DIY Luggage Tags

We’re talking a lot about travel this month with the drop of our March catalog, so I knew it was the perfect time for some DIY luggage tags – because the last thing you want to deal with when traveling is lost luggage. These luggage tags will not only help identify your suitcase or bag, they also look pretty cute :)

What you need: this project can be done a number of ways – you can use old fabric scraps, or leather – I used scraps of leather – a sturdy needle and thread, and some acrylic paint.

First, cut your pieces of leather to whatever size you want. In one of the pieces of leather, cut a small slit towards the top – you can do this by folding it in half, and just making a small cut with your scissors.

On the piece where you cut the slit, cut along the two longer sides of the leather, so that you have a flap as seen above, that is still connected on one end.

Put the pieces of leather together, and I recommend poking holes before you start sewing (trust me, it’s easier that way!). I used a strong needle to poke the holes through both layers of leather. Then I simply stitched them together – I used brown thread in a similar color to the leather. Do not stitch all the way around – leave one end open so you can slide your identification card in.

Inspired by this project, I wanted to jazz up my luggage tag a little bit using acrylic paint in some fun bright colors. I love how the teal looks on the brown leather :)

The last step is to cut a small slit through the flap, insert card, and back of the luggage tag:

I strung a piece of leather rope through the slit, and used that to attach the luggage tag to my bag!

Now I’m all set for vacation :) Bag pictured above is the sun bleached leather trim tote.

The best part about this is that you’ll absolutely be able to figure out which bag is yours on the luggage carousel!

I like this a lot! Though, how would you attach it to the bag so that it doesn’t fall off? How would you knot it?
