We have a pretty amazing event going on this Friday at our Austin store! Free People and Rickenbacker have teamed up to create a series of 5 one-of-a-kind guitars as part of a traveling exhibition taking place at Free People stores in Austin, Nashville, and culminating at the brand new Rockefeller Center store! Each Rickenbacker guitar is a one-of-a-kind piece designed by a Free People artist. One of them, the “Keep on the Sunny Side” guitar, will travel with video producers, Yours Truly, to pick up autographs from some of our favorite musicians. From March 15- April 3, they will be available for auction while touring the country in support of Music for a Cure.

This Friday, see the guitars in person at the event at our store on Lamar in downtown Austin! From 1pm – 6pm, stop in and enjoy local Austin treats and enjoy some live music, including a set by Ava Luna at 1pm! Read on for an interview with the band, and check them out on bandcamp here.

Where were you when you wrote your first song, and what was it about?

I was in my study sitting at the piano. The song was about the tragedy of being human.

If your music was a place, where would it be?

Arches National Park.

Where do you draw inspiration for your music?

Philly, Myst, Labi Siffre, Hunter Giles.

If you could collaborate with any other musician, dead or alive, who would it be?

Penderecki

What sort of music do you listen to? What’s on your ipod right now?

We’re listening to Fiona Apple right now. We listened to D’Angelo, Tortoise and Wesley Willis yesterday.

Describe the time leading up to a show – do you have any pre-show rituals?

Usually we spend our preshow time trying to locate all band members so that we can play.

How would you describe your personal style?

We dress like the cast of Seinfeld. Sometimes we wear radical pajamas.

Do you guys have any other fun plans for while you’re in Austin for SXSW?

Singer/keyboardist Felicia Douglass is playing a solo set at the Cherrywood Coffeehouse at 6pm on Saturday. Other than that, we’re going to eat a whole lot of tasty food.

Tell me something most people don’t know about Ava Luna.

Well I guess most people don’t know we’re a band at all still–but those who do probably don’t know that we all met in a foster home as foster children…

What’s next for you guys? What are you currently working on/excited about?

We’re finishing up almost two months of touring and then we’re going to go home and write some new music. We’re excited to tour a lot more later this year too.
