Sometimes, as winter blankets our surroundings with its bitter chill, it’s tough to stay fashionably motivated. Rising out of bed in the morning involves a laborious upheaval from an all-too-comfortable toasty nest. The last thing you want to do is spend time, half-naked in a drafty bedroom, pulling an outfit together. It tends to turn into, “grab the first items in your drawer, and pile them on as fast as you can.”
To dress well as the air gets chillier though, we’ve come to realize that the under layer becomes less important. To pull off a great look that won’t leave you freezing, it’s all about that top winter layer. Here, some of the Free People girls show us how to move into the new season while keeping it fresh with a few of our favorite jackets. They remind us that a good scarf and hat can go a long way to trap in heat, and, don’t forget, the season’s must-have item – a pair of killer close-toed boots. All of these things – jacket, boots, and winter accessories – will help you bring those easy under layers into the new season.
Oh yes, the jacket is reversible! This look on our New Romantics Design Assistant is perfect for heading out to a holiday party. She’s wearing: Ana’s Beaded Party Dress, FP One Reversible Fur Parka, Jonesy Heeled Hiker boots, and an old Free People necklace much like this one.
Our Visual Merchandiser is the master of layering and quirky details. She’s wearing: The Royal Blue Peacoat, FP Skinny Cords, Lacy Layering Top, cropped tank like this one, La Bourse Plaid Button-Down, Northern Lights Boots, and the Regal Stone Necklace.
Looking rock-n-roll ready, our Sample Coordinator is wearing: the Embellished Leather Jacket, Fishnet Long Sleeve Top, FP High Waisted Textured Shorts, London Opaque Tights, Vegan Docs, and the Eclipse Necklace.
I came across these scarves on green eyed monster and I loved the story behind them so much – for anyone out there who, like me, suffers from seasonal depression, here’s a little ray of light :)
“I am always bewildered by the arrival of early autumn darkness. I travel around in my normal routines confused for weeks. This year I felt I needed to try harder to understand the transition. Was there some way I could prepare? Without even knowing it I found I was using my camera as a tool to dissect the final hours of illumination. I became fixated on capturing a momentary blanket of light, of all tones and colors, which I could hold and pull up around me when all I see is black. I wanted to feel the light. I needed to see the light. And now I feel ready. Come darkness, here we are again.”
it may be spring but that doesn’t mean you should put away your scarves just yet! there are so many ways to wear them well into spring and summer, and our team made this awesome video (featuring one of our stylists and our assistant web merchandiser) demonstrating several of those ways. i am in love with the scarves shown above on sasha pivovarova from our april catalog…check them and more out online here, but first watch the video below :)
our stylist is wearing the scalloped back lace crop top and thrifted skirt (but stay tuned b/c we have a similar skirt coming in may!) and our assistant web merchandiser is wearing the fp-1 daydreams gauze tunic. the scarf used is the faded dye scarf.
