Beauty Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

I am not a winter person – and neither is my hair or skin. I feel like this time of year, my lips are always chapped, my skin is extra dry and my hair is a static mess. Here are some things that I’m trying out to help ease the winter blues, let me know if you have any tips that work as well, I’d love to hear!

Static Hair: rub a dime sized amount of Aloe Vera in your hands and run through your hair – not only will it tame static it is also full of nutrients that are good for your hair!

Dry Skin: When it’s freezing cold outside your instinct tells you to turn up the heat or take a steaming hot shower – but both of these things can dry out your skin immensely. To combat this, try using a humidifier in winter, which adds more moisture to the air. Also, try taking a bath instead, and add moisturizers like coconut oil or shea butter to the water. I’ve never tried this, but some people swear by adding milk and honey to the bath as well!

After bathing or showering, apply moisturizer immediately while skin is still damp to help lock in the moisture. While in summertime, light moisturizers are great to help prevent skin from getting to oily, in winter you don’t need to worry about that – you can use rich moisturizers with an oil base like avocado oil or almond oil that help create a protective layer for your face. In doing research for this post, I learned that avocado oil will not only add moisture, it can help reduce blemishes and sun damage and helps your skin produce more collagen! Chapped Lips: Sometimes repeatedly applying chapstick seems to make your lips even more chapped – try using a mixture of Vaseline and honey (the honey makes the Vaseline taste better, too) – it has done wonders for me :) Dab a little Vaseline on chapped knuckles as well!

Things you can eat or drink that help as well? Lots of water, fruit and green tea will help hydrate your skin and keep it clear. Also, green-based smoothies are great! Try our green smoothie recipe.

Hope these tips help you out, and again, if you have any of your own please share!

I am most certainly not a winter person either. I would much rather have all of the windows down in the car with music in the sunshine. These tips are great however! Avocado and aloe Vera are great for pretty much anything, and Vaseline is great also! Vaseline works great as a cheekbone highlighted and can be used as lipgloss. For a tinted lipgloss, mix in some loose eyeshadow powder like bare minerals. also if you put it on your eyelids, it gives them a little shine. It Looks as if you are wearing a light eyeshadow.

I really enjoyed this post:

Not only did you give practical advice like using a humidifier in the winter, but you gave great information on using natural products like honey, aloe, and avocado that is great for our bodies and hair. I believe that if we take care of nature, then nature will take care of us.

Thanks for the post… I like the idea a lot. Word to the wise though: Vaseline is petroleum-based, which means fossil based. Petroleum tricks your skin into thinking it doesn’t need to create its own oils. I recommend Shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil, etc. :)

Thanks fore the post! The best for static crazy hair, use dryer sheets, sounds weird but works wonders. Just rub on the top layer of your hair!

Thanks for the post. I also have really sensitive skin that dries up in the winter, so I use this olive oil sugar scrub that I found on Michelle Phan’s website. It’s easy to make and makes your skin incredibly soft :)

a great way to exfoliate your lips is some brown sugar with some honey!

Great post! I have the same problem and to battle dry skin i use a cream, brown sugar and sea salt scrub. Super easy to make, just buy whipping cream (the more fat the batter, for once hehe) and mix it with equal parts sea salt and brown sugar so it the consistency of a pudding. Than hop in a hot bath and scrub with the mixture, all over. It’s all natural, smells great, and leaves skin feeling velvety!
