Blogger Diary: Scrubbing Away Winter Blues

Well it’s definitely Winter. While I seem to hold up to the cold better than others (growing up in Syracuse, NY will teach anyone) my skin has been feeling the effects. The fact that I also live in a different part of the city than many of my close friends, has meant that I’ve spent many a night crashing on couches, and not giving my body the care it deserves. The cold of winter can also get a bit depressing for me. It’s tough to get out and about, having to pile on clothes just to do so. Not to mention the limited hours of sun. I find that it’s especially important to step back and take care of yourself at this time of year. Although it did get a lot warmer this weekend, I decided to give my skin a little treat – both for its well being and for my mentality .

While at Whole Foods picking up ingredients for a cooking blogger meet up (stay tuned this weekend for the healthy treats we came up with) I grabbed some Home Health Almond Glow Rose Skin Lotion to make my own body scrub. I love this oil because it combines my two favorite skin benefitting ingredients – almond oil and vitamin E. It also smells like roses which is one of my favorite scents. You can purchase it in other scents if you wish, but I’m a big believer in the power of roses.

I combined 1/3 cup of the Almond Glow Lotion with about one cup of brown sugar and ten drops of lavender essential oil to make the scrub. It’s great because the brown sugar scrubs off the dead dry skin while the oil is deep moisturizing and full of antioxidants to nourish that fresh under layer. After putting the mixture together, I stuck it in a bell jar since it makes enough to last for a few scrubs. I was at a friend’s house when I showered. I knew that if my skin is feeling it, others’ must be too, so I left the extra in her shower as a little treat. My skin feels so great today – baby smooth. I will definitely whip up some more in a few days to use every so often for the remainder of these cold months. There’s nothing like a great nourishing scrub to help you feel good in your own skin and to hold up against the brutalities of winter’s.

Hey Rhonda, if you follow the link it will take you to Amazon where you can order it online. If you don’t want to order it online, you can probably find it – or something similar – at any natural foods or skincare store. Just look for something with almond oil and vitamin E. Good luck!

And Sara – yes, you can also make scrubs with epsom salts. Use the same ratio of 1/3cup oil to 1cup salts with 8-10drops of essential oil. I also like to grind the salts down a bit more if they’re really chunky. I happened to already have brown sugar in the house and didn’t feel like spending money for the salt which is why I used the sugar. Whichever you prefer – I think that they both work great!

Yay! Syracuse in the house! :-)
Thanks Naomi! I will definitely make some of this.

sounds so yummy, don’t you know maybe how to mix homemade salt scrub? i prefer mostly that, it romoves the dead cells better

Kitchen Confidential: Double Creamed Tart

January 1st, 2012 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

This time in Kitchen Confidential, we bring you Craig – a master chef working in our 543 cafeteria who came to us from Michelin star restaurant, Spruce, in San Francisco. Craig has some awesome culinary training strapped under his belt, and has traveled far and wide to places including Japan to perfect his craft. There he picked up skills like how to masterfully breakdown a fish along with little superstitions like where to set your knife down when you’re done. His philosophy these days is, “keep it simple, good ingredients, and great technique.” He loves to flavor with fresh herbs, and wants dishes to feel seasonally appropriate.

When we caught up with Craig he was preparing a Double Creamed Tart for our composed salad station. Since it’s getting a bit chilly outside, he crafted this recipe to include something savory and a bit heartier in the assortment. “In the winter people want something that’s a bit heavier and has had more time put into the cooking,” he explained. He then went on to stress that because of its richness, “this is a dish that should be served in small portions to provide just the right amount of satisfaction.”

To get the tart at home, you’ll need:

For the pie crust:

350 grams of flour

200 grams of butter

Ice water

Pinch of salt

For the filling:

2 cups of cream

1 large yellow onion – finely chopped

1 bunch of thyme – chopped

1 bunch of rosemary – chopped

Caramelized onions:

3 Oz. of Olive Oil

3 Large Onions – chopped long

Pinch of salt

Tbsp of Butter

Tbsp Chopped Thyme

Tbsp Chopped Rosemary

Fine herbs:

1 Sprig of Parsley – finely chopped

4 Sprigs of Chives – finely chopped

1 Sprig of Tarragon – finely chopped

Process:

Craig started by prebaking his pie crust, slowly caramelizing his onions over the stove (adding fresh herbs in at the end), and slowly reducing his cream down with chopped onion and herbs into a thick double cream.

He then filled the pan with the doubled cream and sprinkled the caramelized onions on top to make them highly visible. He topped the whole thing off with generous crumbles of goat cheese and a drizzle of olive oil.

Craig then placed the tart into the oven for about 20 minutes at 350F, taking it out as soon as the top became slightly browned.

While letting the tart cool, Craig prepared some fine herbs – a blend of parsley, chives, and tarragon. Once the tart reached room temperature, juice from ½ a lemon was squeezed juice into the herb mixture which was then sprinkled on top. It’s important to wait until the tart is fully cooled here. Sprinkling fine herbs on too soon may cause them to wilt or brown.

Braving the Elements

November 16th, 2011 / Posted by fp naomi / Permalink

Sometimes, as winter blankets our surroundings with its bitter chill, it’s tough to stay fashionably motivated. Rising out of bed in the morning involves a laborious upheaval from an all-too-comfortable toasty nest. The last thing you want to do is spend time, half-naked in a drafty bedroom, pulling an outfit together. It tends to turn into, “grab the first items in your drawer, and pile them on as fast as you can.”

To dress well as the air gets chillier though, we’ve come to realize that the under layer becomes less important. To pull off a great look that won’t leave you freezing, it’s all about that top winter layer. Here, some of the Free People girls show us how to move into the new season while keeping it fresh with a few of our favorite jackets. They remind us that a good scarf and hat can go a long way to trap in heat, and, don’t forget, the season’s must-have item – a pair of killer close-toed boots. All of these things – jacket, boots, and winter accessories – will help you bring those easy under layers into the new season.

total eclipse of the moon

December 20th, 2010 / Posted by fp julia / Permalink

eclipse1 total eclipse of the moon

tonight is not only the longest night of the year, but also for the first time since 1638 there will be a total lunar eclipse coinciding with the winter solstice! starting at about 1:15 a.m. (e.s.t.) the moon will start to darken as the earth’s shadow moves across it, with the deepest shadow occurring at approximately 3:15 a.m. (e.s.t.), when the moon will take on a reddish orange glow.  yeah, it’s the middle of the night, but this won’t occur on the winter solstice again until 2094!
