in continuing with our exploration of all things prague, here’s a look at some stylin’ ladies on the streets of prague!

to get this easy, layered look, try items like our stirrup leggings, high waisted scrunch skirt, a leather jacket or blazer, and a comfy tank or tee.

lennon wall

when i first saw the photos from our new catalog, i was immediately curious about the graffiti covered wall.  i did a little research and found out that it was named the lennon wall following the death of john lennon in 1980.  since then it has been covered with graffiti pertaining to lennon and his lyrics, as well as notions of peace.  during the period of communist rule in the late 1980’s in prague, western music by artists like lennon was banned. young people would write their grievances on this wall, eventually leading to a clash between them and police on the nearby charles bridge. this movement was referred to by the czech authorities as “lennonism.”

despite attempts to repaint the wall, the graffiti kept coming back and is now tolerated… right on.

shoegaze

a little while back, one of our team members showed me this post about artist jessica robles, who does really cute illustrations of shoes…we approached jessica and asked if she had any interest in drawing some free people shoes, and she was happy to!  check ‘em out, along with her description of why she picked each one…

wednes-diy

a friend of mine had one of these wine cork trivets in her apartment and i thought it was so cool! if you have a bunch of wine corks lying around it’s a perfect use for them, or if not you can always ask for some at a bar or wine store where they usually have a bunch lying around.

find a shallow tray like the ones shown above, and just arrange the corks in whatever pattern you like, using glue to fix them in place.

if you’re feeling really ambitious, take it a step further and make a wine cork…well…corkboard :)

i don’t drink much wine but i might have to get some corks and try this! that round one is awesome.

why prague?

as you now know, our january catalog was shot in prague…but why?

our team chose the location because it is bohemia. the term bohemian gets mentioned quite often in fashion, and it is definitely a huge influence on the free people aesthetic. but did you know that it refers to the untraditional lifestyle of writers, artists and musicians who came to europe by way of bohemia, the area now known as the czech republic? our team also liked the idea of going to prague because it is a fairytale city untouched by wars. not to mention, both the photographer (david mushegain, who also shot our december book) and our creative director both lived in prague at earlier points in their lives, so they are familiar with the city.
