Post image for dark fairy swap photos

Our Dark Fairy Swap flickr group is filling up with photos of the amazing crafts you all made! Check out the photos, read about the swappers in the discussion page (come on swappers, introduce yourself!) and leave the crafters some comments. And FYI, if you have a flickr account, or want to set one up, you can view ALL of the photos in the group. If you don’t have an account, you can only see a limited #. Not sure why…
I’ll be featuring some individual photos from the swap in the sidebar to the right. So check back to see yours featured!

modern needlepoint

Post image for modern needlepoint

Recently I met the designer of AMH Design. She does these super cute, portable needlepoint kits and the end result is functional as well. Here’s a bit from Amy’s bio…
Amy Holbrook, the founder of AMH Design, discovered needlepoint when it was recommended to her as a great stress relief activity. After living in Italy for several years where her most stressful daily event was trying to navigate Rome’s traffic on her Vespa, Amy returned to New York and enrolled at Columbia Business School where she soon became a stressed out, sleep deprived MBA student looking for a job. To combat the stress of her grueling schedule, Amy started needlepointing. She was instantly hooked by this craft that kept her hands busy, calmed her nerves and put her into a meditation-like state.
After stitching numerous floral motifs, eyeglass cases and pillows with cute sayings, Amy decided that if she was going to continue stitching, she wanted to be making something that would fit in with her urban lifestyle and home decor. She searched needlepoint shops and online stores and couldn’t find what she was looking for. So, she decided to design them herself- AMH Design was born shortly after graduating from Columbia.
Check out her site for fun ways to craft and customize your own journals and photo albums!

catalog artwork

Post image for catalog artwork

tart6.jpg
The art for our November catalog is mostly inspired by the same fabrics and trims that were inspiration for the clothing. The creative team used the fabrics as a starting point and painted them in watercolors and ink. Once they started painting, they developed a looser approach to the representation, and resulted in the beautiful backgrounds you see throughout the catalog.

melissa -Nov 08, 2007, 5:34PM
gorgeous use of the watercolors! i love the way these designs look (:
Teresa Kwon -Nov 07, 2007, 8:18PM
I just stumbled on these watercolor pieces. The looseness and the intricacy of the color spots and the line is amazing. Tight vs. loose, a great balance of art.

Post image for november catalog is here!

The November catalog is here, so check those mailboxes. You can view it online and be sure to check out the “behind the scenes” video from our trip to India.
Our assistant creative director wrote a little about the inspiration our designers found in Tibet and their experience with the catalog…
“After our designers’ visit to tibet last year, they returned with stories of how warm and accepting the people were…doub and maryellen were even taken into a shop and dressed to the nines in native garb as a crowd of onlookers watched. We wanted to share with our fp community the impact this culture had on those 2 designers. Their dress code may not be intentional, but we found it so beautiful and in its genuinity, we hoped to express those sincerest of ideals in our book. And therefore travelled to a tibetan village in india, and while there, we met and made many friends who were just willing to share their lives and experiences with us for a few days.
There’s probably more I could and should convey, but it was so truly magical for myself and our team. Funnily enough, I was reading through the journal I kept there, and came across the story of the family who made us butter tea for the first time…”Experiences like this make my life worthwhile, and restore validity in humanity.”
See a few more photos we took on location below…

Post image for november catalog coming!

Our November catalog drops this week! Our inspiration was based on Tibet. Our crew travelled to northern India in the Himalayas of Leh-Ladakh (sometimes called “little Tibet”) for this book. It was quite an experience for our team. The altitude was one thing they had to get used to, at one point being 18,000 feet above sea level. They found they had to move really slowly, which is difficult on a photo shoot, especially when some of the best shots usually come spur of the moment or at the last minute.

They found the people of the town to be extremely hospitable and welcoming. One family even made the girls cups of yak butter tea. yum. These photos are some the “behind the scenes” shots. Enjoy!

Hi, thanks for the great quality of your blog, each time i come here, i'm amazed.
Thimblescratch -Dec 04, 2007, 6:38PM
When I saw the Tibet catalogue and the clear inspiration for the clothing, it was very inspiring and beautiful. Some of the models looked like they did not enjoy being there but the beauty of the area and the environment spoke volumes and I must say it did complement the clothes beautifully. The most beautiful picture of all was the Tibetan man wearing a scarf. The model looks almost cringing but I won't let that detract from the image. The man shines so beautifully, so radiantly, I was taken aback in amazement. The photo of him really struck a chord with me, and brought tears of joy to my eyes. I think that is the most beautiful page in the book. Every time I look at his smile, I feel completely inspired by his beauty. It makes me wish you would have included some information about the plight Tibet's people are facing. In this country awareness is lacking and in fact UNawareness is a disease. The beauty of Tibet in the pages of your catalogue would have been even more inspired if you would enlighten the casual viewer of the seriousness the country is facing. The comments received here are showing the desperation of those who are aware with Tibet's plight. In any case, thank you for a deep, gorgeous, and thought-provoking collection. Peace, Thimblescratch Handmade Clothing

I am so jealous that I'm not a part of your company yet! My mom and I used to make houses like this every year when I was little. We used poundcake mostly so it wasn't as easy for me to break when I really got into the decorating! :) Such a cute idea!
