one of the awesome things we have at the free people is yoga! if you don’t do yoga…i highly recommend you try. it’s an amazing workout, and you feel incredible afterwards - body and mind. paige chapman, our in house yoga instructor, shared her experiences with me, including an amazing retreat in mozambique, africa. read on to learn more about paige and the style of yoga she teaches. she also teaches at yoga child on 9th & south in philly.
when did you start doing yoga?
"i started doing yoga in college when i was about 19. i was in the dance company at school and thought it would be a good way to compliment my dance training as well as keep me in shape during the summer."
why did you decide to be a yoga instructor?
"i fell in love with yoga immediately. since i started, it has brought me so much joy, peace, and an overall feeling of well being. after graduating college, i moved to NY where there was a very well respected teacher training that i could do on the weekends while working full time. it took me eight grueling months - eight intensive three day weekends a month with yoga classes and assignments in between. i joke that i never was more stressed out than during my yoga training, but it was by far one of the best decisions that i ever made. i didn't actually start teaching full time until i moved back to philadelphia about three years ago."
your classes are a blend of hatha and vinyasa…can you explain what that means?
"hatha is probably the most recognized style of yoga in america and is what was typically practiced as yoga started becoming popular here in the 60s. i like to think of it as a very classic form of yoga before we got into all kinds of crazy styles, the use of heat, etc. although still challenging, it's not overwhelming to beginning students and i like the fact that its slower pace allows for concentrating on form and body alignment - rather than just rushing through the poses which can often lead to injuries. vinyasa is more of a flow style, linking the asanas (poses) together with breath and quicker transitions. It gets the heart rate up and therefore brings more of a workout factor to the mat. i like teaching a combination of both so that you feel like you really got the body moving, but there is still the quality of being mindful about your practice. when all is said and done, yoga was created to ready the mind for meditation. i want my students to feel as rejuvenated, relaxed, and as peaceful as possible when they walk out of class."
i read that you recently taught a retreat in mozambique, africa…what was that like?
"the retreat in mozambique was absolutely incredible. a friend of mine whom i got certified to teach with in new york, married a south african, and set up a yoga studio in johannesburg (http://www.yogawarrior.co.za/). she invited me to teach the retreat with her at a magnificent eco resort on a completely undeveloped coastline in mozambique (http://www.pontamamoli.com/index.html). you sleep in wooden bungalows with monkeys jumping on your roof, swim with wild dolphins in the ocean, go whale watching, horse back ride, watch elephants in the distant reserve, and eat local organic food. the combination of the natural serenity of that location along with teaching yoga was quite an extraordinary experience."
what is your favorite place you’ve travelled to as a yoga instructor?
"africa was hands down the most fantastic and exotic place that I've traveled as a yoga teacher. it's going to be hard to top, but i'm going to try!"
what inspires you on a daily basis?
"that's such a good question for us all to answer. i would say being in nature (even if you're in the city - it could be watching the leaves change), kindness from friends and better yet - strangers, and doing what i love to do."
why do you think more people should incorporate yoga into their exercise routine?
"bottom line, it just makes you feel so good! our daily routines can be intensely stressful and sometimes we don't even know how much tension we walk around with. over time, it takes a toll. whether you're a beginner student that's really tight and stiff or an advanced student that can do all kinds of fancy poses, yoga brings the same benefits: it calms the mind, makes us conscious of our breath, eases tension, brings awareness to the way we hold the body when we're out in the world, and perhaps allows us to become more mindful - opening our hearts to what's happening in our lives just a little bit more."
thank you, paige! i don't know about you all, but i want to go on the africa retreat...it sounds unreal...
you might remember back in our august catalog, we featured animals from the philadelphia animal welfare society (P.A.W.S.) in several of the photos. well, one of our facebook fans, rachel, saw this and told us about a really amazing project that she was working on as her bfa thesis.
read on to hear more about rachel’s project and see some of her beautiful photos of the absolutely adorable animals…and tell me it doesn’t make you want to go adopt one!
chewie
what inspired you to do start the 4 to 5 million project?
from an early age i grew up aware that there was a serious problem pertaining to the overpopulation of pets in the US. this project stemmed from a passionate desire to communicate my concerns and love for these animals and while doing so, use photography to help inform the public about this heartbreaking and serious problem.
suzy q
what does 4 to 5 million mean?
every year approximately four to five million companion animals are euthanized. that amounts to 64% of all shelter animals around the country. the fact of the matter is, there are just too many pets and not enough homes.
rosie & sparky
how successful has the project been so far?
the project was extremely successful. it gained a lot of press for the shelters as well as for the specific dogs i featured in my photographs. the majority of which i have since been informed have found happy and loving homes. it also has provided people with new knowledge on this issue and with a variety of simple things that they can do to help.
taylor
who are your heroes?
the heroes who have had the greatest influence on who i am today are my parents. my father, a veterinarian and my mother, an artist, have too obviously, played a part on what i see through my lens.
zerbina
do you have a pet?
i have many pets, always have, always will, all of which were rescues! my house currently is home to two rescue chihuahua mixes and a terrier mix named mickey, as well as two cats, a tuxedo named tux and a calico, feather.
bocephus
what is your first memory of free people?
i first heard of free people when a model who participated in my project, saw your post about philly P.A.W.S. your plan to photograph the shelter animals with models was so similar to what i was doing that she passed on the video post to me. i admire that there are other people out there who are trying to do their part in helping spread the word about this problem. thank you free people!
Check out rachel’s website and blog to find out more about the project and see which animals have found happy homes thanks to rachel’s work!
an old friend of mine is doing something really cool…
kael robinson is the founder of brazilets, a company that brings bracelets based on a 200-year-old tradition in brazil to countries all over the world. for years the bracelets have been worn throughout latin america, where it was believed that when the knots come undone and the bracelet falls off, your wishes will come true.
not only are the bracelets super cute (and they come in lots of fun colors), but 20% of all proceeds for selling the bracelets goes towards plant a billion trees, the nature conservancy’s campaign to restore the atlantic forest of brazil.
kael was nice enough to answer some questions for the fp blog.
where are you from?
i am from bryn mawr, pennsylvania.
when did you start brazilets?
i launched brazilets in august of 2008 and i launched live brazilian in august of 2009.
what inspired you to start the company?
i was inspired to start brazilets when I was given a brazilet as a gift. i made my three wishes on the braclelet and wore the bracelet for about 9 months until it fell off. when my ruby brazilet fell off in one month all three of my wishes came true. i thought if this can help me why not start selling brazilets to help other people around the world. so, i slowly started importing these bracelets from brazil, i went to brazil and met with manufacturers and went to the place where they originated, bahia brazil, and learned the history and found how amazing the culture is and the tradition of this 200-year-old tradition. i also wanted to donate back to brazil by preserving the amazon rainforest. so, i chose to donate a portion of our proceeds to plantabillion.com. since, then we have grown to have three distributors world wide and we have helped thousands of people have their wishes come true.
how successful have you been in your goal of protecting the amazon?
we have planted thousands of trees in the amazon and are trying to reach a goal of 1,000,000 by 2011.
what is the one article of clothing you can’t live without (besides brazilets!)?
i would have to say the one articles of clothing i can not live without are my sweatshirts! i love being comfortable and whether it is a worn old sweatshirt from high school or a new nice one that is a little dressier i can not live without it.
today is our visual display intern julie's last day...
during her stay, she worked on developing some holiday in-store displays! here's a sneak peek of what you may see...
and she took the time to write this little note, which i'll transcribe for you in a sec.
"hi, my name is julie and i have been working with the free people visual team since june. today is my last day and i have had so much fun here! my favorite part of my internship was helping to make prototypes for upcoming displays. also being able to witness how creative and hard-working everyone is has been really exciting. one thing i will take with me is to keep working hard and let others inspire you and that is will impact the quality of your work. thanks for having me, free people family! thanks!"
some more touching stories from merrie, re: her travels in india...
"these are some pics we took last monday while visiting a school on 'baas,' a small village outside delhi.
the school was created 2 years ago in an area where the children have no access to a good education. its founder was the naval attache for the british high commission in india years ago, who ended up staying in india with his wife. together, they built an amazing home which they have opened as a guesthouse (bed and breakfast) for tourists.
it was fascinating to hear his stories of what he has been through with the indian government and the villagers while trying to help the children, but he perserveres, undaunted...amazing 'chap."
these pics are from the morning assembly they were having...all the children lined up singing songs and dancing with their music teacher ("mary had a little lamb," etc.).
when i popped my head in to take a peek, all the children stood up, unprompted by their teacher, and greeted me with "good morning madame". very sweet.
martin offers internships to english-speaking students to expose the children to other accents, etc. when we were there, a young girl from britian was just finishing up her month spent with the children. it was very emotional for her to leave, as the children performed their songs for her farewell..."
we've had 7 interns with us at the home office this summer...most of them are heading back to school now.
allie worked on our planning team. see below...she learned so much while she was here!
things i have learned this summer:
• contrary to my suspicions, ap physics actually DOES come in handy in the real world. understanding “velocity” is crucial to becoming an accomplished planner or allocator.
• WTF does not stand for “what the ****!”…it stands for We The Free
• i have learned to proficiently read without vowels. for example, “hey jamie. how are you allocating that L/S SLD VNK XTRM BTTNDWN MNSWR B/D PCKT TNK? i really like it”
• planners like numbers so much that they have made a numerical equivalent for almost every word used in the retail world.
• IT is your best friend
• ProClarity is your worst
• make mistakes, it's how you learn. however, make the same mistake twice, shame on you.
• be open to new opportunities. don’t turn your nose up at something until you are fully educated about it.
• incorporate design into all aspects of your life. be creative, be influential, and let yourself be open to influence.
• have energy and stay inspired.
• never settle for anything less than your dream job because…
• success and happiness are interchangeable.
i got an email this weekend from one of our creative directors, merrie. she spends a lot of time in india, and shared this story with me about a little boy she befriended:
"this little boy's name is anshu.
his family lives on the grounds of our friend kundan's office and his father is the gardener.
kundan has developed a soft spot for him as he's grown up because he is so 'street smart'. he loves hanging with the big guys and doing what they do.
so, kundan decided to send him to a school that teaches english, which is the ticket to a better life in india. the school started only a few weeks ago, and we don't know if the family will see the value of a good education over the years to come, but we are trying...hopefully it's the start of something bigger.
i figured out no one had ever taught him his colors, so now everyday after 'tutions' he stops by our office and sorts my colors with me. (i work on my hindi, and he works on both hindi and english)."
One of our Facebook friends, Mia, spent the summer on a beautiful farm in Iowa. She and her father took lots of really pretty photos of her on the farm, modeling Free People clothes! She was kind enough to share the pictures with us, check them out!

