Last weekend I went on a mini road trip with friends to just – get out of the city a bit. I headed the music while one danced around and the other manned the wheel. One Wawa sandwich, some day dreaming, laughing, and a couple of book pages later, it hit me that I had forgotten how much fun road trips could be. Utter relaxation. I highly suggest going for a ride some place with the homies today. Set a destination a bit farther than usual and head out. Enjoy the moment.

With all this talk of New Zealand and Australia here at the home offices I’ve been thirsting to learn more about the area. The wildlife and natural world I see in photographs has always intrigued me, but I wanted to know – what are the best spots, and what are the experiences actually like? So, when Soné Moriarty, a native New Zealander now living in Qatar, sent over a link to her blog (Polli Blog) I knew she’d be the perfect person to ask. With a passion for the simple pleasures in life, she seemed like a good, down-to-earth woman who could point me to the right things. Read through below on some of her favorite experiences and spots from the island country of New Zealand.

I am Soné Moriarty a Graphic designer and blogger from New Zealand. My blog is an inspirational online scrapbook of fashion, photography and my personal life.

Before starting this blog post I really had to narrow down all the pictures I had on my computer. So many good memories, so many beautiful places and so many things I love about New Zealand, the list is endless.

My favourite time of the year would have to be summer. It’s the time of the year where me and my hubby usually setup a backpack and a small tent to go camping along the coastal sides of New Zealand.

All you need is a bottle of wine, chips and dip, a flower crane and a guitar. As most of the camping sites are free and you’re able to wake up next to the beach and enjoy a warm cup of coffee.

Summer time is the best times to also find really good vintage buys. You can find the most beautiful vintage summer dresses and leather satchels in some of the smallest towns. Which is a raging trend at the moment! I always try to snatch up the peter-pan collared dresses which is almost impossible, yet so exciting when you do find one.

Hawks Bay is one of my favourite hot spots in New Zealand. Not only are you surrounded by vineyards but I love to go strawberry picking and strolling through a few local art and crafts stores in town.

Visiting the local Farmers markets is usually a must, as you’re able to stock up your cupboards with loads of fresh and organic local produce. My “have to get list” are usually, cherries, feijoas, strawberries, pineapples and mango’s and let’s not forget the ice cream.

Another must on your list would have to enjoy brunch at a boutique coffee shop called “French Tart” in Hamilton. I love meeting friends there for a vanilla shot coffee after a long weeks of work to unwind.

Weekend Getaways: Road Tripping

August 19th, 2011 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

Do you ever have that feeling that you’re stuck in a rut? You find yourself following a routine and it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture when you’re hung up on monotonous little details. Sometimes removing yourself from normality is all it takes to clear your head and gain a new perspective. I dealt with this a few years ago and in order to snap myself out of it I packed up my car and set out on a road trip with my good friend. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done – the freedom of the open road and not knowing where our next stop would be, the excitement of discovering a new place and the utter sense of joy that came with just driving with the windows rolled down and music turned up.

While a road trip across the country may not be entirely practical, you can still take a road trip to someplace nearby. Pack your bags and take off, without a known destination. When you can’t drive any further, stop and camp out for the night or find a hotel room and see what you discover about whatever place you’re in…you’ll probably discover something new about yourself while you’re at it.

Here are some of the photos from my trip…the camera I took them with may have been disposable, but the memories definitely are not.

Seeking inspiration and exhilaration, I joined my husband Scott and his band, Family Band for the southern leg of their tour with Warpaint.  These are some of the photos from that week of sultry, lush tropical southern magic.

We went to Durham, Asheville, Nashville, Athens, New Orleans, Houston and Austin. After a brief taste of southern culture I’m already itching to go back and really explore these places!

Everyone (except me!) took turns driving. Kim & Jonny’s glowing dash pyramid guided the way.

the merch booth is a great place to meet the locals! Kim, the singer of Family Band, is an amazing fine artist. She probably drew the image on the right in her sleep.

Scott picked up a deck of cards on Olivera St. in LA. and Family Band had a tradition of picking a new card every day. I love arrows, so this was a favorite. On the right is Little Dreamer, our sweet chariot!

I wore these Free People jeans every single day! On the right is the Mercy Lounge in Nashville – there were freight train tracks directly behind the venue.

On the way to Athens, GA, we used swimmingholes.org to find a quick swimming hole – this is Kim crossing on the way out.

Tour is a total blur as you are usually doing 7-9 hour drives every day, so I’m not positive where this was, but I think on the way to New Orleans. I loved the design of these bridges.

rt7 guest post: emily of talon nyc

You can’t deny the romantic architecture of New Orleans. We had a few hours off here, but I need to go back for more. The club in New Orleans had gothic chandeliers and timber framing.

Kim’s vintage sequin butterfly shirt is so rad! On the right she is wearing a Lindsey Thornburg dress from Bona Drag in New Orleans.

Barton Springs Austin guest post: emily of talon nyc

Barton Springs in Austin – This is the most amazing cold-water spring. It’s all natural and has rocks and plants growing in the cool water. We had a day off in Austin and spent an afternoon here swimming and people-watching.

Breakfast tacos and Migas are the order of the day at Polvos restaurant in Austin. Right – Michaladas are the best! It’s like a bloody mary with beer.

Left – Backstage art at La Zona Rosa in Austin.
Right -Family Band and Warpaint shared a goodbye meal and hang at the wonderful Justine’s in Austin.

guest blog post: antique road trip

March 23rd, 2011 / Posted by fpguestblogger / Permalink

In 1848, thousands of men migrated to Placerville, CA in search of gold after hearing news of it’s discovery. A few weeks ago Lauren and I visited the birthplace of The Gold Rush via historic Highway 49, and found ourselves on our own search of treasures and antiques . . .

a couple of weeks ago, a reader named kayla contacted us to let us know that we inspired her and her sister to take a cross country road trip that they documented on her tumblr.  her photos were so amazing i couldn’t wait to share- and they also fit perfectly with our current americana theme.

their photos give you a wonderful taste of what it’s like to drive across the united states – from deserts and teepees to skyscrapers and subway cars.  looking at their pictures is making me nostalgic for my own road trip. i want to do it again.
