well everyone…the time has come for us to choose our next book for the free people book club! this time around we want you to vote…we picked six books from the list of suggestions we got from our readers, a few of which many of you recommended. check them out, and vote for your top choice!
it looks like bread, but its actually knedliky, czech bread dumplings that are one of the country’s most popular side dishes…so to go along with our prague theme, i thought i’d share a recipe for it with you! they’re usually served with pork and sauerkraut, but they’re probably good with just about anything. wanna make some? here’s how:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon sugar
3 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 cups milk, or as needed
4 cups dry white bread cubes
- In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and sugar. Make a well in the center, and pour in the eggs and 1 cup of milk. Stir to blend, and add enough additional milk to make a moist battery dough, not like pancake batter. Use a sturdy wooden spoon to beat the dough at least 200 strokes, rolling it over and over in the bowl until smooth and an occasional bubble appears on the surface. Add the dry white bread cubes, and stir into the dough until they disappear.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Place the dough onto a cheesecloth or white cotton cloth, and form into a loaf shape. Wrap the cloth around the loaf, and tie the ends.
- Place the loaf into the boiling water, and cook for 45 minutes, turning the loaf over about half way through. Remove from the water, unwrap, and cover with a tea towel. Let stand for 10 minutes and then slice.
you may remember this post i did a while back about the incredibly talented photographer jennilee marigomen. well she sent me an email last week about an upcoming show she’s curating (more info on that below), and i decided to ask her some questions for the blog!
what is your favorite thing to photograph?
“strange things that don’t really belong, everyday phenomena.”
do you carry a camera around with you at all times?
“yes - if i don’t have an SLR with me, i usually have a yashica T4 in my bag.”
What inspires you on a daily basis?
“negative space, nature, music and light. and tumblr. :)”
if you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want with you?
“a teepee, canoe, and a camera.”
how did you get involved with 01 magazine?
“i met vancouver based stylist redia soltis in 2008 while we worked on a photo shoot for clothing designers beth richards and brian mendoza. we kept in contact and a few months later, redia and artist nathalee paolinelli approached me about working on 01 magazine. we took a trip to portland to work on our first issue and hit it off instantly. we are working on our fifth issue right now and feel very lucky to have such a great team and awesome people wanting to collaborate and contribute.”
if you weren’t a photographer, what would you do?
“i currently work in the creative marketing department for a canadian clothing distributor, and really love it. i think that working on photography focused art events for a living would be so amazing too.”
what is your theme song?
“it’s hard to decide.. but “smog in cities” by black moth super rainbow has been my ringtone for the past year.”
if you could go anywhere in the world, free of cost, where would you go?
“iceland’s natural landscape, filled with hot springs, geysers and glaciers are so magnificent and transcendent – the photos i’ve seen look unreal. i think that iceland encompasses everything that i love to photograph. i would be thrilled to see it in person someday.”
if you could spend a day with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?
“mark borthwick or andy goldsworthy.”
here’s just a small sample of jennilee’s amazing work:
i definitely recommend checking out more of her work on her website.
the show that she curated is called stream, a photograph projection show that will take place in two locations (baltimore’s pent house gallery and l.a.’s space 15 twenty) on january 22nd at 8pm. for more info click here.
thanks so much jennilee!!
I’m almost done with Winter, aren’t you? I’m bored of the dull weather and more importantly the DULL colour scheme in my wardrobe!
So I’ve decided. Note to self- that from now on I’m going to introduce a little bit of ditsy floral into the mass of Grays, Blacks, and Browns that are over consuming my rails. I thought maybe it will work as a “perk me up” and contribute to the excitment of spring that follows. You never know.
This morning I created myself a little capsule wardrobe from the New In items on the web. So many beautiful items have been launched this week!
All that’s left to do now is count the days until Spring.
philly is getting a new farmer’s market, and it looks like a good one!
the weekly market starts tomorrow will take place every saturday at the piazza at schmidts between 10am and 2pm. supposedly this will be the largest farmer’s market in the city, with a huge variety of seasonal vegetables, fruits and meat from more than 20 farmers. plus each vendor meets one or more of the following criteria: local, sustainably grown, ethically raised, free range, hormone free, pesticide free, organic, raw and/or grass fed. nice!
happy friday everyone! i have a special treat for you today- our image team put together an awesome calendar for everyone at the home office, and we’re going to offer it to you all as a download each month!
since we’re already halfway through the month, today you get both january and february- just click on the images to go to our flickr page, download the large size, and enjoy :)