I've been really into this blog Artist Quote of the Day. The quotes are typically from visual artists, and the entries feature images of their work and some brief brographical information. But today was Michael.
I am crazy over this gorgeous editorial featuring Emma Watson in the July issue of Teen Vogue. The rich colors and luscious materials are doing me in! Bring on the tea cup skirts please!
I love paperdolls, so as you might expect, I love these fun fashion paperdolls! I Love Mel has created paperdolls of supermodels Agyness Deyn and Kate Moss, as well as one of British pop-star Cheryl Cole. So fun! You can get a better look at the paperdolls here, and buy one if you feel so inclined. If that's not enough Kate Moss for you, they also have Kate Moss coloring books!
Ever since Lark About posted a few shots of British supermodel Jean Shrimpton the other day, I have been on a kick, collecting images of her! They're great old fashion photos, and she has such a classic look! Love!
Meet our friend Brittaney! (And her fiancé Adam!)
Brittaney resides in Bellingham, Washington, and is one of the star item reviewers on our website! She reviews using the nickname mushroommoon, and is a total Free People girl, who loves to create and be outside!

One of our designers brought the picture below to my attention - it's so fun to see people out and about wearing FP! It came from a Perez Hilton post about Kate's new brunette hairdo - but check out her shirt! It's our Printed Dreamweaver Tank in Purple Sun!
Ryanne, who designed the tank, was really psyched! And what's extra cute is that she happens to be wearing that very tank, in that color, today! So random!
Here she is being happy and cute below!
Due in part to her fascination with the stage shows she saw as a girl in which the animals would come on stage with little outfits on, designer Hildegard Bergbauer, who usually designs for women, has started making Dirndl dresses for horses! The horse looks so cute in her dress! Hee hee! Check out Oddly Enough Blog for more.

