Hello again from Hanoi! It’s 6 am, and we’ve just arrived back on the night train from Sa Pa, and just enjoyed a delicious breakfast of Pho and watermelon juice. We’re about to hop on a flight to Hoi An, a beach town on the south central coast of Vietnam, on the south China Sea. We’re literally doing hair and make-up on the street outside of a cafe…
As you may have seen by now, we had a very special cameo by one of our beloved home office pups in the September catalog – Toby! I caught up with Toby the other day to ask him about his experience shooting his first Free People catalog :)
Were you nervous about being a part of our September catalog shoot? I was a little nervous, but once we started shooting, I relaxed.
What did you do to prepare for the shoot? Well, I’m a natural so I didn’t do much. I had a bath and made sure my paws were extra clean.
What did you think of Bambi, the model you posed with? She was great! I think we complimented each other well. At first, she was a bit scared of me, but after she realized I was a gentle giant, she had fun.
What was your favorite part of the shoot? Being showered with cookies and attention from all the ladies :)
Do you get stopped on the street now that you’re a famous catalog model? Not so much…
Will you be doing any more modeling in the future? I hope to. I am available :)
What’s your favorite thing about Fall? Boots and the cooler weather!
Toby wasn’t the only pup on set at the September shoot! He had a bud to hang out with – Ace!
Ace lives on the farm in New Tripoli where our catalog was shot. He lost his leg when he was hit by a car but he is doing just fine now! He had a blast during the shoot and LOVED all the attention from the ladies :) He is one happy dog!
It’s a rainy, chilly day in Philadelphia and I wish I could jump inside these behind the scenes photos from our September catalog shoot. They have me longing to curl up on the couch in a bulky sweater and drink hot chocolate while listening to records.
To end the day, here is our September 2011 catalog video! Shot by our videographer, featuring models Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Martha Hunt. Bambi and Martha prance through fields like forest nymphs with flowers in their hair, wrapped in cozy fabrics and textures and the golden light of the Autumn sun.
Song is “All We Ever Wanted Was Everything” by Bauhaus.
Looking through our September catalog you can feel Fall emanating from its pages. Cozy knits and texture, plaid and lots of layers – all things that I can’t wait to wrap myself up in as the temperature drops. Shot at a beautiful old mill in New Tripoli PA by Yelena Yemchuk, the book features models Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Martha Hunt. Here’s a sneak peek…I can almost smell the crisp chilly air and hear the crunch of leaves beneath my feet…
Guess who else makes a special appearance?!
The September catalog drops Tuesday September 6th.
Behind the scenes photos by Thomas Northcut except last two, by Jemma.

behind the scenes pics from our june e-catalog shoot here at the navy yard in philly! as i’ve told you, day one we shot with martha hunt in our web studio, with her boyfriend as hair stylist. it was such a fun day- he was doing the coolest stuff with her hair, and martha is always a blast to be around – we love her!
our senior photographer showed us this cool camera trick – tape a piece of cardboard over your camera lens with the tiniest little pinhole in the middle:
the result is this cool ghostly effect:
day two we worked with andreea diaconu and shot outdoors in the wilderness of the navy yard :) there is a lot of abandoned land down here that used to be used for military barracks and such, so we went to one of the fields and had a pretty entertaining time fending off deer ticks and tending to a few cuts and bruises… andreea was a trooper and looked beautiful as she danced amidst the grass.
group huddle around the computer to review shots :)
