Spring Store Displays

January 25th, 2012 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

One of the things I’m most looking forward to when our Philly store opens on Friday is seeing our new spring store displays! Our display team has transformed the entire atmosphere of our store from rich, sparkling winter to a light and airy spring.  The floating wire and floral elements catch the light, creating intricate patterns that dance on the walls and bring the store to life like a gentle breeze blowing through tree leaves.  The colorful Free People intimates pop happily out of a moss-covered wall and star-like floral and string creations pepper the bare surfaces. Spring, we are ready for you!

I would LOVE to see tutorials for these- especially the hanging spherical decorations with flowers and ribbons at the bottom! It’s great to see a store put this kind of effort into their display. Believe me, it doesn’t go unnoticed or unappreciated. Seeing this while shopping at Free People (and Anthropologie) only reinforces for me the fact that you’re a thoughtful, creative, and inspiring company with a style and ascetic very much like my own. Now…if only I could afford all of your clothes and accessories!

One question- do you look for employees at your store locations who will specifically work on the displays/be part of the visual display team, or do most of the people hired there work on the displays as part of the job?

DIY Charm Bracelets & Gift Toppers

December 21st, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

I have a special two-part DIY for you today! I started out wanting to make little charm bracelets inspired by one I saw on the wrist of a co-worker:

DIY Charm Bracelets & Gift Toppers

And then, I thought that these would make great little add-ons to holiday gifts! Say you’re going to a holiday party and bringing a bottle of wine or champagne for your friend – tie a little personalized charm bracelet around the neck to make it more special! And that got me thinking about gift toppers

I’m one of those people who is terminally gift-wrap-challenged. No matter how hard I try, you can always tell which gifts are from me because the wrapping paper is wrinkled, sometimes torn, and all-around disheveled.  This year I decided maybe I’m taking the wrong approach. I love the idea of using plain brown recycled paper to wrap a present, and then dressing it up with cute little toppers. I am happy to say it totally worked – the toppers look really sweet and natural with the brown paper, and kinda detract from the poor wrapping job.

But first, the charm bracelets:

What you need: for the charm bracelets I used silk thread, charms and beads, all from AC Moore.

I love the simplicity of just one charm on the bracelet, and the pretty colors of the thread. I simply added a bead to each side of the charm, with knots on either side. Once I was finished with the DIY, they made nice little holiday gifts for my co-workers :)

Now for the gift toppers:

I used the above items (not really sure what you’d call them?), both of which can be found at AC Moore. I especially love the branches on the left, and they actually smell really nice too. I also used a couple of twigs that I picked up outside :)

I loved the idea of using natural elements like this, and I also picked up some little fake creatures to go with it:

Lastly, in true FP style, I wanted to incorporate little touches of pink, so I used the following supplies from my crafting drawer and our display workroom.

Neon acrylic paint, paintbrush, pink duct tape and pink embroidery floss.

Here are the results!

To make the twig look decorative I wrapped it in pink embroidery floss!

It also makes a perfect perch for the little bird:

Attaching a fake (or real!) flower to the twig also makes it festive – and I love using the hay as ribbon to tie it down to the gift!

For this one I painted random leaves of the branch neon red. This would look awesome on a pine cone too.

Lastly, the charm bracelets also make great gift toppers! Such a nice way to personalize a gift even more :)

A Dreamy Night at FP Portland

December 7th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Remember how I told you our Portland store was having an awesome event with artist Rachael Rice? Well she was kind enough to send me a little write up and some photos from the event! I’m so sad I wasn’t there, it looks like it was a magical night :)

We had a blast at Friday’s DIY Dream Catcher event! A nice crowd of people of all ages came to get their dream on! Free People Portland served maple butterscotch cake with edible glitter from The Yoga of Cake, and supplies were donated by local indie shop Relica Vintage. Plus, everyone was super cute in their FP clothes! Said one crafter, “I felt so Portland getting on the bus with my dream catcher!” Rachael made another smaller piece to raffle off, so now there are two chances to win. Drawing is Dec. 15th – don’t miss it on their Facebook page!

My best friend’s uncle used to make these back when we were kids. He admitted dream catchers were not a tradition of his particular people. But he said none of his customers questioned the authenticity of his art since he was an old “indian” guy. Don’t think that this cultural appropriation is something that only privileged whites do. Very little in this world is ever authentic.

  • I learned to make dream catchers at camp in Oklahoma where I lived as a little girl. Later I became an art teacher and explored all manner of non-European art and craft. As explained at the event, these are aesthetic, not spiritual objects.

My art draws on the same love I have for cultures that influence my own and features elements of rock and roll (African-American Blues tradition), Eastern spirituality (mystic Vajrayana Buddhism), and the arts and crafts traditions of the world. I claim no heritage other than the space occupied by my own heart.

Cultural appropriation is a risk a “white privileged girl” runs if she explores traditions and cultural expressions beyond McDonald’s, astroturf and Neoconservatism. But in perspective, it’s a dream catcher, not a nuclear bomb.

The blues are universal. Everyone can sing ‘em.

In that case, do you have to be white to celebrate Christmas? I mean, its a Judeo-Christian tradition coming out of pagan rituals in Germanic tribes and polytheistic societies. Or is it ok to steal European traditions as long as White Anglo Saxs don’t DARE even IMAGINE to understand another culture or tradition. Come on people, it was an arts and crafts project. LET IT GO

DIY Holiday Ornaments

November 2nd, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

It’s November and holiday season is officially upon us – so why not get a head start on your holiday shopping and decorating? When it comes to both of these things, there’s nothing better than something handmade – it gives it that special little personal touch that can go a long way. I can’t get enough of these clear Christmas bulbs because there is so much you can do with them – and they make great decorations or little stocking stuffers for your family and friends :)

For those of you who are coming to our Cambridge Crafting Party on Saturday, we’ll have the supplies to make these cute little ornaments, but for everyone else here’s a tutorial!

IMG 0033 DIY Holiday Ornaments

What you need:

Clear Christmas bulbs – I got these at A.C. Moore but you can also order them online from Amazon!

Gather whatever other embellishments you like! I used yarn, glitter, fake feathers, fake flowers, glue and a little plastic figurine I had lying around. But the best part about these is you can literally do almost anything!

deer DIY Holiday Ornaments

I’ve had this little plastic deer sitting at my desk for a while now, and for my first ornament I knew I wanted to make him a little snow globe :) I gave him a bed of green yarn that I used fabric glue to attach to the base of the ornament. The deer fit perfectly into the ornament – I just dabbed a little bit of glue on his feet and stuck him right in! For the finishing touch I added some white glitter to give the appearance of snow when I shake it.

IMG 0039 DIY Holiday Ornaments

I would love to have a whole tree decorated with ornaments like this – with little woodland creatures and scenes living inside!

IMG 0042 DIY Holiday Ornaments

For my next ornament I filled it with some fake flowers and added some glitter for a little sparkle :) I think this would look really pretty with real flowers too – dried flowers would look so nice!

For the third ornament I used different colored fake feathers – I like how this one looks different as it turns at different angles, and almost like tie dye :)

As a finishing touch, I love the idea of hanging the ornaments with neon thread!

If you guys have any other ideas for what you can do with these clear ornaments, I’d love to hear! I’ve seen some pretty neat ones made into mini terrariums…