What would the name of your band be and what genre? What instrument do you play in this band?
I have an astonishing lack of musical talent. It is much more likely that I would join a traveling circus.
Okay so this is interesting - the video below captures police in Denmark hugging helmet-less cyclists and giving them helmets. I know it's probably just a propaganda thing, but do you guys know anything about this? Even if it is a stunt for good press, it's really cute to see. Good effort!
For more discussion of this little topic, see here.
These amazing footprints worn into the wood are real! Buddhist monk Hua Chi has been praying in the same spot each day (many, many times a day) for over 20 years at his temple in Tongren, China. Hua Chi is 70 years old now, and according to this article, his footprints inspire the younger monks at the temple. “Every day I come here and every day I look at the piece of wood, and it has inspired me to continue to make the footprints myself,” Genden Darji, a 29 year-old monk in the monastery, notes.
So awesome!
I am so inspired by this project Color Me Katie created! She and her boyfriend traced themselves in various positions on black paper, cut them out and taped them up around Brooklyn! Then they waited and photographed people passing by when they matched with the shadows. What fun! Check out her blog here!
I know many of you may have already seen this video, but since I posted earlier today about the Hindu holiday Holi, I couldn't resist posting this old video we have of two of our designers enjoying Holi at one of our factories in India. They happened to be there working during the festival that year, and had a blast celebrating with everyone! It looks like so much fun!
These are from Boston.com's cool photo blog, The Big Picture. They're shots of the huge Hindu fesitival Holi, which is celebrated by, among other things, throwing colored power and water on one another! The colors are so gorgeous, and it looks like so much fun! Very spring! See more here!

