Snapshot: Holly Cromer, Virginia

Where do you live?
Blacksburg, Virginia or as most people know it Virginia Tech.

What kind of camera do you shoot with?
I have a Canon 7D that I use for digital photos and a Canon Elan IIe that I use for film.  Every once in a while I use my Holga 135.

What is your favorite subject to shoot?
Portraits.  I’d like to start working with more models on personal projects or even lookbooks for fashion students, but my town is small and models can be hard to come by.

Where do you draw inspiration for your work?
When I browse around the internet, I keep a little notebook by my side.  If I see a photo that I madly love, I study it closely and see what it is exactly that I love, then I write that down so when I go to actually take photos I don’t feel like I’m directly copying someone else’s work.  I used to dissect magazines the same way, but it was more expensive and harder to organize than browsing blogs and now of course Pinterest allows me to hoard all of my favorite images and inspiration.

If you could travel in time to photograph any place and era, when and where would you choose?
I’ve always had a fascination with the 1960’s…  I’d love to go back to Woodstock and live by the beach in California.

Tell me a random fact about yourself.
I love to be in water, but I can’t open my eyes underwater and I have to hold my nose when I jump in.
