something humans have been doing for centuries and it feels pretty awesome to be a part of that.”

the unbearable lightness of being – final post

“i used to admire believers”, tomas continued. “i thought they had an odd transcendental way of perceiving things which was closed to me. like clairvoyants, you might say.”

“it is completely selfless love: tereza did not want anything of karenin; she did not ever ask him to love her back. nor has she ever asked herself the questions that plague human couples: does he love me? does he love anybody more than me? does he love me more than i love him? perhaps all the questions we ask of love, to measure, test, probe, and save it, have the additional effect of cutting it short. perhaps the reason we are unable to love is that we yearn to be loved, that is, we demand something (love) from our partner instead of delivering ourselves to him demand-free and asking for nothing but his company.”

“what about the country…we’d be alone there. the people there are different. and we’d be getting back to nature.  nature is the same as it always was.”

“missions are stupid, tereza. i have no mission, no one has. and it’s a a terrific relief to realize you’re free, free of all missions.”

“we all need someone to look at us. we can be divided into four categories according to the kind of look we wish to live under:”

Diltz Grace Slick the unbearable lightness of being final post

“the first category longs for the look of an infinite number of anonymous eyes, in other words, for the look of the public. that is the case with the german singer, the american actress.”

“the second category is made up of people who have a vital need to be looked at by many known eyes.  they are the tireless hosts of cocktail parties and dinners.”

“then there is the third category, the category of people who need to be constantly before the eyes of the person they love.”

and finally there is the fourth category, the rarest, the category of people who live in the imaginary eyes of those who are not present.  they are the dreamers.”

i really enjoyed reading this book – i think kundera has a beautiful way with words and some great insight into the human pursuit of happiness and that ever elusive “lightness.” those of you who read it, what did you think?

the film is wonderful as well :)

Just finished the book in two sittings, absolutely loved it. So many memorable quotes and the story telling was incredible. I, too, had a deep appreciation for the chapter on animals. Kundera took the words right out of my mouth. The last chapter also had me crying! Thank you so much for recommeding this book, I look forward to what you suggest next!!

i love gracie slick. that shot from woodstock is one of my favorites. i read the book along with you and i feel like it’s one of those books that change your perspective on life. i even suggested it to my yoga class…passing down the torch.

november catalog chapter three: the sketchbook

New Picture november catalog chapter three: the sketchbook

“beauty begins when pencil hits paper… the sketch comes alive with swatches and trims, transformed into an enchanting ensemble. the muse is awakened. each design idea is created with the beauty of the free people girl in mind. she’s special, one of a kind.”

this is my favorite section of the book. i love the simplicity of the layout – studio shots against a white backdrop, highlighted by sketches of the designs and swatches of fabrics to draw you in.  i adore the little sketches – i wish i could draw like this!

this section features models suvi koponen and jessica mau, who were photographed in a new york studio by the amazing dan martensen – he also shot our february 2010 catalog in california and our april 2010 catalog in morocco.  these are two of my favorite shots in the entire book:

his portraits always manage to exude so much grace and simple beauty.  here are some from his portfolio that i love:
