reuse your old calendar

The new year is quickly approaching, and if you are like me, you are going to have a couple of defunct calendars on your hands soon! I’m always at a loss of what to do with them, since I usually like the pictures so much! This year however, I am looking forward to turning my old calendars into envelopes and notecards! Both Mara Rivet at Thrifty Fun and Kelli on There is No Place Like Home have really cute and easy tutorials on how to do it! Definitely check them out if you are looking for a fun way to reuse your calendars! You could use magazine tears too!
The cute old calendar picture above was found at this interesting site.

sarah’s jewelry hits stores this week!

Remember a little bit ago when I posted about the jewelry that our accessories designer, Sarah makes? Well, I am very excited to report that some of her pieces will be hitting our Paramus NJ, Short Hills NJ, and King of Prussia PA stores this week! Make sure to check them out if you plan on doing any after-Christmas shopping at Free People!

beaded trees

A lot of you have a little break next week, and maybe you want a fun holiday craft to do? I posted these a couple years ago and everyone loved them, so I thought I’d share again!
Our display team made these beaded trees with those styrofoam cones you can buy at the craft store, a bunch of beads, and straight pins. They are SO easy to make and look so pretty and festive. Dump out that bead box and start pinning!
I can see these looking really pretty in more specific colors too, like if you did one all white and sparkly, or used just a few colors instead of the rainbow.

FP Holiday Playlist!

We have yet another fun holiday diversion for you! I recently went around and asked everyone here at the home office for their favorite holiday or wintertime songs! We have put them together on a playlist for you, which you can access by clicking here. Please note however, that you need to have iTunes installed on your computer to be able to view the playlist. We have been experimenting with different ways to put up playlists for you, so we of course welcome any feedback!
At any rate, check out the playlist! It includes over 30 songs, including this awesome classic sung by Eartha Kitt below…

10 quick questions – Kate

What is your job here at FP?
web producer/nerd/sarcastic jerk
What is your current state of mind?
I sort of feel like crawling under a rock today, but also I’m excited about Thanksgiving.
Who are your heroes?
Conan O’Brian. Bob Dylan. I know I have plenty, but my mind is blanking.
If you could choose what to come back to life as, what would you be?
I might be a hawk, so I could fly but not be afraid of being eaten. Or maybe a gibbon. So I could sing all day and swing through the trees.
What or who is your greatest love?
My mom.
Name one thing necessary to your happiness.
Animals, hugs, pizza – oh crap, that’s 3 things – oh, and laughing, sleeping… I need a lot of things.
What do you hate the most?
People who are unable to see the world though other people’s eyes. Also, people on cellphones.
What would the name of your band be and what genre? What instrument do you play in this band?
“expired medicine” – I don’t remember why, but I remember deciding that. I’d play the drums, even though I don’t know how to play…
What color are you?
Green.
What is your motto?
It might sound hackneyed, but really I believe deeply in The Golden Rule. Although “Get Over It” is a close second.

space 15 twenty

Our third We the Free store will open this Friday in an exciting new space on Cahuenga Blvd in LA. More on the We the Free store later, but here is some info about the new space created by our parent company, Urban Outfitters.
A new retail experiment in Hollywood, CA, Space 15 Twenty creates an opportunity for Urban Outfitters to collaborate with creative brands we find inspiring and interesting.
A courtyard leads from each store to an outdoor performance space and adjoining gallery. Both of which encourage designers and artists to become part of a curated environment. Working with neighboring music, film and art establishments, both courtyard and adjoining gallery will present a rotating cast of local musicians and artists.
The Urban Outfitters store will feature one-off installations by a new designer every few months. Alongside the 11,000 square foot Urban Outfitters store, Space 15 Twenty will host a selection of vendors. The revolving brands utilizing these spaces will reflect and compliment Urban Outfitters and present our customers with an overarching view of people and brands which are excited to be aligned with.
Check out the space15twenty for info on the other tenants and the great events the space will host.

a quick make-up how-to

A few days ago, our customer service representatives received this little note:
Dear Free People,
I receive your catalogs in the mail…thank you. I have a question in regards to your November 2008 catalog.
On pages 25 and 35, is it possible for you to tell me what lipstick color/brand they are?
Thank you.

We asked our make-up artist, Deanna, to help us out with this question, and she told us exactly how she made-up the model’s lips! I thought I’d share her answer with you:
Prepare the lip with a little Eucerin ointment- just enough to moisten the lip.
Then press Make Up For Ever Star powder (loose) in iridescent fuschia into lip, concentrating color more on the center of lips, then build to desired intensity.
Most Make Up For Ever products can be purchased at Sephora!

Thanks Deanna!

whoa.

So I’ve been a fan of Julian Vallée‘s artwork for a while now – he is a master of working with cut and paste, and uses lots of really bright colors! When I saw this piece on Booooooom my first reaction was whoa, and then I knew I had to share it with you! I want to live in a world where that’s what it looks like when you spray paint from a can. Check out Julian’s website to see more of his work – total eye candy.
