10,000 trees: help a short documentary grow tall

last week i received an email with the title i used for this post. intrigued, i opened the email and found the story of sarah berkovich, who was writing about a project very close to her heart:

“two years ago in an environmental science class, i was given a creative assignment that started me on the journey to producing a film. i told the story of my grandfather, victor kaufmann, who in his eighties, has been planting seedlings by hand all over his otherwise barren land in lyle, washington. despite the physical hurdles of age, his goal is to reach 10,000 trees.

the reaction i received from my documentary film class upon sharing his story surprised me: “you have to make this a film!”

i realized that my classmates are right. not only is this story inspiring to me and my family, but it can inspire everyone with the message that it’s never too late to accomplish your dreams.”

sarah and her friend sarah ginsburg, who is helping her produce the film, have created a page on kickstarter where you can watch a video about the project and make a donation to support the documentary:

stories like this are so inspiring to me- a real girl with a dream and a passion who is doing whatever she can to accomplish her goal. thanks so much for sharing, sarah!

shiela’s story

today’s fan story is from sheila from portland OR, a student and artist who sent in some of her recent work.  she wrote that she loves fiber art and is always inspired by the materials that free people uses, and has incorporated some tears from  fp catalogs into her work.

fan stories: on the fresh coast

today i want to share a couple more fan stories that have been sent in!

the first comes from amy, who sent in some photos from her blog on the fresh coast, which is titled after living along the great lakes her whole life and weekending near the wisconson glacial lakes, a common activity among people who live in her area.

i really love the photo of her bedroom, which she decorated with some driftwood wrapped in string, inspired by this photo i posted a little while back:

here’s her take on it:

stories from our fans

i am so inspired by this story and artwork sent in from reader keely, from savannah, georgia.  a college student who paints on the side, she was inspired by one of our summer display bikes to create jewelry out of wood, hemp, floss thread, scrapbook paper, fabric and free people catalogs!

it was this bike – specifically the wheels – that sparked her inspiration:

and here’s a look at the jewelry she created:

here are some of her paintings, which she creates using mixed media such as fabric, paper, glitter and acrylic paint.  i love how colorful and cheerful they are:

finally, i had to share this photo of her christmas tree, decorated with all DIY ornaments!

diy inspiration!

this awesome photo was sent in by our reader jenna, who wrote:

“so i’m on winter break…and have a ton of free time. i bought a cheap ukelele and am currently teaching myself how to play via youtube. anyway, i was still bored, so i decided to decorate my uke using acrylic paint… i think it ended up looking pretty freepeople-esque!”

i agree! i love it so much :)

getting to know you

one of the coolest things about my job as free people blogger is that i get to interact with so many of our customers and fans.  whether it’s through the emails i get every day from blog readers, the comments people leave on blog posts, or photos and artwork people upload to facebook, i am constantly inspired by our fans.

but i want to get to know you even better, and share your stories on the blog so everyone can see them. tell me your story about free people – how you first discovered us, why you love free people, where you like to wear your free people, artwork and photography inspired by free people – you name it, i want to see it and hear it.

you can send your stories, photos, drawings, paintings, DIY projects, and more to blog@freepeople.com

i want to compile as many as possible for a little project we’d like to do as an ongoing tribute to you, our readers and fans.

can’t wait to hear from you! xoxo

with a little love from our fans

one of our fans reached out to us on facebook to share her connection with free people, and had this to say:

“I just wanted  to say that I personally love the free people philosophies. Not many clothing  brands tend to inspire you as a “person” but free people does a great job at  inspiring their consumers, daily. Through the art and photography in the  catalogs, to the clothing materials themselves, they allow you to DREAM to be the person you feel you are to be, without restraint, without holding back, to have the FREEdom to be who you are, and for that to be a beautiful thing. To live and love in the moment. To dare to be more with your life and to not worry about what others may perceive. Be you, be beautiful (that is  my personal motto) and I believe free people does a wonderful job capturing that specific essence. Great job. Much love,  Candice.”

that is what it’s all about! thank you for the inspiring words, candice, it means so much to us. xoxo.
