my greatest loves are my yorkie, art, traveling, swings, anything vintage, and all my nieces and nephews. i also love to bake and am always looking for new things to try – dessert is my weakness! on weekends i love to go out and explore the suburbs of philadelphia looking for new places to eat, shop, or just to take a nice walk. at night you will most likely find me downtown philadelphia at a bar where my boyfriend is DJ-ing having drinks with friends!

love like there’s no tomorrow.

if you could spend a day with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?
my best friend in oslo, who i haven’t seen in a long time.

real fp girls – part 1

as mentioned, our may catalog features real girls who work for free people.  this month on the blog we’ll be profiling these lovely ladies and learning more about their life and style… starting with our web merchandiser!

i am inspired daily by the people i surround myself with. i have some very special people in my life, whether they are best friends, family members or work acquaintances, they’re all here for a reason.

i LOVE to travel… the pure, clean, crisp air of the colorado mountains gives me a feeling i can’t describe. a close second would have to be the redwood national forest in california- a magical place for sure! i also love going out to eat and trying new restaurants, and cooking.  i’m just starting to teach myself, so i started a cooking club dinner night with my girlfriends. some of my favorite things are live music, dancing at concerts with friends, pilates, riding my bike and hikes with my new pup… and flipping through fashion mags, which thankfully has become part of my job!  on a typical day off i sleep in with my dog, cat and boyfriend – yes,all in one bed – make banana pancakes and take a walk to the farmer’s market, then maybe stroll around the city with a girlfriend, checking out shops and getting manicures.  then out to see a show with some friends at night or dinner with my boyfriend!

rebecca1

i love lots of kinds of music – everything  from biggie smalls to hank williams jr.  some of my all-time favorites: the disco biscuits (i have followed them on tour for the past 10 years… so yeah, i guess i like them) phish- they changed my life, grateful dead, pink floyd, radiohead, muse, zeppelin, the doors, jay z, beck, nirvana…

and some newer favorites: phoenix, gorillaz, MGMT, hot chip, passion pit

my style…

1. genetic kelly patched flare; 2. easy corset slip; 3. printed smocked bandeau; 4. charli clogs.

Retro Africa Inspired – Clash that print

Our creative theme for May is retro Africa and the styling theme is (no surprise for this African theme) clashing prints.

I understand this could be a scary theme for some but you need to have fun with this one.

Think boldness and be eclectic. I adore Abbey Lees style she mixes textures, bold prints and crazy accessories into her outfits and looks awesome.

She’s a great inspiration!!!

Whenever I think of bold prints and clashing colour and textures I turn straight to Marc Jacobs; one of my favorite designers.

His Marc by Marc Jacobs ads encourage this trend to a ‘T’.  I love how there’s no rules. It doesn’t matter if the colours bounce off each other or the accessories don’t quite go. It’s all about the fun!

How we like to work this trend

Bold fabrics with graphic T’s (as above). Aztec patterns with ditsy floral. You need bold accessories so the prints don’t take over the whole look. Think wooden beads and patterned belts.

We’re really into ankle socks at the moment and I love them with clogs and wedges just remember it has to be in a contrast print thought to the rest of your outfit.

Our special shoots for this month  make me want to listen to M.I.A really loud and play dress up!

may catalog drops tomorrow!

first friday in philadelphia

ff28

i have a love/hate relationship with first fridays in philly.  i live in old city…so when i leave my place to go out on the first friday of the month i have to wade through the sea of people blocking the sidewalks, and every place i go is packed.  but once it gets nice out, i find myself warming up- literally – to the idea.  the streets of old city come alive with all types of creative folk who line the sidewalks with their art, craft and music.  i’ll wander around perusing the treasures, stopping every once in a while to talk with sellers, all the while soaking in the energy that is first friday in philadelphia.

here are some photos from yesterday evening…

fri

and i ran into some fp girls!

the great escape…

fridays are always a little tough at work this time of year, with it being so nice out and so close to the weekend, so what better way to help pass the day than a lunchtime concert? we snuck out today at noon, hopped in the car and made the quick drive over to WXPN for the local natives free at noon show – something the station does every friday at world café live.  we were instantly transported from work mode to music mode as we took our seats up in the mezzanine level (thanks xpn!) and let the tunes take over.  this band blows me away- they sound better live than on the album and the songs “airplanes” and “who knows who cares” gave me chills. i knew “sun hands” would be amazing live as well and it sure was- they put everything into that song no matter how many times they have played it. this was my first time seeing them live and it definitely will not be the last- i have already got tickets to see them at first unitarian church in philly this august!
