jennilee marigomen

you may remember this post i did a while back about the incredibly talented photographer jennilee marigomen.  well she sent me an email last week about an upcoming show she’s curating (more info on that below), and i decided to ask her some questions for the blog!

what is your favorite thing to photograph?
“strange things that don’t really belong, everyday phenomena.”

do you carry a camera around with you at all times?
“yes –  if i don’t have an SLR with me, i usually have a yashica T4 in my bag.”

What inspires you on a daily basis?
“negative space, nature, music and light. and tumblr. :)”

if you were stranded on an island, what three things would you want with you?
“a teepee, canoe, and a camera.”

how did you get involved with 01 magazine?
“i met vancouver based stylist redia soltis in 2008 while we worked on a photo shoot for clothing designers beth richards and brian mendoza. we kept in contact and a few months later, redia and artist nathalee paolinelli approached me about working on 01 magazine. we took a trip to portland to work on our first issue and hit it off instantly. we are working on our fifth issue right now and feel very lucky to have such a great team and awesome people wanting to collaborate and contribute.”

if you weren’t a photographer, what would you do?
“i currently work in the creative marketing department for a canadian clothing distributor, and really love it.  i think that working on photography focused art events for a living would be so amazing too.”

what is your theme song?
“it’s hard to decide.. but “smog in cities” by black moth super rainbow has been my ringtone for the past year.”

if you could go anywhere in the world, free of cost, where would you go?
“iceland’s natural landscape, filled with hot springs, geysers and glaciers are so magnificent and transcendent – the photos i’ve seen look unreal. i think that iceland encompasses everything that i love to photograph. i would be thrilled to see it in person someday.”

if you could spend a day with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?
“mark borthwick or andy goldsworthy.”

here’s just a small sample of jennilee’s amazing work:

i definitely recommend checking out more of her work on her website.

the show that she curated is called stream, a photograph projection show that will take place in two locations (baltimore’s pent house gallery and l.a.’s space 15 twenty) on january 22nd at 8pm. for more info click here.

thanks so much jennilee!!