Meet our latest featured Facebook friend - Samantha!
Samantha came to our attention after she posted some amazing photos that she took on her grandparents farm in North Carolina, in which she models her Pointillism Dress with the Diamond Crochet Halter Bralette. She took all the pictures herself with a timer, and had to run to get in the spot she wanted to be! They look great though! Samantha was kind enough to share the pictures with us and with you, and they are posted down below...
We also asked Samantha a few profile-type questions, just for fun! You might be surprised to learn that she is not a full time photographer, but actually a Geodetic Surveyor for an aerial mapping company. How cool is that?!
Where do you live?
Anchorage, Alaska
What do you do?
Haha, well, thats hard to explain! I'm a geodetic surveyor for an aerial mapping company. Basically, I take various data and turn them into something useful and cool to look at. I work in a field with a lot of big, gruff men so it's a bit strange for everyone that I'm this tiny girl. I don't fit the stereotype at all!
What draws you to the Free People style?
I love the patterns and designs. I really love the farmer'sdaughter collection! The styles are carefree, but well thought out. It's about loving what you put on and feeling great in it. Free People brings out the girly side of me! As a college student I wasn't concerned with what I wore and now I'm trying to break the habit of jeans and a sweatshirt everyday. I want to wear cute dresses and boots and dress them up with random pieces of jewelry!
What is your favorite article of Free People clothing?
Well, the dress in the photos is definitely my favorite- I immediately fell in love! But being in Alaska I won't get to wear it as much. :(
I wear Free People jeans nearly every day (they fit so well) as well as my navy retro puff jacket. They are my faithful standbys! I wish I could replace my whole closet, because FP style fits so well with my personality and the style of clothes I would make if I could make them myself.
Do you have any pets?
I have two tabby cats: Lucy is 3 years old and I recently got her a playmate Thomas who is 7 months (and already as big as Lucy!) I rescued Lucy from a shelter and Thomas from a foster mom. Lucy is such a trouble maker! Her favorite thing to play with are hairbands, but you have to watch her or she'll eat them. She also greatly enjoys dragging my clothes out to the food dish. I named Thomas that because we have always had orange tabby cats named Tom in my family. They were all huge and very affectionate - which he is turning out to be!
What inspires you?
I gather inspiration from a lot of things: traveling and learning, the creativity/ideas of others (I have a serious addiction to home decorating magazines), rummaging through my grandparents place for old items (I found an awesome collection of vintage buttons), and of course Free People- I find the photography as well as the clothes inspiring!
What do you do in your spare time?
In the winter time? Hibernate! The rest of the time I like fishing, camping, sea kayaking, and beach combing.
What do you like best about where you live?
Alaska is gorgeous and there is so much to do in the summertime! Summers are even better here because we get about 20 hours of daylight. In the winter the northern lights are out and they are always spectacular! Everyone should make a trip at some point in their lives to get up here- I've not met one person who didn't love it.
What do you like best about springtime?
The whole world is waking up. A few weeks ago the finches showed up at the bird feeder for the first time since winter started. I was just as excited as the cats! You can feel the energy and excitement of longer days, warmer weather, summer activities- it's time to come out of hibernation!
Hooray! Thank you Samantha! This was fun!

This striking young 8 year old is Arlo Weiner, the son of Matt Weiner, producer of The Sopranos and Mad Men. He is so cool! Arlo has been creating his own looks since the age of 3, when he asked his parents to get him a top hat. GQ has an awesome little article about him that I bet you'll like, and they have a slideshow featuring some of Arlo's favorite outfits, which is where I got the pictures above. Definitely worth checking out!

As someone who really enjoys watching people, this video just delights me! On a vacation in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan, some people put their camera on the conveyor belt at a local sushi restaurant. I love watching everyone's reactions as they notice (or don't notice) the camera rolling by! It's like a little seven minute vacation...
Check out this work by 10 year old graffiti artist Solveig. I love it!
That fresh tat is also by Solveig! Some guy had seen a lot of her work around and really liked it, so he requested a tattoo! I'm so impressed! There's a little picture article about her on Telegraph UK, and it has a little bit more information about her in the blurbs. I couldn't figure out where she's from, though I'm sure it's in there somewhere. Whatever, she's awesome! Make sure to have a look at Solveig's Flickr too, she has a ton of terrific pictures!

The upcoming Valentine's Day in mind, what would be your perfect date?
Being a tour guide and a waitress, I am always catering to someone else. While I love taking care of others, I would enjoy letting someone take care of me for a change! I would love a catered dinner on the beach with my husband, where we can talk and laugh without worry!
Thank you so much for sharing all this with us Cristina! It's been a pleasure! Plus, now I know what a skink is!
And of course, thank you so much for all your feedback and reviews! ;) We have appreciated them time and time again!

Today the United States inaugurates it's first African-American president! Everyone here at the home office will be able watch on a big projector in Building 543. It's very exciting!
The little video above is of an amazing model at Legoland in California. It's an all lego miniature of the inauguration! For being a miniature, it's pretty large, and real impressive! It even has a mini presidential motorcade!

Many of you may already know the sad news that the great Eartha Kitt passed away from cancer on Thursday. She was 81 years old, and was a fantastic singer, a pretty good actress, and smoldering sexy! She briefly played Cat-Woman on the Batman series in the 60's. She could sing in at least 3 languages that I know of. Her voice was unique and to die for! I could go on and on! Above is a video featuring her performing the song Just an Old Fashioned Girl. Good-bye Eartha Kitt, we'll miss you!
