I probably should have discovered The Head and the Heart last year when they first came out with their album, but it wasn’t until this year when they remastered a couple of the tracks, added some new ones, and re-released their self-titled album, that I discovered their music. It has become a staple album on my iPod with favorites like Sounds like Hallelujah, Lost in My Mind, Ghosts, and Down in the Valley (okay, that’s about half the album, but – honestly – I pretty much like the whole thing).
Made up of 5 dudes and 1 female, their lyrics address the passages of life with honest harmonies. They put feelings into words, and describe life’s events with an accuracy that gives you an “aha” moment of light and clarity. The instrumentals, heavy on the piano, drums, and violin – provide a calming base for most of the tracks with the exception of a few which make you want to tap your foot and nod your head along with rhythmic beat. They’re said to be an amazing band live. I’ll (hopefully) be able to find out for myself in September when they come to Philly (crossing my fingers I’ll still be here).
Their website is pretty informative, and you should definitely give it a look. Read the bio about how they came together, united by a vision, and dedicated to their creativity. They also have some great pictures posted in their photo section. Take a look at my favorites, and then listen for yourselves and see what you think. =)
“Oh God I love my vices but they’ve taken me to places
That I never thought I’d go” – Honey Come Home
“And my thoughts are diggin’ in the backyard
My roots have grown but I don’t know where they are”- Cats and Dogs
“Call it one drink too many
Call it pride of a man
But it don’t make no difference if you sit or you stand
‘Cause they both end in trouble and start with a grin” – Down in the Valley
“People say, ‘I knew you when you were six years old’
And you say, ‘But I’ve changed, I’ve changed, I’ve changed, I’ve changed.’” – Ghosts
