lula

The third issue of girly British mag lula is out! I know this is a magazine that has definitely been talked about among the designers at FP. The content is fashion mixed with beautiful whimsical fantasy and nostalgia. A magazine you’ll want to book mark rather than tear out the pages…
It kind of amazes me when I take the time to actually read a magazine from cover to cover, and it becomes clear how connected everything is. Like in the interview with the designers from clothing line Lover, they talked about being inspired by Marianne Faithfull’s biography. And then toward the back, there is an interview with Marianne Faithfull herself. How suddenly certain trends, interests, people, just emerge as important to a place in time…

Congratulations to Aileen for winning her wishlist on freepeople.com! She was the lucky girl that won $1000 worth of items on her FP wishlist. One item she couldn’t wait to get was the Re-In-Vented Coat. She said she fell in love with the unique details, like the buttons and the vent. Other favorites on her list…the Soft Military Pocket Slim Pant in Indigo, Yoke Cowl Dropwaist in Strawberry and Deep Plum… basics with an edge she says.
Aileen’s choices were influenced by a recent move to San Fransisco, “so I went for pieces that would help keep me toasty throughout the winter months.” She said she loves Free People for the “Detailed pieces that are unique and fun. They help me retain my youthful glow.” Enjoy all of you new clothes, Aileen!
I also want to congratulate the following who won $100 gift cards!
Danielle, Jordan, Natalie, Sarah, and Skye!!!!!!!

one shoulder

The one shoulder dress was shown all over the runways for spring, but it seems like fashion is moving so fast that the trend has arrived before the season! Here is the Free People version in an easy to wear knit embellished with embroidery and beading.
Also wanted to give a bit of info on this beautiful yellow background our creative assistant painted. It was inspired by our Bali concept, so she looked at lots of different batik sarongs for pattern ideas. The way she executed it kind of relates to the batik technique as well. She layed down a bunch of sticks and draped string all around and taped these down. She then rolled paint over these textures and pulled them off after painting. She used the pattern created by the resist to embellish with more color. She admits the process took her more time than necessary, but she has truly made a work of art!

in response…

This post is in response to a few comments posted about the holiday catalog… We got an overwhelming response to our first holiday catalog. Way better than we had expected. Unfortunately, the second catalog (Holiday in Bali) was planned and shot at the same time as the first, and featured some of the same products. We had no way to edit the second catalog once items unexpectedly sold out.
Please forgive us! We are really excited we received such a great response, and will definitely be able to learn from this for future catalogs. If there is an item you just can’t live without, you can contact our call center @ 800-309-1500. They may be able to locate the item in one of our store locations.

trip to bali

Our newest holiday catalog is out now! Keep a look out in your mailbox. Or check it out on our website. The inspiration for the latest collection was Bali, especially the textiles. We shot the catalog in Hobe Sound, Florida. Seeing these clothes and the location really makes me dream of taking a trip!

ornaments

Word has it, these ornaments are selling out quick. I wanted to share their story, even though they might not be available much longer…
These funny girls were inspired by a vintage statue found in London of some sort of crazy wood nymph. Our accessories designer picked out some extreme trims while traveling through India and Hong Kong. She brought them back to Philly and a few of the designers worked to design different outfits and personalities for the girls. Once they picked the best ones, the accessories designer named all her babies. Here’s what she was thinking with the names…
(from left to right)
holly wood… came from the accessories designer’s Halloween costume last year, and the ornament has a wooden head
betty wilson… reminded the designer of a neon colored lady from a fifties sitcom
coco cabana… she would probably serve frozen drinks on a cruise or something
pips o’hare… pippie long stocking pigtails
toni rockafella… check out her bling
pixie bell… a prettty winter fairy

PatchNYC makes these dolls, too. A wedding cake topper was featured in a magazine. Their wooden-headed pipecleaner couples "start" at $500. I made my own for about $5. If I cold attach a picture, I would!

I became totally obsessed with making these little "wooden head pipe cleaner dollies"! They've been such a creative inspiration, as cheesy as that sounds! They look superb on my pink Christmas Tree. ;)

Mr. John Galliano seems to be the guest editor for the December/January issue of French Vogue. Hopefully this means a healthy dose of avant garde fashion fantasies to get us through the new year. And speaking of getting us through the new year, the issue also comes with a limited edition 2007 calendar (pictured above). I received this news via stylebubble. She also recommends December’s British Vogue, it’s 90th birthday issue, even for those that aren’t usual Vogue readers. She’ll tell you why

fpgirl -Nov 13, 2006, 11:50AM
Hi everyone. Just wanted to update you... I have spent the weekend pouring over the anniversary issue of British Vogue and it is definitely worth the $10. There is so much history and quite a bit of illustration. They did a lot of story telling as well, such as informing us of where they found the vintage pieces for the feature shoot. This is a Vogue you may actually want to read rather than just tear out the pretty pictures.

I can't wait to get the new Vogue!

the bears

When thinking about the whole “vintage wintertime” concept (see “holidays are a comin”), we were really attracted to old stuffed animals. In addition to the enormous stuffed bear we’ve designed for our store windows, we decided to make some Free People bears to sell. The accessories designers asked a bunch of people in the office to bring in their favorite old stuffed bears. The one above is modeled after a bear that belongs to our store design and diplay manager.

And this one was made to look like the favorite bear of the founder of our company! The accessories girls had the bears made and then had them embellished with all the classic fp goodness… patchwork, embroidery, buttons and beads.

Our holiday catalog was shot in Alaska amidst glaciers, reindeer, and sleigh dogs. The above photo was shot at the Matanuska glacier.

The girls had to park the van and hike about a mile to the Matanuska glacier because it was impossible to drive through the icy ground. They had to carry EVERYTHING with them that mile including all the outfits, photo equipment, and hair & makeup supplies.
helicopter.JPG
Part of the shoot was done on a glacier called Punch Bowl. They were staying in a town about 1 hour southeast of Anchorage and had to take a helicopter up to the glacier location. Suprisingly, this was not the first helicopter ride for either of the girls from the Free People team. Our art director had been on one for a prior job, and her partner in crime had been on one at a car show at the age of four…
For more “behind the scenes” click here to see a video from the holiday shoot.

i had been wondering where the holiday catalog was shot. It's so beautiful there! I agree it's your best catalog yet. Thanks for putting up the video for an inside glimpse! (p.s. i've never even been near a helicopter)
Jessica -Nov 08, 2006, 12:41PM
I also want to say how much I loved the catalog! I had just plopped down with my five sleddogs to enjoy some browsing- and how perfect!! Beautiful clothes and models, beautiful scenery, and dogsledding!

Hi Jen. We have found some really amazing vintage wallpaper on ebay. You should try there, especially since you won't need too much to do a bathroom. Let us know if you find anything good!

Love the blog. Do you take requests? I need some fabulous wallpaper for my bathroom. Where can I find some online?
